A special treat 8/13/2010

The staff is always very pleasant and customers are often offered a free sample chocolate. Everything is expensive, so it's a real treat to come here - a special occassion. Their hot chocolates are rich and gourmet - my favorite is the mayan. Most of all I love the gelatto. Again, the mayan is my favorite. I guess I'm all about spicy rich chocolate. more

Disappointing 3/24/2010

These chocolates are disappointing for the price. I love chocolate so I go here from time to time when it is the only place close by. The flavors and concoctions are interesting and would be quite good, but they are often stale. Maybe this shop doesn't turn the items often enough, but at $2 & $3 for a tiny chocolate, they should be perfect! more

The most amazing hot chocolate you'll ever experience 3/25/2009

Try the spicy hot chocolate. It is in an entirely different class from the usual mexican hot chocolate with cinnamon. You'll be hooked! Pros: Yummy chocolate Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Brave new chocolate 6/3/2008

Although the flavors are a bit scary at first it's definitely worth trying at least one even the firecracker chocolate which comes with pop rocks inside! But my all time favorite is the passion fruit caramel chocolate! more

"Chew-Wow" 2/19/2008

Crafting delicate bonbons with fillings of lemon-and-mint-infused caramel or dulce de leche buttercream, Chuao celebrates the art of the sweet. The chocolatier uses rich Venezuelan chocolate and fresh ingredients ranging from bananas and raspberries to mascarpone cheese. Bonbons and truffles are $1.75 apiece, with packages starting at $15 for nine pieces.\r \r \r Eyebrow-raising bonbons are among the chocolatier's most popular. Spiced with chili pepper, the "Picante" is filled with a California raisin "fondue" and Napa Valley cabernet caramel. And the "Chevere" -- a dark chocolate-covered buttercream blend of goat cheese, pear and crushed black pepper -- may not be for everyone. It truly has the taste and texture of the cheese.\r \r \r The Chocolate Cafe is larger than the Encinitas storefront where Chuao chocolates are made. The La Jolla shop's deep-red, chocolate and burnt-orange walls display tapestry-like descriptions of Chuao bonbons. Stainless-steel chairs, as well as tables of chocola more

Best Dessert 2/19/2008

Because of the name the chocolates always upstage the desserts but Chuao has got the best desserts in the San Diego area. They have an in house pastry chef located at their Encinitas location who is dedicated only to making desserts. She can be found in the Encinitas Kitchen on weekdays and makes not only the usual selection of incredible desserts but will make custom items for special occasions and full on cakes for weddings and events. The Pastry Chef Tricia Cariffe and the Executive Chef/owner Michael Antonorsi can be found together teaching bon bon classes at their Carlsbad factory nearly every Wednesday night. No one else in town is more committed to teaching and breaking new ground in dessert items than these two..what a treat! Pros: High quality, great cool element, cutting edge desserts Cons: not open late for after dinner coffee and dessert! more

  • Chuao Chocolatier (pronounced chew-WOW) is the first Venezuelan Chocolatier based in the United States and Southern California's premier artisan chocolatier.

Co-founded in 2002 by Master Chef Michael Antonorsi and his brother Richard, Chuao Chocolatier is on a mission to share joy with the world through deliciously engaging chocolate experiences.

The Venezuelan brothers, now San Diego residents, named the company Chuao Chocolatier after the legendary cacao-producing region of Chuao (pronounced chew-WOW) located in central Venezuela. The Antonorsi's decision was a reflection of their commitment to both high quality and their Venezuelan family heritage. Chocolate is part their roots; their ancestors ran a small family farm that was once an important part of the criollo cacao plantation industry.

Initially, the company started with a single boutique in Encinitas, CA featuring a one-of-a-kind confectionary menu of chocolate bars, bonbons, truffles and drinking chocolate. Their signature flavor was Spicy Maya, a modern twist on the Mayan's ancient drinking chocolate recipe, infused with cinnamon, pasilla chile and cayenne pepper. The Spicy Maya flavor has since extended across all of Chuao's product lines.

Creative flavor combinations are at the heart of Chuao Chocolatier's decadent chocolate experience including: Firecracker, a chipotle caramel fudge truffle with popping candy, a hint of salt, and dark chocolate and Pan Con Chocolate, a dark chocolate bonbon filled with toasted Panko bread crumbs, olive oil ganache with a touch of sea salt.

"Creative flavor combinations are at the heart of Chuao Chocolatier's decadent chocolate experience…"

Chuao Chocolatier has expanded the menu to include numerous drinking chocolate and espresso beverages, gelatos and seasonal creations. They now own and operate three chocolate cafes in San Diego county.

Today, you can discover Chuao Chocolatier across the United States at fine specialty retailers including Cost Plus World Market, Whole Foods, Target and CVS, as well as fine restaurants & hotels including Omni Hotels and W Hotels nationwide.
