Ben's Place has really good food and a comfortable, friendly, laid-back environment. It is a refreshing change from all the drab chain restaurants in Raleigh. I am mostly vegetari...

Ate here recently. Was seated immediately. Waiter seemed to be high. The waitstaff kept going into the kitchen to laugh loudly about something and we would also hear them gaggi...

Cigarette Odor 2/15/2008

The first thing that hits you when you walk in the door is cigarette odor. I know there is a non-smoking room, but if you want to hear music you are forced into the smoking area. One time I was told one side of the bar was non-smoking and then the next visit it isn't. I have friends who refuse to go to Ben's because of the second hand smoke and heavy cigarette odor. Both the owner's smoke, so I doubt it will ever go non-smoking. Could be a much nicer place without the smoking!!! Pros: awful Cons: cigarette odor more

Should the Hostess Do Homework at Work? 1/16/2008

My husband and I attempted to eat at Ben's Place on a weekday evening. We were ""greeted"" by a hostess who seemed more concerned with completing a homework assignment than seating us. Books and notes were obviously displayed on the reception counter. Hostess could not answer the simple question of how long the wait would be without leaving her station. After 2-3 minutes of waiting for her to return we left. Food could be good, but customer service was poor. Pros: Convenient Cons: Poor customer service; smoking allowed more

Unpredicatable food - NOT VEGETARIAN 9/6/2007

The restaurant bills itself (on this site) as vegetarian. Uninspired salads and cheese fries (without the bacon!) don't make a restaurant vegetarian. Perhaps putting something simple, like sweet potato ravioli alfredo, or roasted vegetable pasta primavera, or grilled tofu on the menu would make the 'vegetarian' label a little more legitimate. The beer selection is decent but the woman walking around is irritating. She interrupted the conversations at our table to obnoxiously welcome us to the restaurant - she needs to work on her timing. Overall, because I only had a salad and cheese fries, I can say the food is just ok. My dinner companions weren't overly impressed, either. The atmosphere is ok. The beer selection is good but nothing to make me overlook the flaws. Pros: Convenient location Cons: Not vegetarian as listed here more

Ben is in need of new bartenders 9/4/2007

Ben's is a GREAT neighborhood bar, but their new bartenders are lacking people skills. Why don't you have your GREAT bartenders, Leslie and Rusty, bartend on trivia night. They are a part of the regular clientele that has been built up at Ben's Place. I love this bar, but if the bar service doesn't get better i will have to spend my time somewhere else. Pros: Food, Location Cons: Customer Service on Trivia Night more

Great Neighborhood Restaurant and Pub 8/21/2007

I have had the pleasure of sampleing just about every item on the menu. And it is all excellent. My favorite is the coffee crusted filet. I am a beef ""purist"" when it comes to steak. So I was a little sceptical....until I tried it. There were so many layers of flavor I almost went into shock! And the herb chicken is my second favorite. I mean, fish tacos (more like burritos) made with Mahi...enough said. Hats off to chef Dan and chef Elliot. The food , in my opinion , is better than several of the more upscale places in Raleigh. Pros: WIde variaty of menu choices. Good selection of wines. Several different draft beers. more

excellent food, customer service and all around atmosphere 7/19/2007

You can't beat the food here especially the seafood. The employees are attentive and friendly. Never had a bad experience. Quick service for lunch which is great when you have limited time. Large and spacious patio-- definitely worth checking out! Pros: quality and variety of food, atmosphere, customer service, parking more

A great place to meet up with friends or to have a great meal 6/28/2007

I first came upon Ben's Place for a birthday gathering. It has a warm family pub-esk atmosphere, a large patio area, well-lit parking, friendly servers, fantastic food and it's clean. Ben's Place is a family-run business with their focus on complete customer satisfaction. Just what I have been looking for, I am happy to report. At this birthday gathering people boasted about every item ordered. I had the tuna which was excellent and the portions are good for the value, the quesadillas were very popular as were the hamburger and the grouper dish. Party of 18 and separate checks? No problem. Party of 18+ with added gratiuty? Not done. Pros: Great food, cold beverages, excellent customer service, parking, good clientele Cons: None found more

Really good or not so much 6/11/2007

My spouse and I have had some great meals at Ben's; but we've had some surprisingly bad meals, too. If you're a real carnivore, the beef is great. However, if you're looking at the lighter fare - beware! The salads - which you would think would be a pretty difficult thing to do poorly - are not worth ordering. Limp lettuce; not very good dressings. Fish is also pretty great, too (except for the fish and chips which were bland and greasy). The (broiled) fish tacos are the best! Pros: Friendly staff Cons: Loud; slow service more

Excellent Food, Great Atmosphere 6/11/2007

When it's my turn to choose the restaurant, I always choose Ben's Place! I go,hoping the Sea Bass is the special for the night, it delights every taste bud in my mouth! If it's not available, no worries, the grouper is excellent. As a matter of fact,I've never heard anyone order anything they didn't like! We love that we can go in jeans, order fresh fish for under $20, or a sandwich for $8. There's something for everyone. The beer is always cold, and you can catch your favorite team on one of the many TV's at the bar. The owners are usually there and just as nice and helpful as they could be. Try it - you won't be disappointed. Pros: Excellent Food, Comfortable Atmosphere, Great Location, Friendly Service more

Good Beer, Nice Atmosphere, Great Service and Delicious Fish Tacos 5/12/2007

I liked this place because the atmosphere was nice, the food was delicious and they had a great selection of beers. I believe the chef went to the Culinary Institute of America, so it wasn't at all surprising that my friends and I loved everything we ordered. Because of this, however, the food is a bit pricier than other pub-like places. They did have two ordering tiers on the menu, though; one side featured pub choices and the other side listed more upscale fare. The pub choices were much more reasonably priced. For example, my fish tacos were $8.00, I believe. Pros: Fresh and delicious food, excellent choices, good service, nice atmoshpere, beer and wine selections and family-friendly Cons: a little pricer than I was hoping for, but it's not so bad if you order off of the pub side of the menu. more
