Where else can you ride a train car while it sits in an air conditioned building. And the kids will love climbing in and out of the old train cars that they have seen in western movies. Great place to spend the day. Pros: Kid friendly, Good value Cons: Parking not good more

Huge, majestic, awesome 6/3/2002

The California State Railroad Museum is quite possibly the world's best and most impressive railroad museum. Ogle the massive and gleaming locomotives here, and don't miss the free guided tour explaining the Western (Central Pacific RR) portion of Transcontinental Railroad. The only other train museum on the planet that can compete with CSRM is the National Railway Museum in York, England. This collection is a national treasure. Pros: Amazing collection, Great tour guides, Cheap: Adults only $3 more

Editorial
  • The History
The railroad's legacy is shown in a romantic light, so the ruthlessness of the Big Four and the exploitation of Chinese laborers aren't exactly topic A, but neither are they ignored. It's a mecca for elementary schools and families on outings, so be prepared. The railroad buffs who also spend time here are decidedly less of a distraction to the casual attendee.

    Features

Twenty-one beautifully restored locomotives and cars from from the 1860s to the 1960s tell the story of how rail travel transformed American society, particularly in the West. Inside the building, the displays are well done, but what's outside the museum is just as interesting. The passenger station has been restored, complete with baggage claim and separate waiting areas for men versus women and children (to spare them the evils of tobacco and swearing that the men indulged in).
