Editorial review from Citysearch 7/2/2015

The transmission in my vehicle started kicking a bit and some warning lights came on. I took it first to my primary mechanic who I trust very much. He plugged in his code-reader and said he got codes for sensor solenoids which is something they don't do in that shop. I took my vehicle to Cottman. A mechanic named Randy was the only one there, the owner, Steve, was out. Randy spent an hour messing with my car and finally said he couldn't get his code reader to communicate with my car's computer. He said they would need to do a 2 hour diagnosis which he said would cost me about $100. I made an appointment to come back the next day. When I went back for the appointment, the owner Steve was there. He said the so-called ""diagnosis"" would cost me $105 per hour, and I needed to authorize 2 hours for the work. I asked him if it would take 2 hours, he said if not then he would only charge me for the time it did take. I should have stayed to watch them do the ""work,"" but I left, naively believing they would do the diagnosis and be honest about the results. When Steve called me back, he said the whole computer in my vehicle was out and it would need to be replaced before he could read any codes to find out what was wrong with the transmission. He said it would cost upwards of $1300, BUT he was going to deduct $150 for the cost of the [fake] diagnosis. How kind. On recommendation from a wrecker driver who said he used to drive for Cottman but had to quit because they are, ""Notorious for ripping people off,"" I took it to a small transmission shop. The owner of that shop said he didn't understand why Cottman's said they couldn't communicate with my computer, because he had no problems doing so. He plugged the code-reader in to show me what was coming up. Low and behold-it was the sensor solenoid, just as my primary mechanic said in the first place. This transmission shop owner explained a couple of options, quoted me a price for the part and told me the cost of the labor. Very reasonable. I went straight to Cottman, marched back behind the desk and told Steve to show me what he had in his computer in regards to my vehicle. He pulled up one page that only said they couldn't communicate with my vehicle's computer. I asked him if they actually did a 2 hour diagnostic for $100 per hour. He said ""Oh, you mean this"" and pulled some papers out of a file. I asked him if there was anything in his computer that said I owe him money and he said no. I told him to print and sign something confirming that I owe him nothing. He said he just didn't understand why I was upset. I told him I figured out his scam: (1) Lie to me about communication problems and claim that I need a whole new computer (2) Charge me $1300 for work that they were not going to do because it didn't need to be done (3) After pretending to change out the whole computer, he was going to say 'Oh, NOW we can communicate, and NOW we see the problem codes' in order to charge me again for the real problem. He didn't deny it at all, he just started talking about voltages. I told him I did not need to hear his voltage nonsense and told him to print and sign the paper so I could be on my way, which he did. Every mechanic that I have talked to (plus the wrecker driver) has said the same thing- NEVER GO TO COTTMAN TRANSMISSION. I have since looked at some other reviews and have found that this type of thing is pretty standard practice for them. Steve is a con-man, and obviously trains his mechanics (Randy) to take as much as they can con from their customers. more

Im never taking any of my vehicles to Cottmans transmission again. Ive already paid these guys a 1000 dollars. And they tell me I cant have my vehicle back yet because some lady has to process my paperwork. Jennifer doesnt know how to communicate. And the district manager I talked to said they will only have my truck for 2 days that was a lie. Its been almost a week. NEVER TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO COTTMANS TRANSMISSION THEY OUR VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I do alot of mechanic work on customers cars. Im never going to recommend COTTMANS TRANSMISSION to any one. I have a very sour taste in my mouth. You have been warned... more

New 2011 Owners! Old problems seem to be fixed!!! 6/18/2011

I took my 2006 For Escape Hybrid into Cottman of Round Rock to have a current vehicle analysis done on it and to fix any problems. After reading the negative reviews that you can find on the internet I obviously had my doubts. I found out they have brand new owners as of 2011. As a female that knows NOTHING about cars they did not take advantage of me. They treated me with respect and never once made me feel "dumb". No "red flags" went up while working with the staff or the owner. They went above and beyond what I paid them to do. Things have definitely seemed to change completely with the new owners. Granted I did not have an experience with the old owners prior to 2011, but I cannot imagine those negative issues happening now. Good luck! I hope you have the same experience I had! more

A+ Honest Business! 6/16/2011

I took my 2006 Ford Escape in to them back in late March to get a current vehicle analysis done on it since I had just purchased it. Not only were they very thorough, but they were fast too. They have new owners so I believe that all of the past problems are being resolved or have already been resolved. I will take either of my vehicles to Cottman Round Rock or any of the other Austin locations (same owners) for any future work (Transmission or otherwise). more

I had my truck looked at here several years back for transmission problems. They were very friendly and gave me a estimate but I did not have the work done. more

Dishonest Shop - DO NOT TRUST 11/5/2008

I took my truck here. It had 175k miles. I thought it might be the transmission. The exceedingly polite and courteous shop manager did the 21 point check. He called me to say there was MAJOR transmission damage, and a rebuild was required. When I said I would like to take it to another shop for a second opinion, he told me it was unsafe to drive, and that I was risking my life and the life of others if I took it off his lot.\r \r I took it to the dealership, where they said the transmission was solid, but I needed new spark plugs and plug wires. THis was $200 vs. $2000 for a transmission rebuild that was not needed!!!! more

Bad place to take your car ! 3/20/2007

I was at a Hyundai dealer 55 miles from cottmans. On the phone, cottman said they could fix my trans for $1600 and change out the door. Great, I had my car towed for $175. cottman got my car Wednesday night, said that it would be done Saturday, oh and now it was going to be $1700 and change. The final cost was $1885 I still don't have my car five days later. I was putting down $1300 with the remainder in two days they said NO! Must be paid in full. However, they won't charge me storage, WOW! I am in the Army, my wife and kids must take me to work at 5:00am and then go back to school and work 55 miles away with one car. THANKS cottman! more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR TRANSMISSION HERE 8/1/2006

I took my vehicle in to have a seal replaced and was quoted $325, by the next afternoon I was told I needed to rebuild the transmission at a cost of $1833. This was in February, it is now July and the transmission is still not fixed properly. It has been there 4 times and now won't even shift out of 1st gear. And now they want to "fix it" one more time before giving me my money back. Please save yourself the stress and headaches and go some where else. PROS: new Manager at Round Rock store is polite CONS: The owner refuses to return phone calls. more
