Best

My mom was in town recently and she and her friends wanted to eat on the water somewhere. Randomly chose this restaurant because they were doing DINE LA. Thank god I found it! ...

Worst

Last Saturday my husband and I went to Caf? Del Rey (CDL) for the first time. We are both foodies, and make a habit of trying different restaurants. Pros: The view Cons: ...

A TOUGH ONE TO CALL 3/2/2007

I can't say the food is anything more than OK. It's NOTHING to return for. But the place does have a charm and a nice view of the marina. more

Solid. 2/16/2007

I've been to Cafe Del Rey twice now, and both trips have proved worthwhile. While the sushi menu leaves something to be desired (uninventive, but still very tasty), both the seafood and landmeat (coining a new foodie word there) entrees were well balanced and delicious. Striped bass was seared with just the right amount of spices outside while remaining tender and meaty within. On a prior trip I ate the boar bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and it was out of sight. Pros: Great food, ambience, friendly staff, good wine list Cons: Somewhat out of the way more

Amazing Sunday brunch 11/12/2006

The view of the marina and the elegant atmosphere complement the upscale brunch menu perfectly. This is not your average pancakes and omelets brunch fare, this is gourmet cuisine and it is to die for. Pros: food, ambience Cons: kind of pricey, necessary valet parking more

FANTASTIC ROMATIC HIGH END MARINA RESTAURANT! 10/30/2006

When you want to spend the money on a really nice high end place, this is i! ABOVE AVERAGE EVERYTHING! Excellent service, Great Food, Nice atmosphere! I would compare to Geoffrey's in MAlibu! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Pros: VERY HIGH END DELICIOUS FOOD GREAT SERVICE!! Cons: none! more

Why the harsh reviews? 7/23/2006

Had Saturday brunch with a bunch of girlfriends recently and actually enjoyed our meal. The servers were great, except for the hostess, who looked like she had better things to do. We all decided to get the prix fixe 3 course brunch, which at $28, turned out to be a really good deal. I had the smoked salmon tartlet to start, with a main course of seared ahi tuna chirashi with ikura, and banana fritters for dessert (plus a glass of mimosa). They were all good, only that the chirashi was a little too salty and the banana fritters weren't as sweet as I expected. The view is gorgeous, though. Pros: ocean view, good prix-fixe Cons: hostess more

Weak Service, Average Food 6/8/2006

Great Location squandered with poor service and average food. Will not be returning until the restaurant goes through a renovation from top to bottom. more

Disappointing on Service 6/4/2006

The title says it all. My experience would have been a ""10"" had it not been for the disappointing level of service. Too many times, I had to ""call for service."" At these prices (about $120 pp w tip, drinks and dessert), I should not have to ""call for service."" Pros: Ambience, Food, Location Cons: Service, Service, Service more

The Best Marina Food 4/4/2006

This place has absolutely the best food in the Marina, and some of the best in LA. View is wonderful, great brunch, most of the dishes are fantastic, but you can get some that are just average. Try having cocktails and appetizers in the bar area; fireplace, piano, and nice servers. And the patio for private functions is wonderful. Check it out. more

STOP! Don't GO! 2/23/2006

Don't waste your time. Jer'ne at the Ritz is just down the block - better food, better service + much better attitude! Tourist Trap more

Not that great - just very average 8/31/2005

I have been to this place several times over the years - during all their chef changes and I can honestly say - its still average. It tries to be very different and upscale dining but the food is never up to par. I had the maine lobster salad - VERY AVERAGE, not very tasty - even the diner's next to us gave us a kind of yucky expression when they ate their lobster salad. NOT worth the price - $18 for the salad. My main entree was also very average - stay away from the tai snapper - too many bones and not very tasty. The only upside is their dessert - the pear tart was good. Cons: menu, price more

Best desserts 6/26/2005

Always love going to Cafe Del Rey. The food gets better and better. The chef (Frank Fronda) is always consistant and solid. The desserts here are the greatest. Try the cocobanana thing . I just wish they were open for late night eats. Perfect place to have sweets by the fire. more

Cafe del Heaven 6/14/2005

This is LA's best kept secret!!! Greatest inspired fish dishes I have seen and OH MY the Foie Gras, sinfully heaven. Go soon before word gets out, this is an experience. Great brunch too. Pros: food, piano, lounge more

Pleasantly surprised 6/12/2005

Didn't expect too much from them - part of a corporation - and they showed out. The food was fantastic - the server was extremely nice/polished/attentive. Was amazed at the food. I hope they stay on people's radar and do well. Pros: great food, friendly service more

Disappointing 6/9/2005

The service was slow, from the hostess to the waitress. The piano player is a nice touch, but the restaurant is already noisy making it hard to have a conversation. The food presentation is pretty, but the sauces kill the fish flavor. Appetizers & desserts are decent. Good wine selection. Overall, it looks great, but lacks the substance of true fine dining, not worth the prices. Pros: Decor, Presentation Cons: Service, Food, Prices more

My Restaurant 6/7/2005

I eat and entertain at Cafe del Rey quite often and have never been disapointed with my overall experience. The food, service and ambience is some of the best in the city and I eat out 5 - 6 days a week. It's not a great place for small children but an experience for the rest of the family. Pros: Valet Parking, Exstensive Wine List, The Satff Cons: Can get loud more

classy but relaxed setting 4/30/2005

We went here at least 3 or 4 times when we lived by the Marina. The food was always good and the service is great, too. I really like the look and fell of the restaurant. You fell like you are in an upscale place, but it is not in the least uncomfortable. Pros: ambience, service, food Cons: expensive more

Consistently great food, but you pay for it... 4/18/2005

This is a good place to go for consistently great food, especially if someone else is picking up the bill. I've never had a bad meal and have always had guests praise the food. The venison is a favorite, as well as the bacon wrapped filet. Pros: Out-of-towners enjoy, Varied menu, Desserts Cons: Pricey, Expensive wine more

A Great Meal at a Great Restaurant 11/16/2004

The food is delicious. The view is spectacular. The new decor is fabulous. The service outstanding. Pros: food, view, service more

change isn't always good 8/6/2004

I miss the old Cafe Del Rey, the more Japanese fusion inspired cuisine,(not to mention a Japanese chef and sous chef), the adventure of game on the menu, and Great Service. Thank goodness for a busser as we couldn't get refills or coffee etcetera from either the servers or the manager. Tried to send back extremely overcooked food and took 2 tries for attention. Tried twice since the new ownership and won't be back. Pros: Bartenders, Good wine list Cons: , Service, management more

great food... great mood 4/30/2004

my first impression of cafe del rey was completely ruined by the old-school looking sign out in the parking lot. despite that, every aspect w/ this restaurant is wonderful!!! appertizer, entrees, service, and the whole vibe the restaurant has to provide are definitely top-nodge. i will definitely go back w/in the near future. if u're looking for a place to impress someone important, this is definitely the place to be. Pros: food, service, water-view Cons: , a tiny bit overpriced more
