Lions, Tigers and Spiders Oh My! 9/11/2010

I wish I had read some of these reviews before I WASTED my time ging into this house of ill-review! I went in there this week with some items to sell and was treated like a 2nd class citizen...like a subhuman! The staff was demeaning and condescending and I will NEVER, I repeat NEVER grace this dump with my presence again. There are far too many other places to go. Oh and folks...make sure you don't have ANY spider web remnants on any of your items or they'll publicly humiliate you in front of the store. See...they don't ""do spiders"". Had I known there was a small dead spider in my bag I would have asked for more money! The older lady up front is very rude and the tall guy with the beard is arrogant without a reason to be. Folks...PLEASE don't waste your time here...apparently they have far TOO many customers to care about whether you're there or not! more

Mixed feelings, but won't be going back. 1/22/2009

I have been going to this book store for about four years. I would say it is one of my favorite places to go in Raleigh. The staff is a mixed bunch, most of the girls are pretty nice and accommodating. The fellows are young and a little unprofessional, but the atmosphere has always been pleasant. However, a few Saturdays back, the older lady that works there made a horribly rude comment to my grand kids and offended me beyond repair. Citysearch will not let me post the exact comment from her, because even the site flags the words. I have understood, from others, that she suffers from chronic emphysema, but my word and such language! She walks around like a Grinch, hunched and angry. If you don't like kids and animals, don't invite them in the store. She muttered to me, something awful when I suggested she apologize. I am so upset about the situation and there seems to be no resolve, as she is apparently among the top ranking officials of the place. If there were ever anyway for the store to inform customers of her departure, I am sure it would bring many more delicate older and younger customers back to the place of business. As of this moment, I am so angry, I will never step foot back into the establishment. There is a need for change.\r Otherwise, good job on the new store! Sorry I can not patronize it any further. Pros: Very informed, intelligent staff. Lots of parking. Good hours. Cons: The older lady, bathrooms tend to have problems, strange music. more

VERY HELPFUL & friendly staff. GREAT deals. 12/15/2008

Looking for something different? Im a regular at Edward Mckay and it is one of my favorite bookstores ever. HUGE and well organized. Not really sure what the person below me is talking about, the staff is very talkative and friendly w/me & knowledgeable! They always know exactly what Im looking for and walk me right to it. NEVER had a negative experience with them. This is NOT just a bookstore, they've got evvvverything, CDS, AUDIOBOOKS, VINYL, DVDS, TURNTABLES..ETC ETC ETC. They even have free classes and music shows if you catch them on the right day. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, ive yet to find a used store that can beat their prices. They've got my complete loyalty, I would recommend them very highly. Pros: helpful staff, great deals, cool layout, great vibe Cons: not open 24 hours a day? more

Rude but there are a lot of books 10/23/2008

Rude, rude, rude. Did I mention they were rude? If you want to browse and have nothing particular in mind, you will most definitely find something you like here as there are mountains of books to choose from. You may want to avoid this store if you are looking for something particular or want to be treated respectfully. more

Great place to buy/sell books/music! 11/3/2007

My first time, I had a great experience from the time I walked in the door. Friendly and smart staff, they know their business. Huge selection. They didn't buy everything we dragged in there - and they have their set of standards and rules, but a great time and I would definitely go back. I bought a few hard-to-find books while I was there too. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! more

It is what it is. great place to purchase used books. 2/16/2007

Very helpful staff. If you wait your turn you will be rewarded. Great prices on used books, dvds, and audio books. Good resale options. Great trade value on return books. Best place in town to get good children's books at a reasonable price. more

This place has really gone downhill...spend your money at Borders or Amazon instead 12/3/2006

This place has been going downhill for a while and my last visit completely turned me off. It's an eclectic used bookstore with an enormous selection of books and other media. Used to be you could always strike up a good conversation over a book you were exchanging or ask for recommendations based on an author you liked. The last few times I noticed that the attitude of the staff has changed. Last week, I stopped by to trade in about 20 books, half of them hardbacks. I knew that the queue would be pretty long (and it was) so my wife and I had planned to leave the books there, have some lunch, and come back in an hour. NOPE!! The snotty guy behind the counter informed me that I had to stay in the store while they determined the trade in value of the books. (Typically, you get more trade in value than you do straight cash.) I asked how long it would take before he could get to mine and he said probably an hour. Normally, I love to hang out and peruse the shelves for a few hours, but I came across town to get the credit and planned to come back some other time. I was irritated and said, ""Fine, I'll just donate them."" (They have a donation shelf by the door where you can put books they don't want to buy but where someone else can pick them up for free.) As soon as I said that the manager said, ""He's donating them? Okay, go ahead and process his books now."" Now that's rude! You suddenly have time for my books when you're getting them for free? Well, I picked up my hardbacks to take them back and she had the audacity to say ""You're not donating those?"" These were mainstream authors like King's Dark Tower series. She knew they could sell them quickly. I used to be a frequent customer, now you couldn't pay me to set foot in there again. If you're reading this I hope you won't either. Pros: Lots of used books Cons: Long waits to trade in books, RUDE staff, inconvenient policies more
