Served up a good lunch 1/11/2010

Yep, its pricey for Mexican food, so don't go if that is an issue. If not, then go. The gucamole was made to order and was exceptionally good. Everybody seems to agree on the salsa's . I preferred the warm one over the cold. The rice was good, not great, the enchilada in poblano sauce was really good, though it could of had more spice on it for my liking. The tortilla soup was very flavorful, but the chicken may have come from a can. They did serve me a beer in a can and I had to ask for a glass, but the service was very attentive. All in all it was a good lunch. Pros: Excellent table side gucamole Cons: Beer in a can? more

Pretty good food, delicious salsas 7/23/2009

We happened into Cantina Laredo on Sunday evening, after hearing about it around town. The bar area was beautiful and the waitress/bartender and host were very nice. Pros: Warm and cold salsas, crisp chips Cons: Food and margaritas are overpriced more

Best Salsa 1/9/2009

My husband and I have lived on the north side of Austin for 2 years now and we looked for months before we were able to find a Mexican restaurant in this town with a lot of flavor and spice. We eventually found Cantina Laredo and now it's our favorite Mexican restaurant ever! It's well worth the drive into downtown. There may not be a place to park for free during the day, but on evenings (after 5:30) and weekends, you can usually find a metered spot (which are free during those times). Their warm salsa has a unique, smokey flavor, but it still has a spicy-ness that goes well with Mexican food. If you like a more traditional salsa, you may prefer their cold salsa. Both are brought to the table, but we usually ask if we can get some of the warm salsa to go. We haven't tried their guacamole yet, but we've seen others have it prepared at their table and it looks good! The portions are large and I'd recommend the quesadillas (on the appetizer menu), any of their salads, or the fajitas (my favorite). Their rice is a little bland, but it doesn't taste loaded down with butter like some restaurants. I also love their sizzling apple pie/ice cream. Try it out for yourself! Pros: Excellent Chips & Salsa, entrees, and desserts Cons: Parking, and it's a little pricey for Mexican food (but worth it!) more

authentic mexican restaurant in classy and welcoming environment 10/3/2008

This is by far my favorite authentic mexican restaurant in Austin. Whenever I have family or friends in town I always bring them to this restaurant. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that have amazing homemade salsa. They also will prepare guacamole right at your table to your liking. I would definitely recommend the carne asada! That's my all time favorite dish that keeps on bringing me back for more. Pros: tasty salsa, wonderful food, great service, fun happy hour, clean and classy, beautiful bar area Cons: parking more

Best mexican food in Austin by far. 6/4/2008

Cantina Laredo is an awesome place for dinner or for happy hour with friends. The ceviche is the best I""ve ever had and the margaritas are to die for. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a great environment with awesome food and service. more

Great Food - Great Customer Service 4/28/2008

After reading the other reviews, it's sad that others have had some bad experiences at Cantina Laredo, but I must write about our experience yesterday evening (Sunday). We arrived about 6 or 6:30'ish, and were seated immediately. Our server (whose name I forgot) was outstanding. I eat plant-based food only (no meat whatsoever, no dairy, and no eggs), so I inquired about what might be best to order and asked if the Enchiladas Veracruz could be served without the chicken or the cheeses. Our server enthusiastically volunteered to ask the chef, and turns out it was no problem, so I ordered it. I have to tell you it was one of the best Mexican food plates I have ever had, and the tableside-made guacamole was outstanding. My husband ordered the Carne Asada, and he said it was very good. In addition, my Silver Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon was excellent. We had a great time and a great meal. My thanks and compliments to the chef who tailored my entree to my dietary requirements, our excellent server, and the Cantina Laredo restaurant in general. We will definitely be back! Pros: Individualized service, excellent food, nice ambiance Cons: Parking? more

Not worth it 10/11/2007

I have eaten at Cantina Laredo three times now and have yet to find a dish that is worth eating. It is overpriced for no reason and if you're looking for Tex-Mex you will find this place unsatisfying. I know there are people that like it, but to me much of the food lacks the flavor and spices you expect when dinging at a Mexican food restaurant. On a good note, the service is always excellent. Pros: Great service Cons: Overpriced and bland food more

Delicious Brownie Goodness 9/14/2007

The entrees are a bit pricey, but of quite good quality, if not something to write home about. The freshly made table-side quacamole is wonderful in that you can spice it (or un-spice it) however you like. But my very favorite thing about Cantina Laredo is the Mexican Brownie -- a huge pecan brownie brought to your table on a platter sizzling with melting Mexican Brandy Butter and topped with a huge scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. It is decadent and delicious and worth the trip. Pros: the Mexican Brownie Cons: parking more

