The Q is average at best. The tea is quite good. Slaw is fair. Pups are good when not overcooked. The real reason to eat here is not the Q, but the other things on the menu. ...

Editorial review from Citysearch 5/29/2014

I think I've about had enough!\r Went in today..I am from Durham , work in the area so I have frequented Bullock's somewhat through the years, not as much latley and never as much in the future.. My one BIG, HUGE problem was my oysters were full of the Shell , which couldve tooken my teeth out and choked me to say the least.. The food was pretty much average, could take or leave but after this carless mishap, will not return. All I can do is shake my head because this business is going down hill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

WOW.....Great BBQ!!!!!! 12/23/2011

Recently did some work in Raleigh, NC and I happened to hear from some locals about this place. Of course I treated my project managers to dinner one night and we couldn't move the next day, not sure if that tells you anything but we ate so much.... we have never eatin, smelled, or even seen BBQ that came close to Bullock's. \r \r One thing they could do to improve is maybe spend some money and remodel the building. Besides that, great place for BBQ!!!!! more

Bullock's Bar B Cue Inc 7/27/2011

Permit me to preface this review by letting you know that I'm not knocking the quality of the food or the service, (although our waitress DID allow us to run out of hush puppies and run very low on beverages). more

Not what I'd hoped for in Southern Cooking 5/17/2011

I was lured to Bullock's by the CitySearch ratings, but can't concur with the high marks given by previous reviewers. The chicken livers were OK, but the sides were mediocre at best. Fried okra and green beans were forgettable. Hush puppies were great. Service was adequate, but you'd never accuse them of being friendly. We'll give them another chance. more

Outstanding Customer Service 5/15/2011

These folks are good! Especially Tommy Bullock, the owner/manager. I recently made a special order by phone from the Richmond area. First, my call was personally returned within 24 hours by Tommy. I explained I would be in Durham, NC for only a few hours and wanted my order ready by 5 PM. Even though the order was a special order and not on the menu, it was waiting for me when I arrived. The place was packed with customers! It was a Friday, yet my order was executed perfectly. Thanks again Tommy for a job well done! more

Super Sides! 4/23/2011

The main offerings are top notch, of couse, but we find that most of the side dishes are really super delicious. more

They reuse food?? 5/21/2010

I have only eaten there once, we ordered the family style... now I am completely grossed out to know that they serve food that has already been on someone eles' table. What if they coughed or sneezed on the food? OMG, I don't even want to think about it. There is no way this is acceptable per Health Inspection regulations.. right? We didn't eat all of the first round of food and I felt bad about wasting so much, the server told me they would reuse it... I didn't believe them, I thought they were kidding until I read this post. I know this restaurant has been around for a long time, and I know they don't need MY business... so I won't be back. more

they reuse food 1/4/2010

everything that they send out to the family style meal...like brunswick stew, slaw, green beans...they reuse it...whatever is not eaten they put back in with the other food and reserve....it's nasty. they get rid of the good help...there were three girls that were young and were on top of things...they got rid of them and kept the people that are on drugs...don't show up or show up late and are high or hung over....and they are so slow when it comes to waiting on tables. Pros: reuse food more

Bullock's Barbecue is falling off!! 12/5/2009

The food use to be so good! Lately, they are really fallling off. The staff is pleasant as always but the food just isn't up to parr like it use to be. The chicken is the only thing that is still holding the torch. more

The Thing I Miss Most About the South 11/4/2009

You don't go to Bullock's for the decor or if you want something fancy, you go for the home-y, delicious comfort food. Bullock's has the best BBQ I've found anywhere, and I eat a lot of BBQ! If you've never tried NC BBQ (instead of Texas or Memphis BBQ), you really should try it. It's not for everyone, but you really taste the actual meat instead of just the sauce and it can be fantastic if done right - like they do it at Bullock's and have been for many, many years! Bullock's also has great sides (the best are the hush puppies, another souther mainstay). Personally I think their greenbeans are over cooked, but I know a lot of people who like them like that and swear by them. Whenever I make it back to NC, Bullock's is the first place I go. It's truly a taste of home! Don't miss it! Pros: the best BBQ anywhere, great sides, family-style servings Cons: lackluster decor and long lines more

