J. R. NIckolai is an absolute Master at cutting hair, in the old-fashioned dictionary meaning of the word -- ""Artist of superb skill and experience."" I think he's world-class. Pros: Haircut, color, and service were superb. Cons: The young always need practice listening, but on the other hand, no doubt I wasn't exactly crystal clear, myself. more

JR Nicholai is an experienced and current hair stylist. He recently corrected a bad mistake in my hair coloring made by someone else. It took 4 different procedures and it turned out great! I liked going to a salon and being attended to by the owner. My hair is long and with only a small trim, he made it look and feel like a completely new style. I watched him cut the hair of a young man who came in with an ordinary hair cut and who left looking very trendy. The salon is clean and peaceful. I wouldn't go anyplace else. JR does color that is natural that leaves the hair soft and manageable. The hair color and cut are lasting and easy to maintain. The products sold are easy to use and keeps the hair in excellent condition. Pros: Color, styling and parking more

Web Site and salon didn't match. Salon was dirty and hair color was a nightmare! Don't recommend .I could have done the same damage with a box of color, and paid 200 $ less. more

I moved to Santa Barbara from the east coast 3 years ago. I couldn't find a hair stylist I liked for the first year, but as a woman in her early 60's, I figured I was the problem and not the stylist. Then I went to Beauty by Design. Wow! J.R. Nickolai literally transformed my appearance, beginning with his impeccable eye for just the right hair style and color (my blonde hair actually looks natural again), and proceeding to a change in makeup and his own line of amazing anti-aging skin products. I look so much younger that people honestly don't believe my age. I had no trouble at all landing a new job. J.R. is an absolute professional who has never once disappointed me in 2 years. I can trust him to just ""do something new"" when I'm feeling like a change, and he keeps coming up with great new looks. And his customer service is so exceptional that I always feel like I'm his only client. There's never a rush, he's always willing to listen to what I'd like to try, and he advises me with competence and expertise that are obviously genuine. I have been to dozens of salons and never to one so great as J R Nickolai. The service I received was incredibly personalized and the best I have ever gotten any where. He cut and colored my hair exactly how I wanted it. Some salons do what they want and don't listen to what their client likes. J R Nickolai is nothing like these salons and listens to their clients and is extremely personalized. Greatest service I have gotten at any salon by far!!! more

I had been going to a hair stylist for 8 years before going to JR Nickolai. You know you build trust with your stylist and when you find a good one you don?t want to change. How I met JR? Well, I started treating myself to facial treatments at Beauty by Design and I just loved them and the results. After the treatments I would have girlfriends and people I hadn?t seen for awhile stop and ask me?.. ?WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOUR SKIN, IT LOOKS SOOO BEAUTIFUL?. I knew then that the facial treatments were working. I could see the results but more importantly everyone else was too. I constantly get complements on my beautiful skin, and I tell them about the fabulous work that JR Nickolai does. He is a perfectionist and you get perfection in your results. People think I?m in my late 30?s early 40?s. And I love that! Since I was getting such fantastic results with my skin treatments I decided to take a leap of faith and I ask JR Nickolai to schedule me for a hair cut. After the wonderful results I was getting from the facial treatments and the professionalism and talent I saw that JR Nickolai was providing me I wanted to have him cut my hair. I was so amazed after the first cut! I could not believe how alive my hair looked and felt. It had so my volume and the way it moved, I just couldn?t believe that I could get such drastic results from a hair cut. I am visiting from Connecticut and just had a great haircut and wonderful experience at J.R. Nickolai's hair salon. I hope to be back in beautiful Santa Barbara again in six weeks, if only to get another haircut in his salon. I gave him no instructions on how to highlight or cut my hair. I love JR Nickolai Beauty By Design Center! J R does not just cut hair he shapes it. He is an artist and is amazing at what he does. I am 34 years old and have been coming here for 18 years! When I get my hair styled by J R it will look just as good 6 months down the road! I love that. My hair colour never leaves a line when it grows out and never fades away to look dull or drab. It can be 5 months after I get my hair done and I still get complaiments from people about my hair. J R is a joy to be around and always has some sort of advice to save me from looking my age or even worse looking older than I am! I am always telling people about J R and recommending him as the best of the best. I get great service here and always leave with a smile on my face. You get one on one treatment with J R which is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of some of the salons out there. I would never let any other person touch my hair! Never.
