What a bummer! 2/6/2010

My first hint that this wasn't going to be a good experience was when one couple got up and left - the service was so slow and they were completely ignored! The food was so-so... The service was terrible. Beyond slow. My son and husband left and they STILL ignored me while I was waiting for the check. Too pricey for the food and experience. Disappointing! Pros: Cool way to restore old train station Cons: So-so food and terrible, slow service more

Great food in a relaxing atmosphere 10/8/2009

Everything on the menu has a definite cajun flavor and there is something on the menu for everyone. I love everything I've tasted and have to force myself to try something different on each trip. The price are reasonable and the servings are very large. The food is the best cajun you're going to get outside of Louisiana. Pros: Menu variety...wonderful shrimp and grits Cons: Parking can be limited more

A Great Night Out! 10/9/2008

I was a little hesitant to eat here after reading the reviews online, but I also know I never hesitate to give a bad review as opposed to a good one, so I thought I would do the Depeaux some justice online! Pros: The food and the service, the price matched the portion size Cons: Parking could get tricky, but we got there early and it was easy more

Good food, nice atmosphere, horrible drinks! 9/6/2008

I liked the food. I ended up getting a fish dish (sorry, can't remember which one) and it was well-seasoned and nicely cooked. The owner was very personable, and offered us a sample of the gator, which turned out to be very tasty. I also loved the gorgeous old building. The drinks that we grabbed at the bar were pretty much undrinkable. I ended up just grabbing a Coke during dinner. All in all, I would certainly go back. Pros: Gorgeous setting, decent food Cons: pretty small portions for the price, poorly executed drinks at the bar more

Yummy Shrimp 'N Grits 8/20/2008

I went with a group and we really enjoyed it. The jambalaya is a bit weird though - very dry for some reason and not what we expected. Tasty but more like beans and rice. The shrimp and grits was yummy as were the desserts - especially the bread pudding. Service was average but overall we thought it was a good value. Portions were large. Atmosphere is very casual. Oh, and the crawfish bread was yummy. It doesn't seem like authentic New Orleans but it was a pretty good imitation. Pros: Most of the food was tasty - came out hot and fast Cons: jambalaya was dry - not what typical jambalaya is like. Very little parking - mostly street parking more

what a shame 8/3/2008

After working hard on the volunteer committee to save the old train station, I was really hoping this wonderful building and location would be put to better use than this mediocre restaurant. The food is not good .I lived in New Orleans for 4 years and make a great gumbo..theirs was just bad. I took my husband and 2 grown children and none of the food was very good. Why couldn't Decatur put in a better place? I am hopeful that something else will take it's place..The Buckhead Diner would be perfect...just name it the Decatur Diner and I will be there. more

decent food, but inconsistent service and somewhat overpriced 5/7/2008

I've been here a few times, and while the food is pretty good, the service ranges from attentive and quick to downright rude. Additionally, for entrees that are 15$ and up, it would be nice if the staff could actually manage to wipe down tables or ensure that place settings are clean. Previously, we've encountered both a table that was a sticky mess and the last time we went, one of the place settings had red sauce all over the napkin! We attempted to come again last Thursday hoping for a cleaner dining experience, and upon walking in at 9 pm when there were still diners outside and in, the manager barked ""We're closed!"" the second I stepped in the door. We've been there past 9 on other nights and when I asked why, he rudely responded ""Because we're closing early tonight!"" without any further explanation! Pros: great beer on tap, tasty po-boys Cons: parking, service more

Good Place for Drinks with Friends and some food 4/30/2008

I found this place to be a good atmosphere to have some fun and drinks with friends. The catagory 3 hurricane drink is enough to knock your socks off, for those with adventerous spirits you can go up to catagory 5. The food is pretty good, stick to the cajun cuisine and you can't go wrong, the rest is about average. Service is very nice and friendly and I have seen the owner there each time I have gone. The dessert of french toast with berries and liquor syrup on top is out of this world, but don't be afraid to send it back if they burn it a bit too much for your taste. All in all a good restaurant that I enjoy going to more then a few times a month. Pros: Cajun Cuisine, Dessert, Hurricane Drinks Cons: Parking, Standard Bar Food Not So Great more

