Best

always courteous servers, staff and ambiance!

Worst

I'll only talk about the lounge upstairs, since I don't bother eating at the restaurant any longer (too pretentious and not that good). I liked the lounge uptairs in the past and...

Fantastic food, bad service 4/25/2008

I have been to Benjy's a few times, and have ALWAYS had very good food there. Usually, the service is also very good. Last night, however, that was not the case. We had a waiter who was so rude that we were about to leave. He seemed to have such a problem either with his job or with us, that it actually made the meal somewhat uncomfortable. We tried to make excuses for him, thinking that maybe he is just having an ""off day,"" or maybe his girlfriend just dumped him or something! But in the end, it made for a less than enjoyable experience. Everyone else there was great - manager, bartender, etc. I will still go back because of the good food. Pros: Great food, never had anything bad there Cons: Rude waiter made for an uncomfortable experience more

An experience worth having. 4/4/2008

We just moved to the Houston area and it was a joy to find this place so soon. We came in for lunch, not very busy. The lighting and decor of the restaurant was very inviting. I ordered a pomeganite cherry sparkling soda that was delicious. We were served a flat indian bread (poppers) that was tasty and didnt leave us full. The service was wonderful. The manager came over and talked to us. We asked him about the menu and he went into it with pride and confidence. It was hard to choose after such a great description. My husband and I love to eat and try new things so the originality of the menu was wonderful. There were so many different flavors. We ordered the tomato salad to start. It was nice and light, and got us very excited for the next course. I ordered the chicken sandwhich with brie, bacon and arugula.....you got to be kidding me, it was just a chicken sandwhich but it was out of this world!! It came with a side of veggies, squash and zucchini. I loved that they werent covered in sauce or tons of spices, just a hint of seasoning on the thick cut veggies was a great compliment. My husband got a steak rap with fries. The fries were a medium cut, seasoned with sea salt which made them extra yummy! We ended with chocolate cake with berries and mint. I was so full, but I couldnt put my spoon down! It was rich and sweet yet tart and fresh. Ridiculous!! It was such a satisfying experience, my husband and I went home and made love! We will be coming back to this place again and again. more

Great Brunch Spot 12/26/2007

I came here with 3 of my girlfriends for brunch the other day. Atmosphere is intimate (we sat in the wine room), and the decor is simple and trendy. Trendy music plays in the background, and the service is very attentive (sometimes at times a little too attentive). Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. When you first get there they bring you water and mini-biscuits with apple butter (delicious!). The only qualm I had with the prices was the orange juice ($3-something for one glass??). more

Great for Thanksgiving!! 12/25/2007

As a tradition, my family and I come here for Thanksgiving each year to eat. Although the hostesses are rude every year, the service is wonderful. I have never encountered a problem and the food is great. But, I would recommend (if your eating there on Thanksgiving), to pick the steak instead of the turkey dinner. The sauce that they put on the turkey ruins the taste. Also, try the eggnog martini, the best ever. The food and drinks are pricy, but it's worth it instead of slaving yourself in the kitchen. Make sure you reserve ahead of time. Parking has never been a problem! Pros: good food, service, and drinks Cons: expensive, rude hostesses more

Great restaurant all around! 11/12/2007

My boyfriend took me to this restaurant for my birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted and how wonderful the service was. They knew it was our first time visiting the restaurant, so the manager personally came by to check on us and gave us complimentary crab cake appetizers! (it was delicious). We sat up in the lounge area, and it had a great view, and was more private and quiet, which made the dinner special and romantic. I would definitely go back again! Pros: food, service Cons: parking more

