a great experience! 4/25/2006

The Lackawanna County Tour Mine Tour is a wonderful experience. It is a very educational and fun experience. They have special group tours for schools, homeschool groups, and other groups, as well as those for the general public (they fill in with the general public even on smaller group tours -- our homeschool group was small, and had a lot of others mixed in to fill the tour group openings). They are very affordable as well. It is a fun, exciting, and educational experience -- we all loved it. You are taken deep within the mine, given a tour of what miners in the area would have seen and done in their daily jobs. The mine does have a bit of a musty odor to it, which some in the group with respiratory issues found to be a bit irritating, but nothing severe. It is a wonderful experience! more

Feel like a coal miner 10/6/2005

This is an actual tour that takes you deep into the coal mine . You ride an actual coal car that was used to take the actual coal miners into the mine. They take you on an hour walking tour thrut he coal mine showing you what the miners had to deal with while digging for coal. THey ahve some neat littel demonstrations as you go and when you are finished you get a cute little coal miners certificatikon document that makes you a coal miner. more

Interesting tour 8/30/2005

My family and I went on this tour a couple of months ago. It's a nice day trip in the summer because it's much cooler in the mines. First, they bring you down a few hundred feet underground through the mine shaft in a small, but not too cramped box car. Then they lead you through some of the old mines on a tour, explaining the history of how the mining was done and a little about the workers. It lasts about a half hour. They have a neat gift shop here with jewelry and souveniers. A picnic area is also nearby for afternoon lunch. This is a nice experience for all age groups. more

Learn about mining 8/29/2005

I took this tour a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it. They take you down into the coal mines in a small box-car like tram for a tour. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is claustrophobic. They guide you in a tour through some of the mazes of the old mine and give you a lot of the history of the workers and the site itself. I found the explanation of the safety precautions the most interesting, such as the canary signaling oxygen was running out. Also, there are lots of huge wooden beams, but they weren't meant for a support structure. When you here them splitting, it is explained you knew you didn't have long to get out. Over all this was a very educational experience, and it was only around $5 per person. more

Lackawanna County's Coal Mine Tour 8/20/2005

If you grew up in NEPA like I did, you went on a school trip to the Coal Mine Tour. It's interesting to see a bit about the history of the area and to actually get to go into the mine. Needless to say, it's not for anyone who's claustrophobic. It's a nice place for a family outing, but be wary of the gift shop. Things are rather pricey there. Make sure to bring a sweater; it's rather cool down in the mine. more
