Best

If you're up in the area, give this a try. The menu has many many items on it, and I think that can make one feel overwhelmed. I also think that it causes the restaurant to lose ...

GREAT Mexican restaurant 6/6/2011

El jarro is a GREAT Mexican restaurant on the North side of town. It is not the fanciest looking restaurant, but has an enjoyable atmosphere nonetheless. It is a great romantic date restaurant! The patio is lovely, and everything I've tried has been excellent. The service is pretty decent, and the prices are decent. Great food and great atmosphere. A very enjoyable dinner experience! more

Memories 6/3/2011

El Jarro holds a place in my heart from the days of the 24th Street store. That was where I could be found on Sunday mornings for years, just before going up to Jefferson High School to play football on the front lawn. This store is excellent. Good food, drinks, atmosphere, and, often, entertainment. more

Delicioso!!! 6/1/2011

Dinner on a Sat night w another couple. Wife had a chile rellano that she said was good but not great. I had a Salmon special w a light cream sauce. Came w asparagus and a fantastic salad. It was the envy of all my dinner-mates. Delicioso!!! Service was good when we first got there but by the time we ready to leave was very busy. more

I love this place 5/27/2011

I love this place. It's right around the corner from my house and gets me out of pinches when I don't have time to cook. more

perfect 5/26/2011

First and foremost, the atmosphere, ambiance, and their margaritas are nothing short of perfect. Live music playing R&B from the 1960's and 1970's usually dominates the scene on Friday and Saturday nights more

Really excellent! 5/24/2011

So if you are looking for really cheap this is not it. But cloth napkins, tableclothes, and really excellent food and service. Throughly enjoyed a late afternoon lunch. more

Hands down the best!!! 5/23/2011

Hands down best salsa in San Antonio! I absolutely love their rice, charro beans, nachos, flautas, fajita tacos, basically everything! Their enchiladas were greasy one time...but usually they are perfect! They also have the ultimate margarita here....believe it's called the Arturo. Puro patron and a splash of lime. The best!!! (So strong my sister took a picture with the bus boy b/c she thought he was our waiter.) I miss you El Jarro! more

I could live on it! 5/19/2011

I'm from the southeast, so great Mexican food is few and far between for me. But let me tell you El Jarro is a place I could have eaten until I died from over indulgence. Simply amazing food. Tortillas are made fresh, by hand, right inside the restaurant. Everything I had was fantastic. It was so good I can't remember if I had anticuchos (and made my own tacos on the fresh tortillas) or if I had the fajitas [pretty close to the same thing] ... but the food was amazing. I considered moving to San Antonio so that I could eat at El Jarro regularly. more

El Jarro is perfect! 5/17/2011

El Jarro is my favorite Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant in San Antonio, and one of my all-time favorites anywhere: I can honestly state that I have never had a bad meal here.Though in a strip center, the decor is quite attractive; service is generally very good; food is excellent. The lunch buffet is a really good deal - and the regular menu prices are very fair, I think, for what you get. My only complaints - and they are very mild ones - are parking (a nightmare when the restaurant is busy)....and sometimes the cheese enchiladas are bland, due to an insufficiency of onion. Otherwise, El Jarro is perfect! more

Very good 5/16/2011

I really thought the food was very good. The yuca with mojito, the black beans and pork were excellent. I would have preferred if the plantain used for the platano loco have been more crunchy (greener). The tres leches was also a little dry. The food is definitely authentic Cuban food. more

Flavorful and fresh! 5/12/2011

love the shrimp and steak special. Their cabrito is also flavorful and well portioned. Their salsa is fresh and has that tartness from lime juice i love. (not like the Condensed Tomato Soup salsa that is everywhere in S.A.) Light/thin chips are served as a starter. Again, much better than many heavy, thick waffle type tortilla chips that are common here. Their Flash fried spinach is wonderful. Fresh home made tortillas and quality pescado. There is a good variety on the menu and there are several dishes that display a true "Mexico" mexican flavor, as opposed to a Tex-mex flavor. Their Arturo's Margarita is my favorite. it's very strong both in heat and lime tartness- not sweet at all. more

Very good 5/11/2011

Just ate here yesterday. The food was very good. I ordered the "Special Salad" I think it's called. It has blue cheese, artichoke hearts, and peppers on it. It is the best salad I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The general manager waited on us (not sure why) but between him and the woman who kept our drinks full, the service was excellent. I'll definitely be back! more

Absolutely the best 5/9/2011

Absolutely the best mexcican food I have ever tasted. The place was so pretty and welll thought out! Been to mexican restaurants in NYC and Vegas....but this one tops them all! Definetly worth a drive from the riverwalk!!!! more

Yummy 5/6/2011

Mexican food here is delicious. I'd recommend it. more

Amazing 5/4/2011

REALLY good beans. more

Awesome! 5/2/2011

This is the best restaurant in town. We go at least once a week. There is live music on some evenings. The anticuchos are amazing! The salsa is as good as it gets. Almost everything on the menu is perfect. Beware of the margaritas on the rocks. They are awesome, but extremely potent. more

Buzz Buzz Buzz 4/21/2011

Average Food, but we go for the drinks. More than 2 Margs and you should give your car keys to someone else. Buzz Buzz Buzz because they are delicious and made with everclear! Enjoy....plan to call a cab! more

THis place always bring out of town guests 4/19/2011

"El Jarro offers surprising delicious food, gracious wait staff and killer margaritas making El Jarro our go-to restaurant in San Antonio. Owners Sandy and Arthur Cerna provide a pleasant and dependable dining experience, evidenced by the number of regulars you see each time you go. We love the outdoor cafe when the weather is right, a live band and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights and the Sunday buffet. Chicken marsala, Grilled shrimp with pasta and Tenderloin Chipotle are my favorite dishes. I occasionally save room for the unusual flan dessert - very dense and not too sweet, but memorable. This is the place I always bring my out of town guest who want to experience San Antonio Mexican food. " more

There was a great 70's 5 piece cover band 4/15/2011

We were brought here by friends on a busy Friday night. You get a margarita, some chips and wait your turn, but it's worth it. The food is authentic, fresh and tasty. The drinks are well mixed and strong. And...there was a great 70's 5 piece cover band (Second Nature) playing live after 9pm and the customers were dancing their hearts out. A very friendly lively scene...on a Friday night, be patient! more

Editorial
  • In Short
The large, frescoed interior seems to stretch on forever, but in spite of its size, El Jarro fills up. Lunchtime diners and an upscale after-work crowd come for the best Mexican food on this side of town, including enchiladas and a notable chili and corn soup. Festive and noisy in the evenings, it's a good place for socializing in groups and the well-stocked bar can keep things going long after the beans and rice are gone.
