Good, but NOT the best 10/29/2008

VERY crowded, very dirty. Food is average for BBQ. We recommend Corkeys or Interstate for a great Memphis dinner more

An eating experience 9/14/2008

This place is an eating experience; the crowded, rustic atmostphere's probably part of what contributes to the attraction. There have been 4 to 6 of us each visit and we have tried about everything and liked it all. My favorite is the pig fries--french fried sweet potatoes. My 30-something daughter's favorite is bar-b-que nachos of all things! The food is worth returning for. We ask to go here every time we visit our daughter and son-in-law since they took us there after their move to Memphis. The wait staff can be brusk, rude (?) as in don't say you don't want anything on your sandwich then ask for mustard or ketchup. No condiments are kept on the table and causes at least one waitress great consternation when you ask for them after your order comes. Pros: Rustic atmosphere, good food--some kind of bar-b-que for everyone Cons: Parking very limited, staff can be abrupt more

What's all the fuss? 2/13/2008

After all of the great things I heard about this place, I have to say I was a bit let down. As a Memphis native, I am very particular to BBQ especially IN the Memphis area. I had the 2 meat plate which came with a small slab of ribs and chopped BBQ. The ribs were not bad, but nothing to write home about either. The Chopped BBQ was mushy and rather tasteless. The service was quite rude and seemed bothered by any sort of request. The place is rather small - so when it begins to get busy, one begins to feel crammed in and pressured to hurry out. This place is wayyyy over-hyped! If you are visiting Memphis, avoid this place. Try Interstate BBQ, Payne's, or even Central BBQ. That is the real Memphis deal! And they are NICE people! more

Good eats 2/11/2008

Good eats, but management was rude when we had an issue with our bill. They treated us pretty bad and it was an error on the part of our server. more

Great food! Coconut Cream Pie is Amazing...the perfect end to a great meal! 2/6/2008

Food here is great..no doubt. The smell when you walk in is wonderful and the place stays crowded. Crowds can be a negative thing, but not in a restaurant...they are doing something right if they keep the seats filled. My 5 year old loves going to eat there, so does my husband and so do I. We all win! There is something on the menu for everyone and you should go just for the experience if nothing else. The place feels like history must have happened there and the guests that frequent the place are all nice people. The Boss Man salad is wonderful, the sauce is great and the banana pudding is simply marvelous! \r The only area of concern in this place is the inconsistent service we get. I saw another review about some of the wait staff being intimidating...I would have to agree. Even so, the ladies at the front counter are always gracious and courteous. Besides, there are always a few bad apples in the bunch. more

good food, but the service is interesting.... 1/4/2008

Food is always delic, but there are a few servers there that almost make me scared to ask for anything extra..... rough and tough.... certainly makes the experience less than enjoyable. Pros: food Cons: service more

BBQ must eat 11/4/2007

i work at a hotel in germantown and this is the only place i ever recomend for the guests to go. they always come in looking for ""real memphis style BBQ"" with teh idea that Corky's is that. this is a farce. if you are in the area, that is the tristate area, you simply must have this BBQ. Pros: dry or muddy ribs, pulled pork, and their locally famous sweat tea Cons: parking lines, sometimes more

Long way for so-so BBQ. 10/24/2007

Flew 1850 miles and drove 30 miles just to get ?so-so? BBQ. This place it rated as perhaps the ?Q? in Memphis but I didn?t see it. My lunch was pork ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were dry and hard; the silver skin on the backside was like tough paper. The pulled pork was very good and their sauces were on the upside as far a sauce goes. The sweet potato fries were a little too sweet with spice. Ok would I go back? No! Pros: Good pulled pork. Cons: Hard tough pork ribs. more

Love the Texas Smoked Sausage 10/17/2006

Ribs are the best, pulled pork excellent but my favorite is the smoked sausage sandwich! If in the area is a can't miss place! Fortunately my daughter and family live in Germantown and the Commissary is my first stop when there. Pros: great food, fast service Cons: slow on service follow-up at times, parking often difficult more

Great food 8/1/2006

The barbecue sandwiches are terrific, and so is the rest of the food. I never knew devilled eggs could be so good. The bad part is I only live 2 minutes away, so it's tough to stay out of there. Parking is a problem, though. Pros: Devilled eggs Cons: Parking, such as it is more

User review by catmom613 1/2/2006

My family lives IN Germantown, loves barbeque & the ""down home"" flavor we find here. We LUV the pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw & the desserts are out-of-this-world!!! My personal favorite is the caramel cake---with the coconut cream pie & banana pudding running a very close 2nd! I am always disappointed with the ""baked beans"" as they taste like warmed-up, canned pork 'n beans---needs a BIG improvement here! The ambiance is warm, cozy & old-timey! We are thrilled that we have a restaurant that is a MUST for out-of-towners!!! Pros: Ambiance, Inexpensive, Great desserts Cons: good parking, Flavorless beans, No personality waiter more

Best BBQ in Memphis 7/26/2005

As a former Memphian, I am confidant in saying that the Commissary has the best BBQ in town. The pulled pork has such a wonderful taste that you almost don't need the sauce. If you try to go eat at 7 pm on a Friday night, like most good BBQ places in Memphis, you will be waiting in line. However, food delivery is quick. I have a few tips for first timers. First, go early so you aren't stuck waiting in line. Second, the church across the street allows you to park in their parking lot. Finally, the best deal is to get the 6 pack to go. For $17, you get 1 lb of pulled pork, 6 buns, mild and hot sauce, a quart of beans and a pint of cole slaw. If you don't like those options, they will substitute just about sides for you at no charge. Pros: Incredible BBQ, Great Value, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

excellent 6/7/2005

Every time I've been to the commissary everything has been great. From the service to the food and the affordable prices... I recommend this place to everyone that wants good bar-b-q! Pros: everything more

Gtwn BBQ 12/1/2004

I am from Germantown and after eating BBQ from places like Corky's for years I found the best in my own backyard. The potato salad is the best anywhere and the banna pudding will make you ""slap yo mamma"" Pros: service, potato salad, bbq more

Best BBQ in Memphis 7/13/2004

I'm living in Memphis for the summer, and went on a mission to find the best barbecue place in town. I've eaten a LOT of BBQ while I've been here, and I can truly say this place has THE best ribs in Memphis. Even my pork-hating boyfriend sucked the bones dry! Pros: Fantastic food, Reasonable price more

Well Worth the Drive 6/1/2004

Cute little part of town where there appears to be lots of money -- and there is definately some X-cellent BBQ! Devilled Eggs go nicely with the incredible pulled pork sandwiches. Classic banana pudding with nilla vanilla wafers is made with real bananas! Nice folks run this place! Pros: food-catering, community, parking Cons: , can be crowded more

T-Dine 1/13/2004

This is the world's greatest coconut cream pie!!! I lve in Florida, but look forward to projects in the Memhis are - just for the Commissary! The BBQ is great, but have the pie first to be sure you have room for it all! Pros: Food, Pies, Large portions Cons: Could use more seats more

BEST BBQ & Coconut Pies 9/3/2002

I've tried almost all the BBQ Rib places in Memphis and I must say the Germantown Commissary is my favorite. If you like Coconuts, you'll love their pie too! more

Banana Pudding!! 8/7/2002

Where else can you get great BBQ with all the sides and have the best banana pudding? more

the best! 5/20/2002

I'm from Seattle, and we just don't get good barbecue up here. I was visiting for a wedding and had a chance to try this outstanding barbecue. Man, this was great food. I can't wait to make another trip to eat some more 'cue. And maybe next time I'll be there for Memphis in May so I can get my fill of all kinds of barbecue. more
