If you're up in the area, give this a try. The menu has many many items on it, and I think that can make one feel overwhelmed. I also think that it causes the restaurant to lose ...

Visit this place on Friday or Saturday 4/11/2011

They were not mistaken when they said this place was excellent. We ordered Flautas which came with beans, rice, avocado, and 2 torillas. The food was nice and hot when it was served. The margarita she ordered was smaller than normal, but it made up for the amount of Tequila it had in it. Visit this place on Friday or Saturday evenings when the band comes alive more

The food was delicious 4/7/2011

My husband and I went to El Jarro to celebrate one of my milestone bdays with 12 of my close friends. The wait was over an hour long but well worth it. (The drinks helped with the wait.) The food was delicious and service was superb. It is definitely one of our favorite spots. more

Enchiladas 4/7/2011

Enchiladas were cheesy and the sauce was rich in flavor. more

Good food 2/11/2011

The food is really pretty good. I ate here recently with a large group of some of my favorite family members and we all shared and sampled each other's orders. It's different from your typical greasy Tex-Mex but I sort of like that it's a bit more fresh and possibly slightly healthier than average. Possibly. I can agree that it's possibly a bit overpriced for what you get. But, the cost isn't extreme either more

service is always good 2/3/2011

food is unbeatable 1/12/2011

No matter how many Mexican places San Antonio can pump out, El Jarro will always be the best. The staff is friendly, and treats their regulars very well, the band is always made up of great entertainers, the people that frequent the place are definitely interesting to observe, and the tortilla hut is always producing fresh tortillas. And on top of all that fun, the food is unbeatable. No matter what you get, everything from the chips and salsa to dessert is something to remember. I haven't lived in San Antonio for years, and this is still the place I come back to every time I visit, even if it doesn't fit in the schedule. more

Friendly atmostphere 1/3/2011

El Jarro has some of the best Mexican food in town! They are a family-owned business and have been around for 55 years, now that should tell you something! I absolutely love their fresh table salsa, fresh tortillas, lunch buffet and warm & friendly atmosphere. I'm a fan! more

So good 11/19/2010

I have been going to El Jarro since 1975 and have been to other local Mexican restaurants that have come and gone since then, but El Jarro remains the top one. Sandy and Arthur do their best to make it the best!! Their staff have for the most part, been with them for many, many years - something uncommon the restaurant business. You can always count on an excellant meal there. more

been around for a long time 10/27/2010

good time at el jarro 10/6/2010

Simply the Best of San Antonio: El Jarro De Arturo is not the a typical enchilada's and taco fair that most restraunts have. Even though they do have it on their menu. What set's them apart are the fresh selections of daily specialites. The last visit I had we had a choice of a tenderloin with galic and rosemary infused potatos and a salmon filet with a mango salsa on a bed of asparagas and artichokes. We also order a side of Guacomole which was the best I have had in San Antonio and at $4.75 for a full plate of Guacomole it is totally worth it. The flavors melded very nicely and had a nice hint of cilantro but was not over powering like other restraunts which was nice for a change. As for our meals they looked like pictures from a nice magazine as they came each delicately crafted with a sprig of fresh rosmary placed gingerly on each. So it alittle while for use to finally get into our meals but once we did the savory flavors and the delicate nuiasances came out. My steak was not only fresh and cooked to perfection (Medium Rare) it had a lovely hint of cilantro and basil which was a little shocking. My parteners meal was vivacious fruity and ever so tasty. It was truelly the hit of the party. So if you go to El Jarro De Arturo you can stick with the basic menu fair. But if you are feeling alittle adventerous and fun try the specials on the day. It will be worth the price. If you are wondering about service. The wait staff is very clingy and make you feel abit stuffed and cramped which is also part of the restraunts home feeling. So go enjoy yourself a drink a nice nite and a good time at El Jarro De Arturo. more

Great food 9/7/2010

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Typically there is a great band on Friday nights. I usually order the enchiladas suizas and a top shelf margaritas. more

was not disappointed 8/26/2010

I came there looking for jazz but was not disappointed with the meal or the music which was latin. I suggest though that instead of phones give us the choice to text and find out which band is playing. I'd like to hear that lady sing. more

Delish 8/13/2010

On our most recent visit, I had the chicken mole and it was delish! My husband had a pork dish and that was good too. We ate on the patio since the weather was nice. The decor needs to be spiffed up, it's getting run down both inside and outside, but the food is quite good. This could be a more desirable dining destination if they spruced up the place. The patio has lots of potential, especially since it has a fireplace. more

Owner Message
  • El Jarro de Arturo restaurant, since 1975, takes pride in preparing its dishes with only the finest and freshest ingredients available, including low cholesterol canola and olive oils for your enjoyment and health. Because of this added care, our family-owned restaurant has been recognized in Bon Appetit Magazine and Who's Who in America's Best Restaurants.

Arthur and Sandy Cerna welcome you to El Jarro, which means "the jug," as in a jug full of delicious fresh-squeezed lime juice margaritas or maybe Beans ala Charra or a jug full of joy when you experience our establishment.

Editorial
  • In Short
The large, frescoed interior seems to stretch on forever, but in spite of its size, El Jarro fills up. Lunchtime diners and an upscale after-work crowd come for the best Mexican food on this side of town, including enchiladas and a notable chili and corn soup. Festive and noisy in the evenings, it's a good place for socializing in groups and the well-stocked bar can keep things going long after the beans and rice are gone.