Best wrap I've had! 9/7/2007

A friend of mine decided to take me here for lunch one afternoon. Usually, we go to old haunts around the main village area, but Benjy's is hidden a couple blocks away and it's quite a find! The host was extremely nice and we got seated right away. At a glance, the majority of the crowd at lunch is business (lots of suits, heels, etc) but there isn't a dress code of any kind. The downstairs dining room is contemporary and sleek. Metal tables, wood wired chairs, corner booths with narrow glass wrapping around the whole room. There were also strings of lights hanging from the ceiling with modern art in random places on the walls. We were given a menu just for lunch and there were so many choices! There were full entrees of chicken, fish, beef, along with pizzas, innovative salads and small dishes. The food is I guess ""innovative american cuisine"" (like for breaded meat items maybe mix crushed pecans with it or a hamburger salad minus the bun). I also noticed that the restaurant also has a slight asian influence to it (chips and crackers given at the table have sesame seeds with a fortune cookie consistency along with ginger dipping sauces or asian coleslaw along with entrees). I ordered the mediterranean chicken wrap along with pesto grilled vegetables. SO good. The wrap was lightly toasted, but still soft and it was filled with warm arugula, tomatoes, mushrooms, chicken and this avocado paste/dressing. And the wrap is cut into three generous portions! I was really impressed. I also ordered pomagranate cherry sparkling juice and that was really good as well. I'd come back to try more from the menu, but I came back again this week with another friend of mine and had the same thing! Its just that good. Pros: Great food (worth the $), trendy, service, ambience Cons: none so far! more

Great drinks! 7/4/2007

Fabulous! Great Drinks! Go early or stay after to have drinks at the bar! I love this restaurant it feels like NYC! more

Decadent Brunch! 6/22/2007

Go and get the Signature French Toast! It is rolled in pecans - I believe - to give it a cruchier exterior. It is a wonderfully decadent experience for a special brunch. The portion size is HUGE, so plan to share or take home the left-overs. It reheats well in the oven (just be sure not to pour syrup on the portions you want to save for later). more

One of the best in h-town but get there early 3/25/2007

My wife and I and six of her family members dined here on a saturday night around 9 pm. It took us about 15 min. to find a parking spot. when we got in it was so crowded it was like they were giving free food away. so were detoured upstairs to the lounge and it was more crowded than downstairs. the atmosphere was lively and entertaining. We waited 30 minutes for our table and after that it was heaven. the service was fantastic, and the food was dynamic. I recommend this place as dinner for two, or ladies/guys night out. All in all my family enjoyed themselves and can't wait to go back again. Make sure you get here earlier, it's hard too get a seat, but if it's too crowded it usually means the restaurant is great. Pros: Excellent service, delicious food and desserts. Cons: Next time I'll come earlier in the evening, or make reservations. more

Great service and food 2/10/2007

My fiance took me to Benjy's for our Valentine's dinner this year, and it was wonderful. We had made reservations and were seated promptly. The waitress came by within minutes with water and bread crisps and told us the specials. We ordered an appetizer, entrees, and dessert, and everything tasted delicious. I ordered the salmon, and it was cooked just the way I liked it (some restaurants make it too dry). Our water glasses never reached empty - the waitstaff filled them frequently enough. Portions were bigger than what I expected from a nice restaurant. Even my fiance was full!\r Only complaint I have was the table we were seated in - it was a long table where I was sitting on the booth side and fiance was seated in a chair (reminded me of Chesecake Factory). We had to lean over the table to hear each other talk, and we could hear the couples on either side of us talk also. It would have been much more romantic to sit at one of their four-sided tables where we could sit closer together. Overall ambience was less romantic than what I expected.\r However, the food and service exceeded both of our expectations, so we will definitely be back at Benjy's in the future. Pros: Food and service, easy parking Cons: Could be more romantic more

Decent bar scene upstairs, terrible food, bad service 2/2/2007

The FOOD was TERRBILE. My wife's steak was tough and flavorless & they think they are so good that they don't carry any steak sauce (talk about misconceptions!). My margarita pizza was terrible as well. I think they simply picked up food that had been lying around all day and popped it into the microwave. \r \r Our waiter was by far one of the worst waiters I've come across in a while. While my wife was trying to decide what she wanted, he simply walked away rather than helping her decide. We had to ask him to take our order otherwise he was planning on walking away without taking our order. I think because our party comprised of 6 people, his tip was guaranteed and so he wasn't too bothered. \r \r To top it off, they were trying to rush us towards the end (they wanted to close down) and so the bus boy/man was grabbing the cutlery and crockery off our table. In his mad rush, he spilled meat sauce over one friend's jacket and another's arm. \r \r In conclusion, the FOOD and SERVICE are HORRIBLE. The bar upstairs is pretty cool. Packed but it usually packs a decent crowd (age group is over 30). Pros: Ambiance Cons: Terrible food & service more

