Broadway Animal Hospital

On Jan. 31 2013 our beloved Bulldog Oscar suffered unnecessary pain and lost his life within 3 hours after what was supposed to be a simple surgery at this ""animal hospital"". I am a RN with 30 years of clincal experience. My wife is a Doctor of Pharmacy. When I picked Oscar up after surgery, performed by Royal Smalley DVM, he was in extreme pain and had noisy, labored respirations. After much complaining about his condition he was finally medicated for extreme pain for the ride home with something called ""hydro"". The ""vet tech"" gave him an injection in the back seat of my car and told me to go home ""he will be fine"". 35 minutes later his breathing became shallow, slower and quieter and he whispered away. I could not revive him. Royal Smalley DVM did not look at Oscar after the surgery, nor did he come out to see him when I complained about his pain and breathing. The staff told me to ""take him home he is fine"" they were closing soon. Beware of ""hydro"". It is actually hydromorphone, aka Dilaudid, an extremely potent respiratory depressant ten times the strength of morphine. Yesterday I received Oscar's record and discovered that Oscar was a diabetic. His preoperative lab results showed a blood sugar that was off the scale. Royal Smalley DVM either did not look at the preop labs, for which we paid extra, or he chose to ignor them. Either way we were not informed. I would have cancelled surgery and treated the hyperglycemia. There are too many disturbing details to describe here but the message is this. Insist that vets notify the owner of lab results before performing surgery. Beware of ""hydro"". Check out your ""animal hospital"". Is it really a hospital? Does it offer a greater level of safety and service than a vet's office or clinic. The word ""hospital"" infers an ability to safely recover surgical patients and not discharge them until they are stable, as well as evaluate patients before administering potent narcotics and observe until stable. Animal Hosptals should not be solo practices. Do not go to Broadway Animal ""hosptal"" and Royal Smalley DVM. He is currently under multiple investigations. Smalley has previous action against him on his record also involving respiratory depression mortality and lack of appropriate record keeping. Watch King 5 News GetJesse for the continuing story. We've been going to Broadway Animal Hospital ever since I can remember. Dr. Smalley is absolutely wonderful. I have never been so educated in one visit to this Animal Hospital as I have been with Dr. Smalley. I feel truly grateful he has come to the Hospital. And my animals are healthier than ever. more

We are pretty new to the Broadway Animal Hospital but not to Dr Smalley. Dr Smalley has been our vet for almost 10 years. Most of that time Dr Smalley cared for my three pets (I lost my cat last year). With three pets, we have had the full range of services ? from routine check-ups, to emergency care and a number of surgeries. I can honestly say that I have always been grateful for and impressed with the care that my pets have received ? the absolute best of care, responsiveness to every need and more than fair pricing. Have been taking my baby there for a while. I have not had a single problem. They have low prices and are very friendly. My baby is terrified of men and the doctors take time every time we go in there to make her comfortable with him before he even looks her over. She had to have surgery to remove her eye. I was misquoted about 400 to 500 less than what the price was. However they did honor the quote I was given so instead of her surgery costing me anywhere from 800 to 1000 it was only 500. I love the staff, they are pleasant, nice and respectful. I would recommend anyone to them. Their office is not the best looking, but don't judge a book by it's cover. Give this place a chance this is great. more

