I have read some weird reviews about this place! This is the best breakfast diner anywhere! I drive 30 miles several times a year to eat there. Nice omelet 11/20/2008

Ola! Well on a whim I decided to try this place out. It was Saturday morn and it was busy. But I got lucky and was able to park IFO ( in front of) the place. There was list and a wait of 45 minutes. A couple said they were told 45 mins. too,but waited 20. So we sat in our car and waited. It was a balmy 70, clear skies a bit of wind but a beautiful day. A lot of people decided to not wait. I got impatient at 40 minutes went to ask and they gave me a table on the sidewalk. So I am a happy troop-per. The waiter was very fast nice and reeled off the specials. But I decided against them and my wifey , Andreia, stayed with her mundane pic, LOL. I read the menu and was curious about their 3 egg omelet with country potatoes .sour cream and scones. Wifey had short stack and scrambled eggs ,hard cook. 2.25 for one egg 2.75 for two eggs I told her go for the two. short stack 4.95 My breakfast was 7 or 8.95 ham and cheese omelet . Well whoop my bunda and put me out to dry. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BREAKFAST I have ever. OUTSTANDING. It is cooked ,per the menu ,in a french style. The eggs were creamy to the mouth and cheese was great. Ham was fine not too overwhelming. I always pepper and hot pepper my egg. This time very little. and only a dash of salt. out of habit I think. So I will be back for dinner and lunch. It is worth the wait and I am a impatient person Pros: Excellent food Cons: too popular more

Really good pancakes 10/23/2007

I have to say Bette's makes the best pancakes in town. I had the banana sour cream pancake and it was screaming good. I went there with my 9 months old little boy and he was ready to stick his hands in the plate. Overall, the wait was a little long. But the pancake really made my day. :) Pros: pancakes, pancakes, pancakes Cons: long wait more

GREAT BREAKFAST 6/20/2007

Bette's has fantastic Breakfasts. The Lox and Eggs are fantastic. The portions are a little small and the prices are a little high, but the quality makes up for the negatives. The long lines exist because so many people agree that the food is wonderful. I dislike going to the snooty, corporate 4th Street area, but I'll venture there any morning for Bette's breakfast. Pros: Food quality, funky "old time" diner appearance Cons: Corporate area, difficult parking, slightly high prices, waits more

Slow, boring, cramped but great if you like burnt food 7/31/2006

This place is WAY overrated and should be avoided. Long waits for, at best, mediocre food. Blueberry pancakes were nothing special and burnt. Toast was burnt, polenta that came with daily special was completely charred on the bottom but it was replaced after about 10 minutes of trying to get the attention of a server. Our server was actually very nice but the host made a point of coming to our table to chastise us because we had evidentally heard the wrong name called and were seated when somebody else was supposed to be (which we certainly did not do intentionally) We also had the same thing happen that somebody else has mentioned regarding a beverage brought in from outside. Our friend was given a glass to put his drink in but when he explained that it came from Bette's To Go (right next door), he was allowed to keep it in the plastic cup. GET REAL!! more

Not Going Back There 11/12/2004

For long waits, cramped atmosphere and pretentious policies, Bettes is the place to go. Been there three times: First, not so bad. Second, after waiting thirty minutes to be seated, the waitress spilled a latte on my wool jacket: probably due to overly difficult maneuvering in the cramped interior. All that was offered was an apology and a wet towel. Third, after waiting forty minutes and getting some coffee with my girlfriend at Peets across the street, we were seated. The waiter told us twice to pour the Peets coffee into plain glasses he provided, the reason being we were at Bettes now, not at Peets. We cancelled our order and left. Not going back. Cons: , Cramped, Pretentious more

oldie but goodie 12/13/2002

Breakfast heaven 11/14/2002

If you don't mind schlepping over to Fourth Ave in Berkeley, this is the place to go for breakfast on weekends. Order the Farmer's breakfast - you won't be disappointed. Pros: Bette actually cooks Cons: Hard to park more

Diner with gourmet food 10/16/2002

Bettis Diner on Fourth Street, Berkeley has the best breakfast and lunch. They have taken the diner cuisine to new heights. All food is fresh, fast and perfectly cooked in an atmosphere that hip and cool and accessible to all age groups. Pros: Inexpensive and fast, great fresh food, great diner decor Cons: small more

A Decadent Beginning to the Day 5/12/2002

The souffle pancakes are reason enough to wait for a table, then wait another forty minutes for breakfast. Rich, yet light and fluffy, it's not like any pancake I've ever had anywhere else. The berry-filled and chocolate-chip pancake are equally good. The savory breakfast fareomelets, hash browns, and the likeare well made and very tasty, but for my money nothing comes close to those sweet pancakes. Pros: Great Food, Good Service Cons: Crowded, Cramped, Loud more
