Captain Hiram's Resort

i'm from orlando but go to melbourne every year for a week vacation. I heard from the locals that capt hirams was ""slipping"" and i wish i would have listened. VERY bad food! I ordered a dozen steamed oysters ($15.99) I tried the 1st one and it had slivers of shell all through it! I have had oysters many times and know they can have sand in them which is fine but these had sharp pieces of shell all through them! i sent them back and the waitress (which handled things fine) took them off the tab. when she returned she stated the reason shells were all through my food was because they had bought a shucking machine and agreed how bad they were. I had a party of 6, four adults and my 2 children (it was my father in laws 60th birthday) when the tab came out they had added 18% gratuity!!! I mean how disrespectful is that? after I didn't even get to eat my dinner? UNREAL! I use to be a bartender and always tip 20% but was disgusted they were telling me how much to tip with a party of 4 adults and 2 kids! I complained to the manager he just shrugged his shoulders and acted like he could care less and said it's company policy to add 18% to a party of 6 then went back to playing with a TV trying to change the channel. UNREAL! We had plans to hit the sandbar and run up a bar tab that would have blown away or meal tab. But after being disrespected like that I refused to spend another dime there! Also my mother in law had the tuna sandwich and spent the rest of her night (her husbands 60th birthday) in the bathroom with an upset stomach! DO NOT EAT HERE! They do not care about customers! more

I've been here several times over the last 12 or so years. My mom lives nearby and every time I visit her, at some point we end up at Capt Hirams. It's a fun place - they have a ""sand bar"", live music, good food and good service, indoor and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is casual and beachy with a wonderful ""river"" (Inter-Coastal Waterway) view. Good for families as well as singles and couples. It's a good, all-around place. Loved by locals and visitors. Pros: Atmosphere, food, service, music. Cons: Parking - but it's getting better. more

I hadn't been to Captain Hirams in about a year, the sand bar addition was awesome! Live music, all ages, happy hour, great food and good service. Great for out of town guests! Pros: Sand Bar, Live Music, On the River Cons: Service not the best more
