A Memphis Must 9/30/2009

Excellent fall off the bone ribs in an interesting setting. My wife likes her ribs dry and she loved them as well. The sides are good, especially the beans. I'm not a cole slaw fan so was not impressed with the slaw. The chili was also excellent. The place has 2 dining areas and 2 bars, one with music. We ate in the bar with entertainment and loved it. I have been here at least 5 times over a period of time and it is always excellent. Pros: Best Ribs in Town Cons: Cole Slaw more

Good food in the heart of Beale 8/18/2008

This was our first stop when we rolled into Memphis in the middle of the night. We read that this was Bill Clinton's favorite place to eat in Memphis. We were greeted with a friendly, ""Sit anywhere you want!"" and were immediately happy with the authentic ""dirty South"" atmosphere. At first we were dismayed by the limited menu, but we came to discover over the weekend that this is common in Memphis -- places tend to do a few things very, very well, opting for quality over quantity. I ordered the chicken breast plate, which consisted of friend chicken strips with honey mustard and steak fries. It was absolutely delicious -- best honey mustard I've ever had. The beer selection was pretty good. Our waiter was wonderful, friendly but not overbearing. Best of all, we could watch the goings-on on Beale Street while we ate and drank. I liked this place -- felt like home. Pros: Food, service, atmosphere, location, price Cons: Limited menu more

best barbecue 8/3/2008

best barbecue with all the fixins ... this is a must stop if you're traveling through Memphis ... or staying on. With their long hours, me and the family always go for a memorable meal, whatever the time. Welcome is great -- good folks, too. more

Succulent ribs, beautifully spiced. A great honky-tonk, and it's open late. 4/29/2008

Succulent ribs, the meat tender and beautifully spiced. I did not find them as saucy as others said. Don't bother with an appetizer - you'll be stuffed with the ribs and other entrees looked even larger. A great spot - just avoid Sundays; they are off their game on an off night. On a Sunday visit, the ribs and beans arrived cold with blazing hot fries. That was fixed fast enough, and the warm ribs were comfort food that few can match. The sauce is fabulous too. It's great that it's open late, and they are very welcoming if you are on your own. Enjoy! Pros: Delicious food, friendly service. Cons: A dive - not really a ""Con."" more

Best ribs, skillet shrimp 11/18/2007

This is a very popular place, with good reason. Highly recommended: Ribs, skillet shrimp, seafood gumbo, catfish. Not recommended: Beef stew, marinated salad, crab au gratin. If you are alone or with one other person, they will steer you to the bar to eat to keep the dining room tables free for larger groups, so expect it to happen when they're busy. Best time to go is late afternoon/very early evening. Great service whether you're in the dining room or the bar. These are VERY friendly people. A bit pricey, but the location is high-rent. One more thing: Their beef stew?\r \r Don't. \r \r PLEASE don't. Pros: The ribs and skillet shrimp Cons: That beef stew more

Woohooo!!! 7/18/2004

The first time I went to this place I had the ribs wet and they were so tender I could cut the meat with a fork....Wonderful stuff...and the catfish is SOOO much better!! Highly recommend this place, but it is a little pricey so take money. Pros: Good food, Great atmosphere Cons: , Possible wait more

BEST RIBS IN MEMPHIS 6/14/2004

Having been a chef for over 30 yrs, and sampled a wide variety of ribs and bbq in the greater Memphis area, I have found the ribs at Blue's City Cafe to be, by far, the best ribs in thec city of Memphis ... wet or dry they are tender, moist, flavorful, as well as plentiful. These ribs are far superior to those of the establishments that have been promoted and hyped, that never seem to live up to their reputations. Pros: Ribs, Steaks, Prices Cons: , crowds more

Fantabulous 6/8/2004

My husband and I were there last month (May) and had a terrific time at the restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was great. The place looked like it did many moons ago and I know when we return to Memphis we will also return to Blues City Cafe. Hope they never change the atmosphere of the place. Pros: Reasonable, Great tasting, Good music Cons: , n/a, n/a more

I'll be BACK! 5/12/2004

Was there in April. First time and it was so very good. I have never been a rib person until my experience with this place and what fun to watch the chefs as you wait. Go early eve! Can be extremely busy after dark. I have tried ribs often since here at home but NONE have even come close in comparison. Will definetly be my first stop when I'm back in town! more

Your choices 6/7/2003

First and foremost, The Big Thing in Memphis are the Bar-B-Q Ribs!! Every Cafe in Memphis claims to have the best ""Wet"" and/or ""Dry"" Ribs. They will lure you in; but, be ready to PAY!! $$20.00 which includes a very small portion of Coleslaw, Pork-N-Beans, and a slab of Pork. Is it worth? Hmm..If you like Ribs.. Go ahead and try it. Now ""Dry Ribs"" is a Memphis Thing. I didnt like the taste. I like Sauce on my RIBS. But, the best value in the Fried Catfish. FYI..It's located directly across from BB King's Cafe Pros: The Catfish, Prompt Service Cons: Noisy more

Best BBQ ever! 9/1/2002

We went in here without knowing what a gem we'd found. I had to buy a bottle of their BBQ sauce and now wish I'd bought a case -- and that was a week ago! The next time we go to Memphis we are making a bee-line to the Blue City Cafe. more

Excellent 8/11/2002

This is one of the best barbecue places in the USA. We lived in Memphis for 2 years and have traveled all around and go back everytime we go to Memphis. I highly recommend this place. more