Depeaux - I'd rather stay on the train 4/28/2008

I dine out usually two to three times a week and this BY FAR had to be one of the WORST dining experiences I've ever had since moving to Atlanta 15 yrs ago. The waiter smarted-off when we asked to order our drinks and food at the same time. He took 40 mins to bring the only round of drinks ordered after spending 20 mins outside. The food was at best mediocre, the hush puppies are very dark brown and so hard you couldn't spear them with your folk and would have substituted nicely at the driving range. It took twenty minutes to get the bill which included a charge for a ""complimentary "" dessert for the guest celebrating a birthday. The owners seemed to not get that sending a bad waiter back over to a table of 10 who had just complained about him was a bad idea. Service from staff and owners was terrible and after reading the reviews both here and on Yelp I really wish I could give minus stars b/c one star is not even remotely accurate to how horrible the Depeaux was overall which is sad considering we all went in with high expectations. There will be no return trips for any of us. Cons: staff & owners incompetenent with handling customer issues. Terrible attitudes more

You might want to choose another place... 4/1/2008

The place was packed the night my mom and I went in, and that seemed like a good sign. However, it was unbelievably loud. She and I were shouting across the table at each other the whole time. When we sat down, the table was sticky and kinda gross. The waitstaff seemed friendly, but almost everything we ordered arrived either wrong or not tasty at all. The ettoufe (sp?) was really disappointing... it didn't even look like etouffe. And it tasted a week old. Anyway, the dessert (Lost Fruit... can't remember the French translation) was the highlight of the night, but honestly, I could have made it myself and had it turn out just as good. I really loved the turn-of-the-century building itself, but I think a lot more could have been made from this place. All the seafood tasted really fishy and unfresh. I won't be going back. more

New Orleans should be offended 3/29/2008

As a single Mom with three kids, I hardly ever have free time and some cash to go out for a meal. Pros: we did not get sick Cons: everything else more

Bad Service in the Bar 3/9/2008

I, along with 6 co-workers, spent a couple hours after work this Friday at this establishment. We had been there a few times before and enjoyed the food and atmosphere immensely. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy ourselves at all this last time and it was all because of one of the employees who served us in the bar. He was extremely rude and disrespectful to our group as a whole. He overcharged us by adding on a fictitious drink and crawfish bread, told us he would ""cut us off""( which was a strange 'joke' because none of us had more than 2 drinks), refused to split up our check (without breaking it up, it made things all the more confusing since he overcharged us and added in his obligatory 20% gratuity which he certainly didn't deserve), and insulted one of the women in our group by implying that she was too stupid to figure out the bill. Personally, I have no idea why he was so insolent. We weren't drunk, nor disrespectful to him at any time which makes this spent evening very disconcerting because we would have stayed longer. Hey, we all make mistakes and we weren't going to ""ride him"" for goofing up our order. Regretfully, I would probably never return with that man still working there. We felt completely uncomfortable and downright upset. Pros: Crawfish Bread and Frogs Legs, close to MARTA Cons: Bar Service more

awful service, won't go back 2/19/2008

worst service EVER. we never actually got to eat here because no one would serve us. we went on a sunday evening and the place was empty (there were 4 other tables). we were there for 20 minutes and no one even brought us water, much less took our order! our waiter refused to make eye contact, and wouldn't walk by our table (even though he only had 2 other tables, one of which got their check while we were there) and wasn't doing anything). the hostess did yell at him a bunch of times but never offered to take our order or apologize (she stood sideways at the podium w/ her back to us the entire time). we ended up having to leave and walked to carpe diem so we could EAT! such a shame, the menu looked good... but now we'll never know because none of us will ever go back. Pros: that it is close to other restaurants, so when you walk out, you won't have to walk far to get good food Cons: service, never got to order to eat more

Tries too hard 12/11/2007

The atmosphere seems forced. The music is disruptively loud and the decor's character is unnatural. The food was fine. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too flavorful, not too bland. The catfish was outstanding, but the fries were soggy. Their grouper did not taste fresh. It was over cooked and tough. Their gumbo tasted floury. The drinks were strong and good though. I would be interested to try it in the summer when you can sit outside. Pros: Strong cocktails. Cons: Most everything else. more

Best Time Ever 10/23/2007

We first went to Depeaux on their third week. My wife and I had an incredible experience and were surprised when we found out that it was only their third week. Being from Breaux Bridge, LA, we found their food to be very authentic and the atmosphere to be just like home. The staff is warm & friendly, the owners came and talked to us, as they did with the other tables in the dining room. Don't tell my mother, but their gumbo is the best I've ever had. The crawfish bread and their fried seafood platter is good enough for my last meal. Their hurricanes are the strongest I've every had (which is a good thing). My wife loved the Greyhound Spritzer. Their home-made desserts were as good as any ""dessert place's"" that I've had. Pros: Great prices, great food, great service more

