Most Authentic Southern cooking in the North 6/23/2010

I have eaten here a number of times and it is probably the best food in Grand Rapids and also probably the best food i have eaten since i moved up here from Tennessee 12 years ago. I was raised on pulled pork and brisket The only 2 places i have eaten in the country that has better food but not by much is the quick stop BBQ market in my home town of Caryville, TN and a little BBQ shed outside Greenville, SC. The meat is so tender and juice its falls off the bone this guy knows how to BBQ. Its truly a hidden gem of the North that few people around here seem to know about. If you have not yet been there you have to check it out. Pros: Best BBQ North of the mason dixon line Cons: 0 cons more

Great BBQ!! 1/8/2009

1st time there today with some guys from work. Very small dining area but excellent food. Next time I go I'll stick with the meats instead of the chili. I had the Little Piglet Chili which had chili, slice smoked pork and smoked sausages. The chili wasn't bad but a bit too tangy for me. What saved it for me was the smoked meat and sausage. I can't say enough about the taste of the meats. My friends had pulled pork which was really chopped pork and not the basic pulled. I am not a fan of pulled pork so I found their chopped method very good. Another also had smoked rib tips and it was great cuz I helped myself to some. Pros: Excellent smoked meats Cons: small eating area, better to order and delivered more

Authentic Southern BBQ here in Michigan 2/22/2007

This place is a hidden gem. I have been eating here for years and recently had them cater my wedding on Lake Michigan and boy did I get the compliments!! This is authentic, husband and wife owned. They moved here from Texas and brought along southern BBQ. Sandman's is good but they have modernized and are no longer a small scale business. This place takes the time to do the ""low and slow"" on their meat and the wife home makes the cornbread and BBQ beans. They Do their BBQ how all the world's best competition people do it, low and slow with no sauce. They give you the choice of sauce to put on it after it is all done, you can truly taste the meat and the juices and add the BBQ sauce of your choice...and it is good enough that the sauce is not absolutley necessary. I have traveled to Kansas City, North Carolina and Tennesse and this beats every place I have been except one in Tennessee. If you are looking for good authentic southern bbq here in michigan, this is the place to go, I would drive from Kansas City just to get it. The average meal is meat and two sides. Plenty to fill you up for around $8-$12. more
