Terrible Experience 10/1/2009

I will never go back to Bonterra. I purchased a gift certificate from the Charlotte half off website and unfortunately when I brought it to the restaurant to use it the waiter was completely rude to me. He seemed annoyed that I had the gift certificate and I was shocked by his attitude. He glared at me and told me that I could not use the $40 gift certificate towards alcohol. I was taking my boyfriend out for a surprise dinner for his birthday and the least expensive entree on the menu was $26. I definitely was planning on spending at least $52 on 2 meals that evening. I explained this to him but he still gave us terrible service all evening. He was late to bring our drinks and our bread. Everyone around us was receiving great service. When it was time to leave I gave him a 20% tip on the entire bill before discount. I only did this to prove to him that he didn't need to be so rude and that I was going to leave him a good tip. I really shouldn't have done that! The total bill came to over $100 so I don't know what this guys problem was. Basically my boyfriend and I left the restaurant hungry and frustrated and I had spent more money on dinner than I ever had anywhere else. What a waste of time and money! I wouldn't have minded that the portions were so small if I had actually received good service. I tried to contact the owners twice via phone but was told by my waiter that I would never be able to reach them. He told me that I needed to write an email from the website which I did, but of course did not receive a response. I also wrote 2 letters in the mail. I wasn't asking for a refund or even an apology. All that I asked from the owners was an explanation as to why they would advertise gift certificates on Charlotte Half Off if they were going to be rude to the customers who actually decide to take advantage of the offer. I would not advise anyone to visit this restaurant. Pros: Beautiful restaurant Cons: Terrible customer service more

Excellent Food - Atmosphere good after dark 8/4/2008

Went Saturday night. Valet parked in the parking lot? Little strange but I guess they are trying to avoid the lot being used by the neighbors. Pros: Food, service, wine Cons: ambience was a bit stark in the daylight, better after dark more

Could be one of the City's best 5/13/2008

Overall a wonderful experience. My wife and I were in Charlotte on business and went to Bonterra to celebrate our 16th wedding aniversary. We were not disappointed with the food, wine or waiter. Really enjoyed the wine selection (even though it is hard to read on the menu because of the print and deem lighting). We both started with salads (Magnolia and Azeala) which were wonderful. We both had Filet Mignon which was made to perfection. I complimented my steak with a fried lobster tail which was insane! The mixture of the fried lobster with the filet created a wonderful tastebud experience. We finished the meal with a very good creme brule and cappacinos. Abosultely adored the ambience and deep south setting. more

one of my favorites! 1/26/2008

This restaurant is wonderful! I enjoy my meal every time and I have never been led astray from a good glass of wine. A little pricey but worth every penny... more

Wonderful menu, service and food 2/22/2007

We were looking for a special restaurant and absolutely LOVED Bonterra. Two of us had the fried lobster tail, which was amazing, and the duck and scallops were also delicious. The Magnolia salad was perfect; they gave you a large hunk of goat cheese on top. The individual souffles were amazing and they had an extremely extensive wine list. We did think it was extremely strange that you were forced to valet park but the parking lot was right there. It would have been way easier to park ourselves. The spot was two feet away from the door! Pros: Food, service, wine list Cons: Parking- valet was required but unnecessary more

Spectacular all the way around! 8/8/2006

Ryan and I were celebrating two years together so he made a reservation about two weeks before we went in last Friday (Aug. 4th). The directions they gave him over the phone were easy to follow, the valet promtly took our car, we were seated immediately, and greeted with fantastic service that continued throughout the duration of the meal. We had been planning to for sometime but hadn't had the chance, however, I now know it was well worth the wait! We started with the extensive wine list, had magnolia salads (with warm goat cheese - delicious) moved onto duck with gnocchi and pork tenderloin with a grit cake and pancetta topped peach - both were tender and very well paired and prepared. Dessert is typically my favorite part of the meal yet here everything was so good it's hard to say it was absolutely my favorite but we were again, impressed. One chocolate molten cake with homemade (slighty tangy - a nice surprise) cherry ice cream and the Barking Dog chocolate sampler we were incredibly full and satisfied. The atmosphere there was perfect for an anniversary - we had privacy, impecable service, an outstanding meal (Ryan has cooked for various upscale restaurants, caterers, and country clubs so he's hard to impress - he was), and the environment was warm, formal without being stuffy. The only thing some may not enjoy is the menu's limited selection of about ten entrees, however, if that's the kind of cuisine you want there's something there for everyone - chicken, fish, beef, pork, duck, etc. Highly recommended to anyone looking for fine cuisine, a welcoming environment, and friendly yet professional staff. Pros: Professional/friendly staff, excellent food, large wine list Cons: Limited entree menu more

Not quite what i expected 3/23/2006

Definetly had a great experience at bonterra. There was about 25 of us for a birthday party a couple of weeks ago and we had an awesome time. We were probably a liitle annoying to the wait staff but you would have never known. The servive was absolutly great as well as the food. It was a little pricey, but what do you expect for incredible food?! I would love to go back for a more intimate setting and a full meal. I look forward to my next visit!!! Complaments to the chef!! Pros: valet/parking, service/waitstaff, atmosphere more

Excellent 10/5/2005

One of the finest restaurants in Charlotte. Be prepared to spend over $100 for 2 people because it is expensive but well worth it. Service is excellent and the food was amazing. The server knew exactly which wine to pair with each course and was very attentive to our needs. Impressive interior and elegant styling. Wonderful place to take someone you really want to impress. Pros: food, service, atmosphere more

Very Classy & Romantic Dinner 5/30/2005

The food was excellent & unique! The wine list was amazing & the waiter was very helpful. We had reservations & were seated upstairs in the balcony at 6pm on a Saturday. It was very quiet. Within the next 2 hours, the restaurant filled up downstairs at the tables & wine bar. It was noisy down there & much more casual. I was so glad to be upstairs for our romantic dinner & glad that we went early. The setting is neat, but it doesn't look as ""churchy"" as I had expected, particularly up in the balcony. The food & service were great though. Recommended as a special occasion restaurant. Pros: romantic, amazing food, wine list Cons: noisy wine bar more

Absolutely Superb Restaurant 2/21/2003

Probably one of the best upscale restaurants in which I've ever had the pleasure of eating, including those where I've dined in the U. S. or Europe. Food and service are top quality. Pros: Top quality & upscale, Former church bldg., Valet parking Cons: Expensive more

Bonterra is AMAZING! 1/2/2003

I can't say enough about the wonderful experience I had at Bonterra recently. My boyfriend and I went on New Year's Eve and had a great time. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive, the ambience was great (very romantic!), and the food was outstanding! I highly recommend the fire-roasted filet and the Magnolia salad. I definitely recommend this restaurant for a special, romantic evening! Pros: Excellent food, Great wine list, Beautiful building more

Sexy 11/15/2002

Bonterra is the most romantic restaurant in the city! It can also boast the best food and a most extensive wine list with over 200 by the glass alone! The waitstaff is professional and very knowledgeable as well. Pros: Great date place, great wine list, wonderful ambience more
