wedding woes 10/20/2010

I had my wedding in the large hall at cafe funchal. Carla, the wedding coordinator was anything but helpful, but I had already booked. she invited us to a taste testing and left the wrong time on the machine... when we got there she said we should have arrived on time when i told her the message had said we could browse the selection andwhere between 1 and 4 she said no i must have misunderstood the selection was at 12. on the day of our rehersal she booked a consultation with another couple so was unable to coordinate my wishes with the staff, my mother and i therefore had to show the staff how we wanted the center pieces, napkins, tables, how many where on each table, how many tables we needed, etc. i had intended on spending the night out with my husbands family that was down from canada for the wedding but got stuck there for over an hour after the rehersal. On the night of the event carla, who was wearing jeans and a tshirt, informed me that she had a poker tournement next door and if I needed anything I should go find her there. I was insulted right off the bat. I had expected a little more direction than that. the servers asked my mother and i if they could begin serving if they could clear the tables etc i didnt expect to have to worry about that on my wedding night i thought i was paying them so i didnt have to worry. they didnt serve icecream with my cake even though i had paid for it in my package and then carla came in and told them to shut the bar down an hour early. when i asked her why she said the dj told her he was only paid until 10... the dj who was my cousin said he had never said that at which point she started screaming at him and calling him a liar in front of everyone. she appoligised while i was on my way out but insisted that it was my cousins fault and told me she would send me a complimentry gift card which neadless to say never came. if i had known i would have paid the couple of extra dollers a plate to go some where else and have a relaxing wedding experiance. i do not intend on returning to the resturant. more

One of the Best Portuguese Restaurants 5/27/2009

I am from New Bedford, and I have to say that Cafe Funchal is definetly a staple in this community. Their food and drink menu is fantastic and I recommend the shrimp mozambique and the carne de espito. I love this place so much that I have planned my wedding reception here for October 2010. They have a gorgeous ballroom in the back of this restaurant for up to 400 people, what a lovely place! Pros: Great food, great atmosphere, amazing drink menu Cons: crowded and noisy more

Overpriced sub par food with annoying bar scene!! 2/22/2009

First, they messed up our reservations twice, then tried to squeeze 7 people onto a 6 peson set-up. Then I had to fight to add more room! The steak was sub-par, the tuna special was tough and stringy , the steak tips(Steak tips? more like chuck roast!) were tough and overcooked, tuna steak was overcooked and unappetizing and the beef on a stick was tough and just poor quality meat! Just sub-par food!! However, I must admit the mussels were great (the spicy red sauce) and the swordfish ok (but very thin). Word of warning, don't ever eat in the bar, unless of course you love rap music, wear your baseball cap backwards, wear your jeans down to your knees and aren't interested in carrying on a conversation with your guests- Noisy!! Pros: good mussels with spicy red sauce Cons: steak, tuna, beef all sub-par more

Best Food In Town 2/7/2009

Great food decor service Keep up the wonderful work. The time and care that the waitress showed was apprecitated, The choices gave us much to decide from. We have come here on five ocassions, and evertime enjoyed it all. You should be very proud. Pros: Food, Service, Decor, Clean Cons: Better lighted parking lot more

Horrible service and staff. 1/8/2009

Service is bad. Bartenders are rude. Need new ones. I am 55 yrs old, never seen rudeness and selfishness like this before. Food was cold and uncooked. I do not expect to go there again. Over priced by much. more

Very Nice Facility, Quality and Inexpensive Food 12/6/2008

This is a great portugese restaurant which also offers American-style food. Very good service, a very extensive menu. Inexpensive prices on food and beverages (including achoholic beverages). This is a newly constructed location for Cafe Funchal, and it is very impressive. There are 2 dining areas (one with a beverage bar and raw bar and wide-screen TVs), and one function room with a separate entrance. This is an excellent consumer value, and one of my favorite places to go. I have eaten here about 4 times now, and have never been dissapointed. Absolutely first class for a restaurant of this price range! There are two parking lots, and the rear lot is huge -- parking is very adequate. Pros: Great food, low prices, extensive menu, beautiful new facility, friendly, quality service Cons: can't think of one more

do not eat here! 11/5/2008

I can't believe what my best friend told me about this place. Rumors right from the manager and employee. The mind of these people are aweful. Do not eat here. I can't believe this is what I heard. Pros: None at all Cons: everything more

un-classy 11/5/2008

This place needs to close down. Food horrible! Staff horrible! Rumors from manager, especially from a manger HORRIBLE!!! Do not go here to have a nice time!! Cons: everything- rude more

Worst portuguese restaurant 8/10/2008

Cafe Funchal is the worst portuguese restaurant ever! The food is gross.... no flavor and not cooked to your asking. Pros: Lots of drinks to choose from Cons: Rude staff and horrible food. more

Good Portuguese Food 4/19/2008

Cafe Funchal has great customer service and the staff is very pleasant. It's a busy restaurant during normal meal times. The menu has a wide variety of items. Prices are reasonable for one or a family. The food is good, but you have to like Portuguese style meals in order to appreciate this place, as that is what they serve. Pros: Good food Cons: Portuguese style food only more

Sweet_Lou_Dunbar is RIGHT! Maxxie lies! 2/26/2008

Sweet Lou is absolutely right! Cafe Funchal moved to its new location before Sept 27, 2007, when Ed Camara wrote the review of the place for the New Bedford Standard Time, which you can see for yourself by searching the southcoasttoday dot com website. Pros: great place... worth a visit just for the ambiance Cons: mostly typical Portuguese food more

New Location as of Sept 2007 so last comment not accurate 11/30/2007

I don't know what that last user was talking about. This restaurant has moved to Church Street and is a wonderful new, happening place, with a great Portuguese menu. She said she had gone last Saturday and the comment was posted on 10/13/07, but there's no way. The way she describes the place was at the old location, so could not have been recent. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Should have walked out-Bad service, unwilling to accomadate! 10/12/2007

My husband and I walked in for a late lunch/early dinner last Sat evening (4:30 pm.) Had to enter through the bar and go around to the restaurant. There were 4 other tables occupied and we were seated at the only table for 2 that was left-between the Ladies and Men's room-yuk! I asked if we could be moved to another table, the waitress said she'd have to ask the owner. The owner/manager said they get too busy-and there were no other tables for 2 available-(THE TABLES ARE ON WHEELS!!!! serperate them!) As we got up to leave she said she'd do it this time but never again on a weekend. The paper placemats boasted that this is a ""Martini Bar"" and lists the vodkas by name. I ordered a Ciroc Martini and my husband ordered a glass of Mediera wine. The waitress informed us that a seared Tuna steak was tThe night's special-my husband ordered it rear and was told no, they only cook it well!! She prompltly served the wine in a small wine glass. After 15 mins I asked if they forgot my drink and was told that the replacement bartender didn't know how to make a Ciroc martini. Ciroc is the name of a Vodka-I changed my order! The meals were small and salty. And over cooked. When we got the bill and saw we were charged $14.00 for each small glass of wine and for a Ciroc Martini that I never got I brought it to the waitress's attention and was told she could not make any adjustments. She went over to the manager who started yelling at her in front of customers. We should have kept walking when they didn't want to change our seats! Cons: Does not accommodate customer requests, poor service-false advetising more