I won't be going back. My dog started having blood in the urine last Thursday and I was referred to Broadway Animal Hospital by the spay and neuter clinic up the road. They made an appointment for the next day. I was skeptical upon entering the run down place, but the staff at the desk was friendly and handled my dog very well. Dr. Shepard was also very good with him upon examination. I left him for about an hour while they ran some tests and when I came back I was told that it was a stone about the size of a walnut and that he also had an infection. Dr Shepard stated that he needed surgery. As an unemployed student, I was very limited on funds. As a nursing student I paid very close attention to the examination and in asking questions about alternatives. I was pretty much told that surgery was the only option, and that it was a stone...nothing else was ever mentioned. I was notified the day of his surgery that it wasn't a stone, but a enlarged prostate. Alas, the surgery had already been done...a very unneeded surgery to a problem that only needed some antibiotics. It was pointed out to me that because there was no stone, I wouldn't be charged the exam fee for sending the stone in. Whoopee! When I started to question Dr. Shepard about being charged for an unneeded surgery and was there anything else that could have been done to avoid the surgery I was told that it would have cost me almost as much to have an ultra sound. I was told that I wouldn't be getting anything less than what I would have paid for if he had had the stone. Dr. Shepard explained to me that he had performed a rectal exam while I was there and found nothing wrong with the prostate. He did not perform it while I was in the room, as I watched everything for my own learning experience as well as this being a family member. As a former security specialist, I did my research on this before posting. An ultra sound would have been less expensive than the evasive surgery. A performed rectal exam would have revealed an enlarged prostate of that size. When he showed me the X-Ray, you could visibly see how light the ""stone"" was. Admittedly so by Dr. Shepard, and he stated that stones have more calcium in them so they show up darker on the X-Ray. His work was sloppy and incomplete. As Dr. Shepard fumbled through his explaining, I gave him one worded answers, as I could feel myself getting upset at the situation and had to bite my tongue at making him verbally aware of the anger I had begun to feel. I felt that as we said good bye...his response of ""Have a nice day."" was extremely inappropriate. I won't be taking any of my fur babies back to that place. I wouldn't have given it any stars if that were an option. more

Dr. Gill and Dr. Shepherd are both wonderful-Dr. Gill fixed both my cats for free under the Joan Fund back in 2007, and they give my cats both the top notch care and keep the costs low. One of my cats had an emergency a couple months ago, and I had to rush him in-he was so sick he needed IV fluids, antibiotics, special food, etc. They did all his care with compassion, professionalism, great skill, and were quick to get him into an exam room. I was in and out quickly, and at minimal cost. Anywhere else, I would have probably paid at least $700 or more for the visit, and here, it was under $150, and his care was still excellent. They're always available for questions, and friendly and polite when I call, and are willing to be flexible with me. Being on disability, it's reassuring to know my animals will still get excellent vet care without them seeing dollar signs as soon as I walk in the door. I'm glad I found them, and will always go there for care & would highly recommend them to anyone. more

I took three cats to Dr. Gill to have their teeth cleaned. The first one did fine. The second, a male, was a bit wobbly when he got home, but other than that appeared to be fine. A few months later I took the third cat, a female, to Dr. Gill for her teeth cleaning. When I brought her home and took her out of her carrier, I realized that she could not walk, was deaf, appeared to be blind and seemed to have lost her sense of smell. No one, including Dr. Gill, was aware of there being a problem when I contacted them. This is not excusable to me! I found a new vet and had this cat's records faxed to him. When he reviewed the pre-anesthesia lab work that Dr. Gill had done on her, he found that she had very elevated liver enzymes. Dr. Gill never informed me of this. Maybe she did not know. I would NEVER put a cat under anesthesia for a teeth cleaning if I had known that her liver was not in good enough shape to handle the anesthesia; and it was not. The new vet did all he could, but the damage done was irreversible. My sweet girl cat' s health declined rapidly and she died. A few months later my male cat started loosing weight, so I had his records faxed and found that he had been in renal failure for almost a year, but Dr. Gill had never informed me of this either. By the time I found out it was too late. His health declined and he died as well. One cat out of three survived the care they received at Broadway Animal Hospital. This is NOT a good record. You may find cheaper, but you won't find better service and care for less money. Period. Dr. Dawn Gill and Dr. Bill Shepherd are fantastic, knowledgeable doctors, and their small staff is top-notch. For the record, Dr. Gill is primarily a feline vet, and Dr. Shepherd a canine vet, although they are both equally capable.
