Best

Always enjoy eating here. Usually have the mushroom or smoked salmon pizza, or the multi-vegetabled (asparagus, fennel etc) chopped salad at lunch. Particularly like the half-ch...

Worst

I am usually of the opinion that if you don't have anything good to say then don't say anything at all..but this is certainly not the case with Cheebo.\r \r I hate to say but I ...

Wow, they're losing what they once had 6/8/2007

This place used to be one of my favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fresh, great selection, just an awesome place. Then I went there for breakfast the other day and was just really disappointed. The majority of the egg dishes say ""your choice of filling."" Except there is no listing anywhere for what those fillings are. When I asked the waiter if he had a list, he said no, and then proceeded to rattle off 10 or 15 fillings you could choose from. Come on, people. If you're going to offer a wide selection - which is a GREAT thing - then list what you have to choose from. This is the kind of cooler-than-thou institutional attitude that makes a great place a LOSER place. If you offer many ways to have breakfast then don't make it some kind of in-the-know thing of what the hell kind of breakfast you can get. Stop trying to be so freaking cool. You're not.\r \r Add to that the fact that when I asked a waiter if they had anything to balance my wobbly table he sort of moved in an inch or so for me to an equally wobbly spot, and only came over once I got down on the ground myself to try and shove some sugar packets under it. He kind of stood there and watched me do it. Totally unhelpful. \r \r I'm sure these could be seen as minor gripes, but I'm seeing it as indicative of where it's going. I've seen it many times in LA, and Cheebo had best right the ship and get themselves back on track with the kind of place they used to be or this place has a real chance of just sinking. And I hope they do, cause it used to be a solid, solid restaurant. more

""Cheapo"" Portions at Cheebo 5/27/2007

Two of us ordered spinach salads today, and we were very surprised at how small they were and how little there was in the salads except spinach. There was hardly any taste to the dressing--I could have done better at home myself, and I'm not all that great of a cook. And for an entree sized salad, at least that's what I understood it to be, it was really, really small. Our portions were really dinner sized, in my opinion, and not at all worthy of the $13 or $14 cost. I've had a few ""so so"" meals at Cheebo, and this one was the most forgetable and most mediocre. There are better places to eat for the same money. Pros: Colorful decor Cons: Colorless cuisine more

Avoid At All Costs 2/19/2007

Cheebo is disgusting! I went there on a recommendation from a friend. I ordered the cheebo chop salad. I ate half of the salad when, to my horror, I discovered some curly hairs in my salad! The manager gave me some flimsy excuse and gave me the meal for free. However, I had lost my appetite. I wouldn't eat there again if my life depended on it. Pros: doors are easy for escape Cons: terrible service, food more

Pricey and Lethargic Waitress 1/17/2007

I was pretty excited to go to this restaurant based on a review I had read over a year before. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre, and the service was lethargic. My party ordered a variety of dishes - smoked salmon pizza, cheebread, soup, and a few sandwhiches. Nothing was sorely disappointing, but nothing stood out, either. It was the type of meal that will be forgotten within the month. In fact, I think I've had more satisfying meals at Pizza Hut. But this was not the most disappointing part - service from our waitress was almost nonexistent. The supporting waitstaff/busboys were fantastic - they refilled our water, cleared plates, etc., but our waitress was just awful. She took about 15 minutes to acknowledge our table when we arrived and then another 20 minutes to take our order - she never even passed by our table in between for us to flag her down. Then, as she took our order she was of no help - my friend asked her about the soup size - whether she thought it could be a full meal or more of an appetizer. Her response? ""It's soup."" She was such a deadbeat - very lethargic. There is nonintrusive service and then there is service where you feel like you are a bother to ask for anything. We received the latter. After we finally received our food (another 25 minutes - and note that there were two other couples in the whole restaurant), she never came back to check on us once. In fact, we never saw her again until she brought us the bill. Pros: Atmosphere was nice - the music and lighting were very calming Cons: Disappointing service and mediocre food more

