Editorial review from Citysearch 6/9/2015

re visit on sunday june 7 2015\r my mom is 101- she loves oysters - about\r 2 months ago i called early in the day- spoke to Kurt (one of the owners i think).\r he was very helpful and said it would be no problem to get oysters as take out but to call later in the day when the staff would be there. ok- no problem and it worked out well. on sunday june 7 i called about 330pm and asked for 1/2 dozen oysters as take out and if only a tiny bit of horseradish was put into the cocktail sauce. i went to pick up the order and the young lady/greeter/cashier told me that oysters are really not done as take out and the person taking my order was not aware of that. they would honor the order but never again- just so i would know! i mentioned that i had done this before and she firmly told me that it will NEVER be done again. fine- no tip for you! i received the order for my mom. when she\r was ready to have the oysters at home the cocktail sauce was chock full of horseradish and there was an additional cup of the horseradish. i speak clearly, i speak english, and the girl taking the order seemed to speak fluent english also.\r they can take keep their horseradish because i WILL NEVER EVER GO BACK TO DINE THERE nor will i order any type of takeout. the paper menu indicates ""catering and take-out"" and oysters are listed. their customer service is the pits\r and that is even an insult to the pits. more

A Chance 8/15/2009

Simply put, First and Last Tavern and either be the greatest establishment that you had ever set foot in in the obscure areas of upper Connecticut, or it can be a place which is loud, smelly, and possesses disgusting food. While one time i had a delicious pizza, and the next time i went, my whole family each had hairs in their food. on the bright side they did offer us free food in return. if this hasn't made you vomit in a baggie yet, than also know you have to come here multiple times before coming to a final verdict. I wish you good luck (you'll need it) more

NOT ""the best in town"" 7/31/2009

Calling First & Last (Avon location) the ""best in town"" is going a bit far, either that or the people saying that don't venture out much. My good friend and i took her sister out to celebrate news that she is expecting, unfortunately this is the place her sister chose. I ate here once before and was disappointed and now again with this recent visit. The food was just bland. When my friend returned her dinner, it came back no better...the waitress seem hurried to give us our check, didnt offer us dessert...not that we wouldve stayed for it but still. And yes, i agree with someone else's post saying the place was ""poorly lit""...we had little lanterns on the table...they are pointless if you have to break out your lighter to read the menu, we overheard the couple in back of us saying the same thing about the lighting. Its one thing to maintain a soft lighting during the evening, its another when its too soft to read the menu clearly!! Anyway, this is NOT the ""best in town""...take my word for it please. Pros: The building itself is nice. Cons: bland food & uncomfortable atmosphere more

Save Yourself the Trip... 6/7/2009

Our family visited the Avon location twice, both times were disappointing. The HARTFORD location is way better (even though its parking lot is small) still better bet than Avon. Even though they are going for a rustic feeling, its still too dim inside, its blah. The kitchen is open, not always a good idea when you have cooks in the back yelling at the waitresses (we saw this both times). The focaccia bread they serve & known for, again both times..was rock hard. Our first visit my dad sent back his fried calamari , said it was tasteless & salty. Second visit we asked for our soups to be taken off the bill (were not good), they were removed from our bill but no manager came to apologize and even offer a free dessert..the waitress did apologize. Needless to say we will NOT make a 3trd visit to this location...save yourself the trip , what may look good from the outside isn't always the same inside, go to Hartford location or a different restaraunt!! Pros: outside looks nice, spacious inside Cons: food & atmosphere more

This is a great, great place to eat and have a good time. 9/30/2008

We had our rehearsal dinner here on 9/26/08 and it could not have been better. The service was top notch - attentive staff worked hard to see that all our needs were met. Hillary, you are the best! The food was also wonderful - prepared with attention to flavor and it was abundant. I can't say enough about how delighted we were. We were a group of 40 people and there was plenty of food - all hot and served at the same time. The bruchetta and stuffed eggplant were especially yummy. Don't miss a chance to dine at this cozy restaurant, where service and taste reign. more

The one in Hartford is MUCH better... 9/11/2008

My family went to the one in Avon for a family Christmas Brunch. This is something that we do every year to get the family together at least once a year. (We choose different places every year) Pros: Beautiful surroundings and scenery. Large area Cons: Short on wait staff, poor service, food was cold more

Great Pizza 3/10/2008

This restaurant is a staple in the Avon area and some of the best pizza and Italian dishes around. I've been there for lunch several times. It's probably not the best place to go if you are in a hurry. The place is always packed and it's not that easy to get in and out in an hour. The staff is always pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu items. more

Great pizza 2/25/2008

One of our family favorites. We love the pizza. The atmosphere is family friendly. The food is excellent. Try a dessert. You won't be disappointed. We really think this restaurant is tops. Give it a try. more

Amazing Pizza 2/2/2008

The First and Last Tavern is a great little place in Avon. If you're looking for fantastic pizza, this old building is the place to go. It can, however, be hectic getting in and out of the parking lot due to it's location. more

First and Last Tavern of Avon, CT 11/11/2007

This is the best restaurant in the area! The pizza is great and so is the veal parm. Little bit pricey but well worth the trip to Avon, CT. I buy the sauce at The Big Y. The best to home made that you can get. more

Good Food and Ambiance - not just a pizza place 1/9/2007

There is more to this place than pizza. They have traditional italian food like lasagna which is very good. If you like a little spice, they make a nice chicken dish with pepperoncini. Pros: large restaurant, nice ambiance, large menu variey more

Mini chain, but good pizza 11/18/2006

This is the 3rd of what I believe is 3 restaurants with the same ownership. Of the 3, this is the nicest having renovated an older colonial building on Avon's main drag. Though this restaurant is a long distance from our house I had recently acquired a gift certificate at a discount and it was a nice fall evening for a drive. We were seated in the back in a wooden booth and quickly ordered our Margherita pizza. This pizza is exactly the same as we have ordered at their Hartford, original, and Middletown locations so we were not surprised by the wonderful fresh toppings of tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. Pros: Very good margherita pizza more
