Great photo collection 5/24/2009

This is the kind of place I appreciate because you can tell a lot of love went into putting this museum together. The photos of old men working the whale ships or women coming in on the immigrations boats and children on Cape Cod were very cool. Also, some beautiful recent color photography. more

Whales, Cranberries & Morna 5/7/2009

As a Cape Verdean American, I loved this museum. It brings together so many elements of our culture and presents it beautifully. The space is small, but there is a lot to keep you there. For those of you who don't know, Cape Verde is an island nation of the coast of West Africa. it was once a Portuguese colony. Many Cape Verdeans are mixed African-Portuguese and they migrated here to work in whaling or on the cranberry bogs of Cape Cod in the 19th century and later because such a large community was already here in New England (Boston, Fox Point, New Bedford, Wareham and East Providence). This museum shows you the history of the immigration- aboard old yachts and whaling ships, as well as the trades of the people once they arrived. And there are sections on art, music and sports. They also have a very nice library and the staff there are incredibly helpful about looking up family names or history. more