Nice atmosphere, tasty food 1/12/2007

We went on a Tuesday evening around 8:00 and the place was packed! No problem, we went and ate upstairs in the lounge. The waitstaff here is freindly and comfortable. We had drinks and then ordered. The food came out quickly. My Ahi Tuna was excellent; I cleaned my plate. The decor is modern yet casual. I will probably make a reservation next time. First impression was very good for me and I will return, Pros: food, service, atmosphere, location Cons: it gets busy, make a reservation more

*EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE* 12/16/2006

I went in last night (Friday night) for a bday party w/ 5 other girls. The place was packed!! We were told the wait was an hour...we went upstairs to the lounge for a drink to wait. After about 20mins our waiter gave us a complimentary pizza. We were surprised and delighted! The pizza was sooo good. The manager, Keith, came up after the hour wait to let us know we were next. FINALLY, after an hour and a half, we got our table. Literally two minutes later we had complimentary appetizers on the table!!! The manager & our waiter made sure everything was PERFECT!!! Our food did not take long to come out after we ordered even though it was still busy. THE FOOD WAS WORTH THE WAIT, SERIOUSLY!! The brie and portabello enchiladas were delicious!!!!!! They brought out the bday chocalate cake, also on the house. ALL I CAN SAY IS THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND. They definatley know how to take care of their patrons....I HIGHLY recommend Benjy's...we had the best time ever. I have NEVER had better service!! Pros: SERVICE, food, ambience Cons: MAKE RESERVATIONS more

Great date restaurant! 11/12/2006

This is the perfect place to go on a date. The atmosphere is hip, yet romantic, and the food and service are wonderful. The wine list is excellent and the halibut special I had recently was delicious. The bar upstairs makes for a nice place to enjoy an after dinner drink too. Definitely make reservations a couple days early if you want a 7-9 p.m. reservation on a weekend. Expect to spend about $100 - $150 per couple with wine, appetizers and your main course. more

A Favorite... 11/5/2006

This restaurant has been a favorite for years. The goat cheese appetizer was fantastic! Don't forget to visit the lounge upstairs. more

Chocolate Cake is a Girl's Best Friend! 10/26/2006

Fellas- interested in a little lovin' with your date after dinner? DON'T SKIP DESSERT! Well- not here. This chocolate cake has been scientifically proven to yield the same results as that 24Karat gem sitting in Tiffany's window, but only a few grand less. Check please! more

Great food, Great atmosphere 10/2/2006

Just got back from my first trip to this establishment. The food was GREAT, well seasoned and very tasty. The service and presentation was excelent. My date and I were very impressed by the atmosphere and service. We were even allowed to sit and talk after dinner until we were ready to leave. The price was also very reasonable. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: None. more

Disappointing 9/9/2006

One of my college friends came into town and the last night she was here, I took her out to Benjy's. I had heard good things. We went in about 8:30 on a Monday or Tuesday night. Headed upstairs to the bar where we were ignored by the bartender who was talking to a couple sitting at the bar. We walked up to the bar...went back and sat down and he never acknowledged that we were there. We headed downstairs where we told the hostess, we'd prefer a table since we were not served at the bar. The food was good. Our waiter gave our table to another waiter right after our food was delivered. There were two tables that came in after we did, so it wasn't like we were the holding everyone up from leaving. She was disappointed and I was not as impressed as I should've been. I won't be back and if I am...it certainly won't be to the bar. more

Best Dinner We've Ever Had! 7/20/2006

My husband and I dine at Benjy's once a month or so and never leave disappointed. We love how they change the decor and menu every few months and the waitstaff is always personable. Last night we dined w/ a large group and went with our waiter, Kent's, suggestions and ""WOW"" is all I can say! Roasted peach puff pastry followed by any unbelievable blue nose bass w/ a Morrocan twist was surprising and wonderful, the chef is a genius! Our guests were there for the first time and could not stop raving about the service and food and we were able to order hard-to-get bottles of wine that they had not been able to get at their own favorite spots! Although we are not as ""hip"" as many of the guests there, we always feel right at home. The manager ended our wonderful evening by bringing out Benjy's Mom's Chocolate Cake for our table to welcome the new-comers who I know will be regulars from now on. Keep up the great work, I wish more places would go the extra mile like these guys do!! Pros: Creative, fresh menu items Cons: none! more

Great restaurant. 7/2/2006

It can get crowded at times so reservations are in order. But we have been there a number of times and even during peak hours the food was great, the menu varied and the service excellent. more