Better head to the Big Easy instead if you want creole 9/22/2007

My friend and I went to dinner at Depeaux last evening and neither of us enjoyed the food. We stepped inside the restaurant to be seated, but due to the loud volume inside and the nice weather outside, we opted for outdoor seating. The outdoor seating was probably the best part of the experience. We ordered 2 appetizers, crawfish etouffee and crab & crawfish bouillettes. The etouffee was rather bland and just didn't seem that fresh; it had a dark, watery roux. I've had etouffee on several different occasions in New Orleans, as well as Savannah, and in my experience the roux has always been lighter and slightly thicker (and the crawfish fresher). In my opinion a dish like this should be a Cajun/Creole restaurant's signature dish, but it didn't stand out here. The bouillettes were rather doughy. We hoped for something better when we ordered the Grouper Ponchartrain and Depeaux's Big Easy, but we were out of luck. I've never had a meal in a restaurant that was so salty. I didn't even eat half of it because it was so hard to take. My friend felt they had a ways to go in understanding the cooking of collard greens as well. I was ready to leave it at that but my friend likes desserts and we agreed to split the Banana Royale (again, I guess we were hoping for something better). The bananas were good, but I'm pretty sure the pound cake they topped was by Sara Lee. Not very impressive; Sara Lee doesn't cut it for an almost $7.00 dessert. The service was attentive but nothing special. Overall, I'd say the garlic bread and the beer were the best things I had. Not worth the money or the assault on your taste buds. Pros: outdoor seating, garlic bread Cons: the food more

Great food, fun atmosphere, Decatur's best outdoor seating. 9/18/2007

I'm not from New Orleans, so I can't vouch for the authenticity, but the food was great. Simple, well prepeared, fresh ingredients. I didn't find their menu to be extremely expensive. They have prices ranging from $11 - $18 most dishes right at $15. Their drinks are extremely well priced ($5 for 22oz beer!). The dining room was loud (w/ 20 ft ceilings, what do you expect?) but the bar was more mellow and the outdoor seating can't be beat. Overall, great food at a good value. Pros: Great friendly service, tasty food, strong drinks. Cons: Boisterous dining room, only one location. more

The Depeaux is Joe's Crabshack's older brother... 9/13/2007

Which isn't a good thing. We dined at the Depeaux tonight, and we (our party of 3) were pretty disappointed. When we looked at the menu, we couldn't believe the prices, they were HIGH. I don't consider myself a cheap person, but If I am going to spend $18 on an entree, I'd rather have it served on a plate and not in a plastic basket with a tissue liner. Also the music and decor was loud and tacky, in a Spaghetti Factory sort of way. I understand they spent a Shed load of money renovating the old depot and they need to recover their costs, but geez?!?!? This kind of restaurant belongs in Downtown Atlanta with other over priced restaurants. Pros: Nice Service, Prompt. Cons: Loud, way overpriced for Decatur. more

Cajun/Creole Train Has Arrived In Decatur! BBQ Shrimp! 9/4/2007

This place has great Cajun & Creole dishes from authentic South Louisiana receipes. And this family has brought life, back to this wonderful old train depot, right off the square. The city had them move it away from it's orginal location near the tracks, before the restoration started. And what a beautiful job. Terrific outdoor seating this time of year. But the food, is what it's all about. The Gumbo has to be some of the best we've had outside the Big Easy. Just add the amount of hot sauce you like, and go for it. The Shrimp Creole was just the right amount of spice. But what we loved the best, was the New Orleans BBQ Shrimp. Just dip some french bread into this, and wash it down with one of their Hurricanes. Half-price 4-7, every Thur-Sat. And the staff knows what they are doing. This place is a welcome dining choice for Decatur! Pros: Great Historical Building, Gumbo, and BBQ Shrimp! Cons: Not Open For Brunch Yet, But Coming Soon! more

Great Gumbo 9/3/2007

A Great addition to the choices for dining in Decatur. I believe it is the only Cajun Restaurant in this area. They serve everything, including gator and frog legs. However, I stuck to the seafood dishes and gumbo. I was quite impressed. My husband had the crawfish, which is good, if you like spicy, because it is really spicy. Pros: Gumbo Cons: Limited parking during busy hours. more