Great food, great atmosphere 8/1/2007

I wasn't sure I wanted to go downtown, but I'm glad we did. The place was really nice and the food was excellent. I especially recommend the enchiladas veracruz and the top shelf guacamole. It's made at your table and it was the best guacamole I've had in a long time. They also had great margaritas and two different salsas at the table. Everyone was really friendly and we had a great time. I'll definitely recommend it to friends. Pros: Ambience, great food Cons: parking more

Can't stop myself. 7/28/2007

I go every week. I work and live downtown and find the people to be so much more attentive than most downtown restaurants. The two salsa are a unique touch. One is served hot and one is served cold, but both are wonderful. I usually order the brisket tacos, but I havn't found anything I didn't like. I'll go again next week. Much better than most mexican food restaturants in Austin. more

EXCELLENT PEOPLE, EXEPTIONAL FOOD!!!!!! 6/18/2007

I went to Cantina Laredo two days ago on Saturday... It was the best experience in a while... Our waiter was ultra nice and really good at answering all my questions... He was awesome... It all stared with the welcoming environment and a great warm welcome from the hostess she kindly took us to a great cozy booth and told us about the Top Shelf Guac made table side... We couldn't turn that down... I had the shrimp flautas which was ultra tasty and delicious... I just say give it a shot and you'll love it... Pros: Nice people great food Cons: Parking can be tough but its worth it... more

Much better than people are saying, give it a chance on an off day 6/12/2007

Went on a Monday night and no one was there. The guacamole is amazing, the beef fajitas are marinated so well, the margaritas are great, tortialla soup is some of the best I have had and the Camaron Poblano Asada was also really good but a bit heavy for me. Tequila flight with three premium tequilas was only 20 bucks! All is all I was pleasantly surprised. Pros: Food, our waiter, creativity with the menu Cons: its downtown, salads are kinda weak more

So bad we never even sat down! 4/30/2007

I have to say Catina Laredo is the WORST RUN RESTURANT IN AUSTIN. I wish I could tell you about the food, but the service was so bad we never even got a table. We came in on a quite Sunday evening around 6. I would hate to see this place if it was actually busy. When we arrived there were literally nine empty tables that we could see from the door, all with dirty dishes, but we were assured by the host it take just a minute to clean one off. After at least 10 minutes of watching the host get a drink, chat with the wait staff, and generally wonder around, he finally returned to the host stand to tell us they now had a 20-30 minute wait. Never mind no one had even cleaned a single table in 15 minutes. While we were waiting a party came in from the patio and told the bar tender that they had been waiting outside for half an hour and never saw a waiter. The bus boy brought them drinks, but no one had even been to there table. At least one other party walked out during this time, and I would suspect several more followed. The staff wasn't rude, but they were completely INCOMPTENT. Don't waste your time; there are so many other great TexMex restaurants in Austin. I won't make the mistake of going here again. If you want to try it I would hurry because I expect they will be out of business soon. Pros: Wish I knew. Couldn't get past the service. Cons: WORST SERVICE IN AUSTIN more

Bad food, bad service 12/26/2006

There are many great mexican restaurants in Austin and this is not one of them. If you are in a hurry no need to read the rest of this review. The service was absolutely the laziest I have ever seen in Austin. The server was annoyed to explain anything to us about the menu. The server pushed us through the dinner. The appetizer was quickly followed by our entree and the check was put on the table just after we started our entree. My entree was taco's on corn tortilla's which was served with flour tortilla's. The server started to argue that I ordered incorrectly, but fixxed the meal. By observing the other diners experience, the goal was to move people through the restaurant on a time schedule. The food was pricey and tasted was if came from a corporate kitchen then reheated. Cons: People working in the restaurant would rather be somewhere else more

Best Tortilla Soup in Austin 10/24/2006

I can't comment on any other menu item, because, well I ALWAYS get the soup. On my first visit I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered a cup of tortilla soup. When it came out I told the waiter there was a mistake, I ordered a cup not a bowl. He assured me the trough before me was the cup. It was delicious! I now crave it and try my best to eat it once a week. more

Mexican food, atmosphere was nice but the food was bad 10/18/2006

The food wasn't seasoned enough, and tasted like was made from a can with all the tomato sauce. The music was nice and place was clean but I wouldn't recommend there food. Pros: The place was clean, the music was nice Cons: The food was bad it made me sick more

good food, good location 10/8/2006

fun restaurant. we watched the downtown criteriums while eating on the street corner. Couldn't have been more like europe! this place had very good service from the time we entered to the time we left. Enchiladas were great! Tortilla Chips were fresh, not stale. I did like the two salsas, one tasted like toasted chiles/chipotles and the other was a more typical tomato flavored picante. Queso was a perfect appetizer. The bill was a little pricey, so I'd give it more dollar signs. Don't think the margaritas were worth the price, but the enchiladas were. Pros: good enchiladas Cons: Bring your pocketbook more

good food 9/10/2006

We had dinner here tonight and it was wonderful. The margaheritas were perfect. We will be back here for sure. Pros: food more
