California Roll & Sushi

Went there on the way to see a movie in the same mall. We were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. My spouse doesn't eat sushi and enjoyed the teriyaki chicken meal for $12 total - it came with tempura that was good too). I had a sushi dinner special for $17 and was happy with the quality and portion size of the fish. I saw that other reviewers on these pages had poor service and while our server was not the warm friendly or even smiling type - we were happy with the meal, didn't have to wait to sit down (on a Saturday night) and will go back if we are back at the mall. A group of us walk to California Roll-Sushi for lunch since it is near our offices. Over a course of several months, we have experienced terrible service. Every time we place an order to go, it is never ready when we pick it up. The waitresses cannot seem to get it right even though our order is always the same. We also found a DEAD FLY in one of the bento boxes. Furthermore, they nickel and dime you for rooster sauce ? who charges for rooster sauce? We were never charged this before whether we dined in or ordered to go. There is no consistency as to what they do and do not charge for. In addition, they enforced two different credit card minimums on us ? $5 and $8. Which one is it? Pros: The location is near out offices. Cons: Worst service for returning customer. more

Being that it was the only sushi place open for lunch on a Saturday (besides the overly-crowded Topanga Mall restaurant) we ventured to try it. Boy was I amazed. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Sashimi and it was amazing. The yellowtail sashimi was fresh and in large cuts. The seaweed salad was huge! The main waitress was so sweet and accomodating but unfortunately we also had a ""waitress in training"" actually waiting on us and she sucked. Overall, a great meal and will definately go back. I ate at CA roll and sushi twice while staying across the street at the marriot. The first time I went I ordered a salmon tempura roll, ca roll and some inari. The ca roll was subpar, as was the inari, but, the salmon tempura roll was very good. The next time I ordered the 8 piece sushi combo with spicy tuna roll. The roll again was subpar in my opinion. The sushi was decent, very generous servings, and a good selection. Price is not too bad, $12 for a 8 piece combo with a spicy tuna roll. If your already in the mall, its worth a try. Pros: Good servings size Cons: CA and Spicy tuna rolls average at best. more
