Best

I've been to at least 10 different Thai places throughout Boston, but Brown Sugar is by far the best!!

Worst

I know that Pad Thai should be spicy but I prefer when it is more bland. We actually got take out from here one night because everyone raves about how awesome this restaurant is....

Fresh, exciting Thai food near Boston U 7/19/2008

My wife & I visited boston this week and had a taste for some Thai. After reading a few reviews on various sites, we decided to try the Brown Sugar Cafe. We were staying near Copley Square and decided to ride the T (subway) to the restaurant which is located near a T stop. The T ride cost us a little under $7 total for a round trip ride and the stop was literally less than 50 feet from the Brown Sugar Cafe's front door. Upon entering we were quickly seated and given an EXPANSIVE menu with great descriptions of TONS of different, exciting dishes. There is something for everyone on this menu (assuming you like Thai food!). I settled on a simple soup appetizer and my wife got some sort of mimosa type pastry appetizers. Both arrived piping hot and were extremely flavorful. For the main course my wife ordered a wonderful chicken dish which was served in a half pineapple and I ordered a fantastic spicy tender beef dish. Again, everything was piping hot (temperature) and tasty. The service was excellent all night and all food we ate was wonderfully fresh and hot. The music was a little goofy for a Thai place. That night they were playing some sort of Celine Dion-esque stuff which didn't enhance the environment much, but this was easily overlooked in the face of the good food. Also, I've seen other reviews saying Brown Sugar is a good romantic date night. I think it's a better place to take friends. I only say this because it's not a very quiet place. The ceilings are high and there was a lot of talk bouncing through the room, giving it the feel of a very lively restaurant as opposed to an "intimate" restaurant. Finally, the prices were very reasonable (our main courses were each around $14) and the portions were perfect. Highly recommend. Enjoy, TZ TZ Pros: huge exciting menu, easily accessible from the T, fresh! Cons: music was a little cheesy more

Great food. Extremely friendly. 10/11/2007

I went to Brown Sugar (my favorite Thai restaurant) after several years of moving to the west coast. I went dduring lunch but and I managed to order my favorite dish, the crispy duck, even though it is a dinner dish and takes time to make. The waiters were very happy to hear I was returning from out of town to eat at their restaurant and were glad to make my favorite dish. They are wonderful and friendly and deserve every star for their great food and great attitude. Thanks. Pros: Great Food, Nice People, Very affordable Cons: Location on Jersey Street is far from T stops more

Best Thai around 9/27/2007

I've been to Brown Sugar a few wonderful times. Their food is absolutely the best Thai I've had in Boston. I'd go there all the time if parking wasn't such a nightmare in the Fenway. Still, for a date this is the place to go. It's intimate and the servers are fantastic. They refill your water and check in with you an appropriate amount, which is important. And the food, holy moly, it's great! I had the green curry, which was the perfect viscosity and spiciness. Pros: food quality, service Cons: parking more

Best Thai around! 6/13/2007

This place is amazing for those of you who love Thai, those of you wanting to try it for the first time and everyone in between! The quality and amount of food you get for the price is just outstanding. Food is always fresh and served promptly. One of the things I miss about living in the neighborhood is Brown Sugar! The seating is a bit tight - inside and outside. Even if you'd rather have more space, it is still worth it to at least go once. The chicken mango curry is my favorite! more

Would say everything so wonderful!!!! nice, warm and cozy room.....there're big lovely gold fish in the tank.I'm a regular customer and I prefer the service from "Em" (actually her name is Oi but if you call her Em that easier) beautiful smile and always promt to service. The thing that make her diffirent is she doesn't come to just ask you what you want to eat but always has good recommendation for the fist time to try some thing new and ,once No.. many times that I saw the other gir(Big girl)l just comes to say "Hi,Are you ready to order?yes, what would you like?Excuseme, anything alright? Are you done?"That's it she can say I don't understand why?that totally different.Anyhow Brown Sugar Cafe still the great place to go.I'm falling in there food and service. more

Great neighborhood Thai place 7/5/2006

Great food in a student-y environment. Great drinks too! Very homey atmosphere. I'm not the biggest fan of Thai food, but this place was great! Pros: Good food and drinks. Nice ambiance. Cons: Parking is tough, but not impossible. more

BEST THAI FOOD EVER!!! 2/1/2006

I've tried numerous thai restaurants both east & west coast but nothing comes close to it. You must try Siamese twin dish. It's an absolute MUST!!! But everything else is good, too. If you're in Boston, you must try this place. You won't regret it. Only downside is service but the food is worth it. more

Good Solid Thai Food, I prefer to do take out 8/5/2005

I am a frequent customer. The portions are well sized. The food is solid and the variety is good. I prefer to take out rather than sit in the cramped dining area. Pros: the food Cons: dining area more

best thai food 6/21/2005

User review by browniesprinkles 3/11/2005

A great place to hit up every once in awhile. The food is excellent although the portions are quite large so be careful when you order! be sure to try everything as in an appetizer, main course and of course dessert! try fried bananas with coconut ice cream. Get a traditional thai ice tea with your meal or a chilled lychee or coconut drink. They are all excellent. The pad see-ew and kua gai noodles are among one of my roommate and my favorites. The food is inexpensive and is a great place to chill. It gets quite chilly in there and there are always a lot of people but the wait never exceeds 20 minutes. Pros: inexpensive, good service, good atmosphere/view Cons: crowded at times, chilly more

