Don't bother with these guys. I had problems with my oil furnace shutting down at random times. I asked them to perform the routine maintenance and troubleshoot to find the problem. The technician, Dave, came out for the initial visit. He charged me $150 for that visit and proceeded to tell me that I needed a new oil pump. I had no heat for 3 days before George came by to install a new pump for an additional $400. Its a good thing I have a wood stove for back up heat.\r The furnace ran ok for about two weeks before it started shutting down again. When I called them about this, they didn't seem to want to come out and take care of the problem. They just wanted to tell me over the telephone how to troubleshoot my furnace. I paid them to fix this because I don't like crawling around under my house! And while I was under my house trying to describe to Dave what I was seeing, he wasn't listening to a word I said. He was telling me to do stupid things that I knew weren't the problem. I am a mechanical engineer. I can figure these things out when I need to.\r I decided I was done with Fire & Ice, and called Honke Heating in Gresham Oregon. The Honke technician came out, and in a matter of minutes found the problems. He pointed out all of the things that Dave and George should have done, but didn't do, before selling me a $400 fuel pump! It turns out that a $10 part could have fixed my problem.\r Looking back on it, I believe I paid $150 for Dave to install a new fuel filter on that initial visit. I know he did that because he left the old on laying under my house. But there is no evidence he did anything more. Honke did the remaining maintenance and charged me a lot less money than that fuel filter cost me.\r Fire & Ice is not trustworthy! Do not do business with them! more

AVOID FIRE & ICE HEATING & A/C AND THE OWNER, GEORGE LANDEN LIKE THE PLAGUE!! The owner of Fire & Ice Heating & A/C, previously under the business name of Fire & Ice Heating & Cooling, had an employee install a brand new, $6300, Ruud high efficiency heat pump (which consists of a furnace and A/C unit) in 2006. It was installed so horrifically that now in 2013, the whole unit is destroyed. In addition, it created a terrible mold problem which will cost me over $1800 to remediate. Mr. George Landen, the owner, refuses to take any responsibility for his work and at the VERY LEAST, replace the furnace (I was willing to settle for a new furnace ONLY to avoid court). He told the Better Business Bureau that because the company is no longer in business under that name, he not responsible. He did not deny it was his employee's fault, and he did not try to fix the problem. He just said, that business no longer exists. Does this sound like a good company to do business with? He believes the miniscule name change in 2009 takes away any liability on his part. Again, does this sound like a good company to do business with?\r \r When my A/C died this summer, I had it fixed and it cost $2800. Then my furnace died. That was enough, I had it. I called Mr, Landen and he sent out his own assessor, Dave, to review the situation. My new furnace guy was also with us. At the end of the ""review"" Dave, said ""he would stand with me in court and state the heat pump was installed incorrectly."" Today, Mr. Landen met with my heating and cooling man and me, at my home. My new contractor tried to get George Landen to do the right thing, avoid court, and replace my furnace. Landen hemmed and hawed and kept asking me if I had ""any papers"" of his visit in 2009 (after the name change). He obviously was just fishing to see what evidence I had on him. I threw him out of my house. \r \r No matter what his business name was, he continued to work under his old business name after 2009, when he changed it to Fire & Ice Heating & A/C, as shown on Angies' List. My new contractor, who tried to broker a solution with Landen, and is highly rated on Angies List, said he has never seen such grotesque work in his years as a heating and cooling expert. The matter is now in the hands of my attorney. Even if I get nothing at all back from him, I want to be sure NO ONE HAS THE SAME EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD WITH THIS COMPANY.\r \r If Fire & Ice did any work for you, HAVE IT EXAMINED RIGHT NOW. Review the company at the Better Business Bureau and other internet sites, and stay away. more

Watch out... 1/30/2011

In brief-- quick service, but dishonest. I believe he charged on a 'sliding scale' based on my perceived ability to pay, took advantage of the fact that I appeared to be single and female, and that I was suffering from laryngitis, so could not adequately discuss/protest.' Having owned my home for several years and had significant work done on it, I have never written a negative review for a contractor. In this case, it would be remiss of me not to. The details... Our heater gave out one morning, and I had my husband contact George while I waited at home for the repairman. I agreed to the $79 diagnostic fee, and he did come within a couple of hours as requested. He was able to diagnose a faulty capacitor within a few minutes, told me that it was my lucky day that it wasn't my heater, and immediately had me sign the invoice, agreeing to pay $150 for the part and installation. I was suffering from laryngitis at the time, so couldn't inquire as to why it was so expensive when he pulled the small part out of his van and quickly installed it. In all, it took less than half an hour. After my husband got home, we looked into the cost of capacitors for my particular furnace unit, and it appeared that it retailed easily under $20. Paying $150 for the part + labor seemed rather excessive, so I contacted George about it. We exchanged several emails, in which he was rather insulting and belittling. He strongly implied that there was a surcharge for having such quick service (if I had been told that upfront, I would have declined his services and waited a few more hours for another company). ""Tell your husband I saved his dear sweet wife from a case of walking pnuemonia."" He kept pressing us to give him what we thought was a fair price. He finally revealed that there is a $65 'standard charge' to get a part, even if it was pulled out of his van (the fact that my capacitor was in stock reveals how common a failure point it is). I was a bit dumbfounded by his last email to me. ""It's in your nature to haggle for a price, and you don't feel good about a sale unless you get some kind of discount or price reduction. Read the last sentence as: you don't feel good about a transaction unless you're gouging the service provider."" And then he suggested that we meet somewhere to discuss further. I don't feel great about writing a negative review on someone trying to make a living, but at the same time, I wish I had read such a review before we contacted him. Instead, I was taken in by all the positive reviews. This was altogether an awful experience. Btw, I was unable to post this review on ServiceMagic. Not only do they limit reviews to an unreasonably short character length, they filter out reviews that they find 'offensive,' hence severely misrepresenting the quality of their contractors. Never again, ServiceMagic. more
