Parisian dining experience in little, rural McMinnville, Oregon 5/6/2007

A few minutes and a few bites into our first dining experience at Bistro Maison, my wife said, ""I didn't renew my passport and I don't have jetl ag, but we're in Paris."" The main reason for the authentic French dining experience at Bistro Maison is the authentic French chef -- Jean-Jacques Chatelard, and his delightful wife/hostess, Deborah. Our taste buds delighted at every bite of every course. I don't know where to begin. New Orleans had been the best food experience of my life. Now it is McMinnville -- luckily for me only 2 miles from my home. The ambiance -- you feel like you are in a small French cafe -- and the service -- personal, friendly, efficient -- complete a perfect experience. Amazing, simply amazing. Pros: Food, drink, service, ambiance -- what else is there? Cons: nothing more

A perfect celebration of French meets Oregon! 3/25/2007

How fun it was to find an authentic French Bistro right here in the Valley! The chefs use of sauces combined with a killer white truffle fondue were a perfect celebration of French meets Oregon. Deborah was gracious and accommodating at every turn and made us feel welcome even though there were a dozen other couples seated at the same time. Not pretentious, great portions and an outstanding experience that I would do again. Pros: Great Wine and Martinis to boot! more

A Wonderful Experience! 3/25/2007

What a wonderful experience. We live in Portland but traveled for our date night to this amazing little bistro on a recommendation of friends. We were not disappointed. The service was wonderful and the food was exceptional. The wines that were offered were very reasonable and all around us were wine makers of the valley who were especially charming. The chef came to speak to us after a long night of cooking and showed his passion for the classical French food he so passionately prepared. I would easily have every date night there! Pros: Chef owned and opperated with passion Cons: too far from Portland to visit every day! more

Extremely Rude Owner 3/17/2007

Unfortunately, I had an experience similar to the one described by bistecca on 12/5/06. It?s not worth going into too much detail; let?s just say the owner was NOT happy when one of the guests at my table wanted to send back his entree (it was cold and the flavor was simply not good). Despite soliciting his feedback, it was clear she wasn?t really interested in listening to it. Not only did she argue with him, she actually subjected our entire table to a rather loud and somewhat offensive lecture on French cuisine and her vast experience in New York and Paris. Things got even more uncomfortable later on when she still tried to charge us for the entree. Naturally, my guest didn?t think it was appropriate to be charged for a meal he sent back after two bites and the discussion got heated. Best French Bistro Faire on the West Coast! 12/22/2006

We visited Bistro Maison for lunch during a day of touring local wineries. The food was exceptional (best fondue I've ever had), the service exemplary, and the ambience so relaxing I didn't want to leave. The owners are truly ""hosts,"" making sure everything is just right, down to offering more accompaniments for the fondue when we finished what we had. They have an excellent wine list, both local and French wines, and are happy to offer suggestions for pairing with your meal. I was very pleasantly surprised to find such a wonderful French Bistro in McMinnville, and am looking forward to returning (from Portland) to sample their dinner menu. Thanks for a memorable meal! Incredibly Rude 12/5/2006

Our friends made reservations a month in advance to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. We called to confirm the day of our scheduled reservation, and were told (quite rudely) they didn't have us in the books. Fortunately they were able to accommodate us at the original time. Perhaps the best bistro on the West Coast 9/27/2006

Thank you Deborah and Jean-Jacques for transporting the taste and ambiance of a true Bistro to Oregon. Having dined in many, many, outstanding restaurants in Portland and elsewhere in the Willamette Valley, we can say that without doubt Bistro Maison creates some of the best regional food in the state. The menu and setting define a sense of place that is unuasually appropriate. Staff are knowledgeable and honest in their recommendations. We have visited Bistro Maison many times since the restaurant opened, and have been increasingly pleased with all aspects of each visit. We fear that the secret is now out of the bag, and that soon it will be difficult to reserve our preferred patio table! Pros: simply outstanding in every respect more