Blech....Avoid! 12/10/2006

While I give Cheebo props for its inspired, offbeat (and orange) decor, not much else was worth revisiting here. They severly undercooked one friend's meal, which messed things up a bit. Also, when I went to use the restroom (which is right next to the kitchen) I saw two employees scarfing food, one from a takeout box, the other from what appeared to be a serving plate. Hurl. It made me nauseous. And jealous (Imagine that combo) b/c I hadn't eaten yet. When the food did come, everyone thought it was just okay and my steak and mash was lukewarm. Blech.\r \r To be fair, the waitress was competent and charming. And I didn't try the Italian offerings... Nonetheless, not going back if I can help it. Pros: Decor Cons: Sanitation, Meat dishes, etc. more

Great Service, Great Food 11/24/2006

It's nice that more people don't know about this place. Breakfasts are scrumptious, and unlike the insanely-busy-all-the-time Griddle Cafe nearby, you don't have to fight for your server's attention. more

fresh and fantastic 11/20/2006

cheebo is just a few blocks away from my place, and i have never had a bad meal there. bossa nova is nearby and good for those greasy days that i want huge portions, but cheebo is what i crave when i want excellent healthy food for a great price. the waitstaff is incredibly friendly and even when they're mobbed, they maintain their cheer and remember the regulars. all of their pastas are to die for. Pros: friendly neighborhood service, food Cons: crowded sometimes -- need reservations during busy hours more

Still a Favorite 11/1/2006

I'm a frequent visitor to Los Angeles and my trips always include delicious meals at Cheebo. My favorite lunch is the Turkeywich which has heaps of turkey along with bacon, tomato and avocado. All the sandwiches are enormous, so I often have to take the 2nd half away with me to eat later in the day. When I think I ought to be eating more vegetables, I order the veg chop salad which has goodies in it like asparagus and fennel. I also often go for their tasty veg soups. Even the chicken soup has lots of veg in it. If I'm in the area at dinner time, I stop by for a glass of wine at the bar and then probably a mushroom or sausage and fennel pizza (perfect thin crust) or a pasta (the simple spaghetti pomodoro is nicely seasoned). The fish special often looks great, although I've never had it because I want to have my pizza. I always feel comfortable at Cheebo. My home away from home. Pros: service, catering Cons: none more

Best pizza for sure! The crust is scrumptuous. On top of that Cheebo's ambiance is very hip. 10/29/2006

I luv this place! I can't tell you how many times a week I think about their pizza. If it wasn't for the fact that I watch my carbohydrate intake I could easily eat their pizza every night of the week. If I have no one to dine with and I have a whole pizza to myself I take the leftovers home and the next day it's even better. Cheebo salads are also primo! Last time I had a huge piece of grilled salmon on top of leafy greens......the fish was cooked to perfection! Ohh and I should also mention that I have seen numerous star there. It's a very casual yet hip and trendy spot - great atmosphere and a good selection of beer. Pros: Ambiance, pizza, salads Cons: You will leave feeling over stuffed more

The un-California Pizza Kitchen (in a good way) 10/25/2006

Sure, you can go to CPK -- but for a real slice of SoCal casual cuisine, go to Cheebo. The pizzas, with their toothsome, rustic crusts and flavorful topping combos (homemade sausage/fennel, wild mushroom and clam/jalapeno are my personal faves) are alone worth the trip (or the trip to the takeout counter to take it home with you). Hand tossed and stretched lengthwise, these long-ish (not roundish) pizzas are always popular picks. The chop salad is killer, and well... i've never gotten around to trying the sandwiches, because I'm always stuck on my faves -- but I'm sure they must be great. Cheebo's creed is to use organic (whenever possible) ingredients, but they do it without being snobby or too earthy-crunchy about it. Meat dishes happily co-exist with vegetarian dishes, so bring your whole crew -- everyone will find something that they want to eat. For me, Cheebo is the happy medium of dining out in LA: not too fancy, not too grungy, high-quality, tasty food for a good price, casual/hip decor without the snobby staff or intolerable wait. It's my go-to spot whenever I want to treat myself (or my out-of-town guests) to something nicer than an In 'N Out, but don't want to go to a McMacaroniGrill or a nosebleed pricey place. I only wish there was one in the Valley or in Silverlake. Pros: Tasty food, reasonable prices, hip but not snobby Cons: Beware the daily specials -- some can be much pricier than the usual menu more
