Best

One of Portland's best. The type of place you will never be disappointed in the food. The cocktails were also perfect, my only complaint is that with the great food, and great win...

A perfect secret 6/28/2004

Who would guess that this little jewel could be found in the warehouse area of Northwest. After ciricling around machine shops, we came upon The Carlyle after hearing the buzz from some friends. As we began dinner, we realized the buzz was well-deserved. The Sea Bass was excellent and the food was so beautifully presented that it seemed like sacrilige to put a fork to it. The infusioni cocktails at the bar are insanely delicious. The restaurant itself is small with a real smart clientele of all types. We will be back! Pros: cute staff, great food, a great secret more

A big disappointment 6/19/2004

I had heared some talk about this restaurant and I decided to take me wife for hear birthday last month. We had the worst dining experience every. The kitchen had forgot to put some of the items in are first course. Then both are entrees were wrong and cooled. The pork chop was rare and the rib eye was well done. It took over an hour to get are dinner and they offered a free dessert. Well that took about forty-five minutes to receive. There a lot of good restaurants in Portland and the bottom line is Carlyle is not one of them!!!! Cons: , food, food more

Class Act 5/23/2004

Kudos to Carlyle! A highly satisfying evening for myself, my wife, and two very particular out-of-town guests. Exceptional martinis followed by thier house salad and an excellent steak. High praise also goes to the Sea Bass and the Lamb tenderloin. The wine list was on the small side, but the waiter's suggestion was enjoyed by all. The manager (owner?) made a point of stopping by our table which was greatly appreciated. Uncommon touches make this place a stand out. We plan to return soon. Pros: very good food, welcoming atmosphere, perfect Martini Cons: , tables a bit crowded more

My kinda place! 5/10/2004

Love the bar. awesome drink menu. ate too many olives though. ha! Dinner was excellent, had to wait for our table though..no big deal (see above). Tried the special on waiters recommendation. Sweet pea and serrano ham ravioli..amazing! Our waiter was first class all the way. We went back to the bar after dinner for coffee drinks and dessert. Try thier version of spanish coffee..good stuff. We will definately be back Pros: excellent food, fun bar, excellent service more

Pleasantly surprised 5/7/2004

My husband and I, for whatever reason, always get stuck at the worst tables at hip restaurants and usually get crappy service. We were both pleasantly surprised by our experience at Carlyle...our waiter was very attentive and had excellent recommendations for wine and food. We both liked our entrees and loved the creme fraiche cheesecake. more

To dine or not to dine? 2/23/2004

An extremely small restaurant with nice decor, high ceilings, in an industrial area. It has good menu choices and most of the items prepared had good flavors. The service was friendly, somewhat slow and not overly attentive, it could be a result of too few servers and bartenders, or too little experience. The white wine was overly chilled and many of the patrons filled their own glasses from bottles left on the table. Dinner for two was roughly $120. Pros: Great bartender, Good parking, Candle light Cons: , Expensive, ?? Value more

Definetely Worth a Try 2/15/2004

I recently ate at the Carlyle with my wife and another couple for Valentine's Day. The dimlit lights and candlelit tables make the atmosphere enjoyable and soothing. The service is great. I don't know if it was because it was V-Day or not, but the selection on the menu was somewhat small. But none the less the lamb shank I ordered was excellent. Surprisingly a dinner for two with tips and drinks came to well under a $100. The Raspberry Limeanade is a must have drink. Pros: atmosphere, value more

Somewhat of a disappointment! 2/13/2004

Reserv. a month in adv., rec'd the worst table, just inside the door; surprised we were not forewarned. Tables were in tight proximity to one another. Steer clear of the butter lettuce salad with blue cheese crumbles & vinaigrette dressing, left unpleasant flavor in ones mouth. The foie gras & the vegetable hash were tasty as a second course. The sea bass entree melted in your mouth. The pork chop was somewhat fatty, flat, and not appealing. The coffee was served at room temp. yet was replaced with a hot cup when requested. Meager wine list is better to avoid, a full bar is available. Is it truly advisable for a restaurant to oversell by adding too many tables to earn a few more $$ rather than to maintain a comfortable # which is more easily accommodated. Opened June 2003, needs a little more time to age. Pros: good entre, friendly service, easy street parking Cons: , Poor Accoustics, too many tables more

Hidden little Secret 11/15/2003

Carlyle has it all. From the moment I entered Carlyle until the close of the evening I was enchanted by their warm welcome, fabulous martinis, great food, and the cozy after dinner cocktail. Thank you! I never would have expected to find such a place on 17th & Thurman. It is on the expensive side, but very worthwhile. I enjoyed the Grilled Halibut special that had a Red Wine Reduction sauce. Very deep tasting. This was a good-sized portion which included polenta and portabello mushrooms. To top off the evening the bartender, Greg, recommended the Tijuana Speedball. The name sounded like it came out of the movie ""Blow""; this was a top notch cocktail. It is a tasty surprise. Get one! It is a Bailey's -ish treat. Keep up the good work. Pros: good parking for NW, friendly staff, consistency Cons: Expensive more

Highly recommend. 11/12/2003

Great restaurant, great atmosphere. The food was excellent, the waitstaff friendly, but a little slow. Went for lunch - perfect light lunch menu. I would most definitely recommend to friends. Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Value more

love it 11/8/2003

What a wonderful find in an easy to get to, but off the beaten track location. Every time we go, there are fun and interesting people and the food is unbeatable. Not to mention that the owner, Bruce Goldburg is a very nice man. Pros: great food, lots of parking, great ambiance more

A Wonderful Place! 10/5/2003

I have now been to the Carlyle several times for dinner and all I can say is that it is a wonderful dining experience! The service, food and atmosphere is great. The Carlyle is fine addition to Northwest Portland and I highly recommend it. Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Great Value more

good food bad service 9/23/2003

We thought the food was great. However, the neighboring table returned their appetizers after a couple of bites. I would recommend eating here after a couple of weeks or months when they work out service problems. We, as well as the two tables next to us, had empty water glasses for most of the dinner. It seemed we had to wave down the waiter whenever we wanted more food or drinks. Very frustrating experience. The corkage fee was $20! Given that their wine list is minimal we thought the fee a bit high. The couple next to us couldn't believe it especially when the waiter broke the cork in their bottle and still charged for the corkage fee. Pros: food, ambiance, variety Cons: service, corkage fee of $20, service more

Give Carlyle a try 9/18/2003

We've had two very good experiences so far. First, we stopped by for cocktails and appetizers. The bartending was excellent...particularly in a town where a good martini can be hard to find. The appetizers were good and convinced us to return for dinner. We went to dinner late on a busy Saturday without reservations. They graciously worked us in. Even when our entrees took a bit long, they more than made it up to us. I would recommend this restaurant. Pros: bartending, easy to park more
