Absolutely horrible experience. I've been going to this place for years, both locations. This year was the worst yet. The food was fair at best. Our steaks were done incorrectly, while one other dish was cold. We waited for 15 minutes for our drinks, incorrect wine glasses were brought out and then we had to wait another 10 minutes for an additional mistake. We politely complained to the waitress and later on the owner came over and immediately trivialized our complaints. Her "take it or leave it" attitude was insulting beyond belief. Another waiter came over and said that our complaints were not really serious. Lastly, we received inaccurate information and a real song and dance about our split bills as it related to the tip. Without question, there was an attempt to sell us a bill of goods that the breakdown between the bill and the tip was not actually the tip but the way they had to break it down as they couldn't correctly give a net bill -- confused? So were we. An 18% tip was already included on our $600 bill!!! I will never go back here again. Is it dumb to love a restaurant for its bathrooms? This place has johns that are as immaculate and well-thought out as everything else about the place. They are spotless and spacious, and filled with art and flowers. The hand towels feel like real cloth (they are paper, but really thick and soft) and there is a lavender lotion in there made by a local company that smells great. We were driving to Montreal and saw the sign on I-87 and stopped, even though we had our toddler with us. Although the place was busy, we were greeted at the door by the wife of the couple that owns the place, who found us a charming corner booth. She brought out some strawberries and crackers to occupy our daughter while we perused the menu. The tablecloth and napkins were linen, the lighting soft and glowing and our wine was served in Riedel crystal. We were awed by the huge wine list, but the owner helped us choose something that was perfect. She even let us taste several wines because we were having a hard time describing what we like. The food was sheer heaven with sauces so perfectly balanced it was almost impossible to detect the individual ingredients. (Their menu even lists the local farms they use.) I wrote the original Citysearch review, and revisited last night to see how the place is faring after some personnel changes. It's like settling back in an easy chair. You're so well looked-after and fed such amazing food that it feels like it ought to be illegal. The wild mushrooms appetizer is a blast of buttery flavors; the vegetable strata is a virtuoso construction of chef Tonya Mahar, who ought to have her own TV show. And the Canadian bison could steer you away from beef once and for all. Dining doesn't get much better. -- B. A. Nilsson more