Great Eastern NC BBQ 9/22/2009

My favorite BBQ restaurant. I took Jamie & Bobby Deen there last week and they were delighted with the food, menu, Tommy's visit to our table. Pros: Great Q & Stew, hushpuppies, long menu more

From Colorado 8/24/2009

This BBQ is so good, my Mom had it shipped out to CO for my birthday !! It arrived frozen & in a styrafoam container .....in perfect condition. It is unusually good -- not like the BBQ smothered in ketchup-y sauce that I find here out west. Not only is the BBQ great -- but the Brunswick Stew is unbelievable! Sweet, salty, & tangy all at the same time -- the perfect combination! Yes....Mom sent some stew, too !!! Great Birthday!! Pros: They ship !!!! Cons: There's no Bullock's in Colorado! more

Bullock's Barbecue is the Real Deal 8/15/2009

Forgive me ...for I have wandered into the Valley of Temptation and BBQ ! I had lunch at a self-proclaimed BBQ joint at Crossroads in Cary! It was Bland...it was Boring.... it was not Bullock's. But ! I have been reborn and have committed to driving that extra distance... so that I may pleasure myself with Culinary Delights as they should be. Amen more

Spectacularly bad 8/15/2009

Tonight I brought an out-of-town guest to Bullock's for his first taste of eastern NC BBQ. He ordered a BBQ plate with fries and slaw, I ordered a plate of cold boiled shrimp with baked potato and slaw. I cannot imagine an easier order. After waiting more than 35 minutes for our food to arrive, his fries were cold and had to be sent back, my baked potato was just barely baked long enough to eat, and I was served seven shrimp for my meal. That's right - seven. I have had more shrimp in a shrimp cocktail. When asked by the cashier how our meal was, we were honest. She did not apologize or offer any compensation. I will not be back. Ever. Pros: I'm not still there Cons: Bad service, mediocre food, long wait more

Great food, especially great for leftovers! 1/8/2009

Our family has taken to getting our food to go. 1.5 lbs of barbecue (sliced is our favorite), 3 pints of our favorite sides, and some of those amazing hushpuppies! We're out the door for around 27 bucks, but we usually get 8 meals out of it! I have a child with dietary issues also (gluten & dairy) and he's thrilled at how many different things he can eat there. Truly a Durham staple. Love it! more

Over 120 lbs. and knows where to find the best food in the Raleigh-Durham area 12/20/2008

Although I went to college in Durham, I have lived in and/or visited many places...to name a few...San Fransico, Atlanta, Rochester (NY), Cincinnati and Europe (Spain, France and Italy). When I really want some "pleasure food", I don't think of the foods from Europe that I never learned to pronounce, but I look closer to home... Bullock's. When visiting my sister in Durham, I don't feel that my visit is complete unless I have had a taste of Bullock's Barbecue. The midwest and north make a good attempt at making "southern barbeque", but if you want the really good stuff, go to Bullock's. Since my sister is a regular visitor, she knows some of the staff. Our visits always seem like we are sitting in a relative's kitchen. It you want a big dose of southern charm with some really great food, go to Bullock's. Pros: Food is always good Cons: Unless you arrive early, parking and getting seated may be a problem more

Great food and a great family. 11/11/2008

I have know the Bullock family for nearly 18 years and send many hours with them in their restaurant.I know of no one who shows the passion and dedication like this family does to feed and please the public.Running an independently owned family business against the larger chains in this day and time is extremely difficult. The Bullock family's survival is a testimate to their quality food, hard work and love for what they do. Pros: quality home cooking at very reasonable prices. more