Baguettes sanitized for your protection 9/9/2006

We chose this restaurant based on glowing Citysearch reviews, but were disappointed as soon as we arrived for our anniversary. We made reservations in advance and were promptly seated on the patio, but in cheap plastic chairs. To go with it, plastic tablecloths and pine needles in the wine glasses. I know McMinnville isn't Portland, but we were expecting a little more for our average of $23 an entree. The food was so-so as well. I had the duck, which was offered with salad or french fries, as are quite a few entrees... who wants french fries with duck?! My husband had halibut, which was substituted for the sturgeon which they were out of, and said it was bland. The duck taste and presentation were unimpressive as well. Before dinner, we were offered a piece of baguette each, wrapped with a little piece of paper with their logo on a sticker. Chintzy, I thought. As far as good things, the service was attentive and the wine list was pretty good. It was nice to see so many local offerings and to have a waitress who could talk about them. Overall, I'd skip it. Superb Romantic Dinner 8/28/2006

The outdoor garden was wonderful. Great lighting and colorful landscaping, an open yet intimate outdoor dining experience. The service was prompt and attentive. The food was delicious, fresh, and inventive. The appetizers took a bit longer than expected...and we were hungry, due to the lengthy drive from SE Portland, but once the food started arriving it was worth the wait! The wine list was superb, we asked for and got wonderful recommendations for wine to pair with our appetizers and then with our dinner choices. Dessert is a must and was the perfect end to the meal. The only change I would make to our entire dinner would be to forgo the coffee as I prefer a smooth coffee with dessert while the house blend was strong and rather bitter. Worth the drive, reasonably priced, superb wine and scrumptious food, we will definitely be returning. Pros: Ambience, Wine list, Food Cons: Bitter coffee more

French Country Food -by a couple who take food and wine very seriously 6/26/2006

On a recent wine tour of Oregon, we ran across this delightful country bistro. Charmed by the ambiance, we booked a table and were convinced we had been teleported into the French countryside. During a three-day stop in McMinnville, we dined at Bistro Maison four times. (Yes, they are open for lunch.) Pros: I give the place a solid 10 on everything. authentic, delicious French- fabulous service 6/25/2006

My husband and I gave OR wine country a shot. For our ""big evening out"", we decided to go to Bistro Maison. Upon getting there, the simple, ""house"" feel was extremely inviting and quaint. The service, from start to finish was timely and friendly. After complementing the food over and over again, we learned the Chef/owner is a Parisian trained Chef that worked for years in Italy and NY - and his partner/wife has been in the high-end food business her whole career (and studied hospitality in Switzerland!) It was a surreal, delicious experience in McMinville. more

Delicious Food 4/13/2006

This place is a slice of heaven in wine country... a real treat every time I go. The menu, the specials, and the sinful deserts make this restaurant a real gem in Oregon's finest. Great value. Authentic French Bistro in Oregon Wine Country 4/10/2006

Bistro Maison measures up to the standards of New York and Paris, because that's where the owners perfected their crafts. The service is excellent including expert advice on local wines (a reason why the McMinnville location actually does make sense). Chef Jean-Jacques emphasizes fresh local ingredients in his authentic bistro cuisine, from wild mushrooms and salmon to an excellent 2lb. steak (for two). The fondues, pomme frites with (should I say avec?) aioli, incredible sauces, breads, many seasonal special items--all made on site and delicious. I was won over by the onion soup (vegetarian, too). For dessert, try the profiteroles au chocolat. Patio dining in the summer reminds us why we live in Oregon, and Bistro Maison shows us we don't have to give up all of the joys of the city to be here. more

I've been to France several times and the food at Bistro Maison is the real thing. Add to this great knowledgable service and the traditional warmth I've come to expect of the French Bistro environment and you have a dining experience fitting of the Oregon wine country. Oregon's Best French Bistro is in McMinnville 4/9/2006

Hailing from NYC, they really know what they are doing. It has the most adorable and quaint setting inside and out on the patio. The food and menu selections are better than what you can find in famous bistro's of Paris. The service is knowledgeable, attentive, and charming. France in the Oregon's Wine Country 3/3/2006

Just like being in a Michelin starred restaurant in the countryside of France. Chef/owner Jean Jacques is in the kitchen while his wife, Deborah, runs the dining areas. I've been there at least 10 times and every dish is delicious and authentically prepared; from charcuterie to locally grown salad greens and vegetbles, mussels, duck confit, roasted salmon, hanger steak, fresh pomme frites, bouillabaisse, cassoulet, and the best creme caramel I've ever tasted. The ambiance is beautiful, the outdoor patio is gorgeous, and the music is soft. A great dining experience which deserves a 98 overall rating.
