Firehouse Grille

I have been to this restaurant many times and I am always impressed with the service and the quality of food. The staff is knowledgeable and extremely attentive and friendly, the food is fresh and tastes superb (I recommend the cashew encrusted halibut with the shrimp and grits) and the wine list is great. To top it off they have different happy hour specials everyday of the week, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Great menu and staff more

My husband and I have visited this restaurant several times and have introduced many friends to this restaurant because we were originally impressed with the food, service, etc. However, I will not go back after this past weekend nor will I suggest this restaurant to anyone ever again. We arrived around 8pm on Saturday evening when they were scheduled to close at 10pm (I called to verify before making the drive). The hostess informed us that they were no longer serving for the night and suggested we go elsewhere for dinner! When I asked for a manager, after a very long time, the bartender came to help us. He said he would ask the KITCHEN staff if they could serve us. They finally came to the conclusion that they could serve us, but we could not have any of the empty tables in the restaurant; we were only offered the bar and were told that we would have to wait over an hour!! The restaurant was NOT full and there was plenty of time before closing! I will not visit this restaurant again and definitely do not recommend it because of this poor customer service. My wife and I absolutely loved Firehouse when we first visited last year. The menu was very thoughtful, with marvelous creative and well-executed entrees like Venison and scallops that you could not find anywhere else in the area. We were sorry to hear they closed for renovations, but were excited to dine there earlier this week now that they had reopened and unfortunately very disappointed. On the positive side, the renovation included some updates to the front of the place including a more visible sign, so it's easier to find. The interior remains unchanged and the wine list was still OK for the area and reasonably priced. The positive changes were not extended to the menu however. The eclectic cuisine was replaced with generic steak and seafood type-fare. Whereas at least 50% of the menu used to be items that you would not find elsewhere, now it was just like any other steak/seafood place. Our entrees were OK, and there did not seem to be the care in preparation or flavors that made this place one of our favorites in the past. To top it all off, I got quite sick the next day. Sadly, I don't think we'll be back which is a real shame since this was our hands-down favorite in the area. If you want something a little different, I'd head up the road a bit to the Passion8 bistro, which seems to have picked up where the old firehouse left off. A little hard to find but well worth it once you do. My neighbor told me about Firehouse and we have become regulars. The outside is a little rough but the inside is gorgeous. My wife loves dining by the fireplace on cold winter evenings. The steak & cake (crab cake) is out of this world ,as is the crispy Flounder. On our last visit my wife mentioned her steak was slightly overcooked but was ok. They immediately brought another one, which was perfect. Firehouse is head and shoulders above most charlotte steak houses in the variaty of great food they serve... I have eaten at the Firehouse several times now and it is my absolute favorite restaurant in the southeast. The food is untouchable, the occasional live music is wonderful and the ambience is as romantic as one could ask for. The wine list was extensive, but overpriced. My fiance's prime rib was tough--he had difficulty cutting it even with a steak knife. My scallops were so tough that they were difficult to chew, and eventually I gave up and stopped eating--My jaw was tired after two scallops. For a meal that cost nearly $100 (no appetizers, no dessert) I expect a restaurant to prepare food well. My expectations were far from met. Unfortunately, though the service was impeccable, the atmosphere pleasant, the food was just plain bad. I have had better food much cheaper all over Charlotte. I will never go back, and you shouldn't either. more
