Best

I've been to at least 10 different Thai places throughout Boston, but Brown Sugar is by far the best!!

Worst

I know that Pad Thai should be spicy but I prefer when it is more bland. We actually got take out from here one night because everyone raves about how awesome this restaurant is....

The best Thai place in Boston! 10/14/2002

This is the best Thai restaurant that I've been to in Boston. The prices are cheap, the hours are great, the service is fast, and the atmosphere is beautiful! I highly suggest this restaurant to those who love Thai food and to those who have never tried Thai before! I've never had a unpleasant experience here. more

Thai food to order 8/17/2002

With a menu over 10 pages long, there's something to suit every taste at this small Thai cafe in the heart of the Fenway. A neighborhood favorite for both residents and local businesses, Brown Sugar's inviting indoor/outdoor cafe features a friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff and a lightening-fast kitchen crew. Everything on the menu is made to order, and can be as spicy or bland as the adventurous appetite of the diner. Lunch sees a busy crowd of local businesspeople, while dinner welcomes a mostly local crowd of young couples and groups of friends. Outdoor seating is limited and sought-after, especially on a warm summer evening - a truly inviting place to enjoy drinks and the area's finest Thai cuisine. Pros: ambience, service, value/quality of food Cons: limited parking, limited seating, not good for kids more

Sweet & Spicy 7/28/2002

The food is delicious, and you have to try the Thai Iced Tea. It is out of this world more

You'll never eat Thai anywhere else 6/12/2002

I'm a big fan of Thai food and I've been lucky enough to try Thai in several places in many cities around the US. This is by far, THE best Thai anywhere ever. I've yet to find a better Thai restaurant in Boston or anywhere else. Don't miss the Tom Yum Goong soup or the unreal Chicken Gaprow. The flavor is sweet basil and spices that'll blow you away. The country Pad-Thai is also a favorite. Pros: outdoor seating, very inexpensive more

He-man portions! 5/14/2002

Most entrees are under $15, and the portions are huge. Plan to take at least half your dinner home. Start with the chicken satays served with peanut sauce. The pad thai is excellent, as are all of the dishes served in the hollowed out pineapples. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
The square dining room is crammed with tables, some spaced only inches apart and each boasting a pot of brown sugar. A few half-hearted attempts at Thai decor (maps, tapestries) prove that atmosphere is secondary to food. Christmas lights and foliage border the room, which is perpetually packed and abuzz with a steady din. Service is friendly and efficient.

    The Food
The voluminous menu guarantees that Thai traditionalists and newcomers alike will find something to try. Pages of traditional rice and noodle dishes, prepared without MSG, arrive as spicy as your taste buds can tolerate. So-called "gourmet originals" offer more than a dozen bases for a choose-your-own-adventure experience (like bok choi or basil) to which you add your choice of meats. Try "Siamese Twins," a massive portion of chicken, shrimp, pineapple and watercress in a hot sweet-and-sour sauce.