GREAT THAI FOOD!!! 1/26/2005

Wow...I've been going to this restaurant for some time now and I am still amazed at their food! Everything is prepared very nicely and beautifully. The staff is very attentive and cordial. The fried ice cream seems to shrink in size everytime I order it, but it is still a must for me to end a wonderful meal. Pros: inexpensive, nice atmosphere, good staff Cons: street parking more

Quaint and Delicious 9/27/2004

LOVE this place. The food is inventive and authentic. Portions are a good size--enough to share and anyone who is somewhat interested in Thai food will LOVE this. For desert--get the Fried Ice cream. YUM! Pros: service, decor, food more

Outstanding! 7/18/2004

We love Thai food and have tried a number of wonderful Thai restaurants in Boston, however Brown Sugar is the best by far. Recommended by friends who live in the West Fenway, we have now dined there twice and will continue to go back. Flavorful food, beautiful presentations, reasonable prices, nicely mixed crowd of patrons, excellent and friendly service, a true delight from start to finish. Highly recommended! Pros: Quality of Food, Service, Prices more

Awesome Experience! 12/11/2003

Best Thai food that I've ever had! Specialties are to die for! Would recommend to anyone. Very cozy environment! They sat us far enough away from others that the small rest. atmosphere didn't interrupt the mood. Very reasonably priced! Brown Sugar Cafe got my boyfriend and I hooked on the Thai Iced Tea! more

Wonderful Thai 9/24/2003

This place has EXCELLENT food. It may be a little pricier than regular thai food, but it's worth it. I'd recommend this little cafe for anyone who likes Asian food. YummY! Pros: Good location, Food Cons: A tad expensive more

Surprisingly Good Thai food in Boston 8/29/2003

I recently went on a trip to Boston with my boyfriend and we tried out Brown Sugar Cafe. The green curry was disappointing; however, my boyfriend ordered this noodle dish that was so flavorful and yummy! I think the noodles are the way to go at this restaurant. I recommend coming here. Pros: food more

best thai food in boston 8/7/2003

Everything about Brown Sugar is top notch. The service is fast, but never interferes with the quality of the food. Rare waits for seating even during the busiest lunch- or dinner-times. The menu is extensive and the prices are great. A lunch that more than satisfies can be gotten for well under $10.00 and dinner for under $20.00, including beverages. The wait-staff are kind and prompt in their service. Highly recommended! Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Great Atmosphere Cons: Limited parking more

Consistently Good 1/22/2003

Brown Sugar is a great place to have dinner away from the crowded and overpriced downtown counterparts. The restaurant is clean and the service is always friendly. Try the mango curry and rama duck! It's also a great place to meet a group of friends for dinner. Pros: Good food, good value, great service more

Thai at its best 1/2/2003

Memories of eating at Brown Sugar Cafe still hunt me...after 6 months of moving from Boston! Food is a wonderful mix of spices, herbs, fruits, vegetables and exotic meats....best of all: imagine rich chunks of marinated duck meat, with cashews, chilis and pinnapple pieces: "chili duck", the best recipe I ever tried at Brown Sugar. Thai iced tea is also very tasty here. The place is cozy but crowded. Service is quite good. Prices are very reasonable. I have tried great authentic Thai in different parts of the world, not one of them as wonderful as Brown Sugar. Although some might argue that American influence is a negative issue...I believe it brings the best out of Asian cuisine. Definitely DO NOT miss it! Pros: flavor, variety, inexpensive Cons: crowded, parking, small waiting area more

Good Dining 10/18/2002

The food wasn't overpriced. The menu is split into americanized thai and plain old thai- depending on your tastes. There is a wide variety to choose from and practically ANYTHING you order is wonderful. The servers were agreeable, answering questions about their food. We were seated within 10 minutes- which is really good considering that most good restaurants will make you wait for nearly up to an hour. I give this a 10 in everything. Pros: Service, Good Food, Variety of Food more

  • The Scene
The square dining room is crammed with tables, some spaced only inches apart and each boasting a pot of brown sugar. A few half-hearted attempts at Thai decor (maps, tapestries) prove that atmosphere is secondary to food. Christmas lights and foliage border the room, which is perpetually packed and abuzz with a steady din. Service is friendly and efficient.

    The Food
The voluminous menu guarantees that Thai traditionalists and newcomers alike will find something to try. Pages of traditional rice and noodle dishes, prepared without MSG, arrive as spicy as your taste buds can tolerate. So-called "gourmet originals" offer more than a dozen bases for a choose-your-own-adventure experience (like bok choi or basil) to which you add your choice of meats. Try "Siamese Twins," a massive portion of chicken, shrimp, pineapple and watercress in a hot sweet-and-sour sauce.
