Very Disappointing 12/25/2009

We went on a Tuesday night between 5:15 and 6:45 pm. The French Onion Soup had a bad aftertaste and we found it to be uneatable. The ribs were tender but the BBQ sauce was too spicy. I ended up taking them home and washing off the sauce. The chicken and fish were greasy. The green beans had the same aftertaste as the soup and we are not fans of skins in our mashed potatoes. The mac and cheese tasted like flour. I guess the cook that was on the show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives had the night off. The best Fried Chicken that I've had thusfar has been at Gabe's in Glenwood, IL. The only thing that was excellant that night was the waitress. I will not be spending another $85.00 on there food again. more

Famed fried chicken along Route 66 -- somewhat disappointing 4/10/2006

Perhaps it was the hype that I've heard about Dell Rhea's which gave me unrealistic expectations, but I was a little let down by my experience at Dell Rhea's. I went one day for the lunch buffet, which commanded a surprisingly high price, as I recall. From what I've read, Dell Rhea's, along with White Fence Farms, offer the best fried chicken in the Chicago area (though some like to mention Harold's Chicken Shack too). The day that I went, the chicken was a little on the greasy side. The first piece was very good, while the second piece was merely adequate. I left feeling full but with a sense that I hadn't received my money's worth. I'll probably give it another shot, as it enjoys a very good reputation, but I'll order from the menu instead of the buffet. more

  • Known for its good food, fair prices, and friendly faces, Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket got its humble beginnings sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s in an old gas station lunch counter. Today it sits adjacent to its original location as its popularity required expansion. Chicken Basket was inducted in the Route 66 Hall of Fame in June of 1992 and was chosen as The Best Fried Chicken in the Chicagoland Area by Pat Bruno of the Chicago Sun Times in 1993. Most recently, the Chicken Basket was inducted into The National Register of Historic Places in May of 2006.

    We pride ourselves on our world famous fried chicken and invite you to come and taste it for yourself. Our goal has long been to serve our customers the freshest, most outstanding food.
