Editorial review from Citysearch 6/12/2012

I went here today to get a secong opinion on my Manchester Terrier who is 9 years old with a stage 4-5 heart murmur. I walked in there crying hoping someone would help me. I have a California ID and they turned me away. How can you turn someone away when i am showing them a business credit card.to pay with? Do you want Money or not? I went across the street and they made $470.00 .... Im sure they are happy i came in, more

TERRIBLE!!! They have no clue! 1/10/2012

If you want your animal back alive, don't bring it here! Took my animal here for a checkup and they overloaded him with medicine and they didnt even have a diagnosis. he came back a different dog and past away a day later. I would hate to see this happen to anyone else. more

Sad Ending- overpriced services 8/22/2011

Been taking my 2 dogs to this vet hospital for several years now and in the beginning things were good....prices were low staff was pleasant .but, over the past 2 years prices have really went sky high! my older dog began having problems : listless lethargic not eating on evening. i decided that I would take her to this hospital first thing if she didnt improve. the dog was no better in the am so I called this office first thing and the receptionist was really quite rude! After explaining the situation the woman had the nerve to say "" everyone thinks their animal is on deaths door!!"" Well my old girl was... After seeing the vet, the tab started going up: x rays, IVFluids , etc.... Dont get me wrong I would have done anything to save her but after all was over, I took a good look at the charges: $35 for a IV pump just to name one! I didnt buy it ! And 3 hours after entering that office all i left with was a collar and a hugh bill! Plus the cost of cremation brought the total to just under $900! I just feel like we were ""had"" This vet may be good but WAY overpriced! I do think I was somewhat taken advantage of in our hour of need. And with what the receptionist said that sad morning, i dont think i will back. more

Thank You For Loving Our Chihuahua Abby! 3/1/2011

Bay Street Animal Hospital has been a life saver to my girlfriend and me, We have a chihuahua named Abby who is very finicky, like all chihuahuas. But she, in particular, has low self-esteem and very bad panic attacks. She begins to shake uncontrollable and yelp and scratch the door. We have gotten complaints from tenants and calls from the landlord every time she has been left alone. Our original vet was too rough with her, so we switched to Bay Street Animal Hospital. They have been very patient and gentle with her and always know how to relate to her. Recently, a medical emergency forced me to make long-term daily ""babysitting"" arrangements at Bay Street Animal Hospital while I go to work. Abby is the first client in and the last client out everyday. Even though this is on a day by day basis and sometimes my schedule forces Abby to have to stay overnight, the staff has been pleasant, patient and completely understanding. Abby has also adjusted very nicely to being baby-sat. She won't stay with anyone usually, but she walks right over to whichever staff member greets her. There is always a great smile on their faces, and when I walk in late and apologetic, they nonchalantly let it go, making me feel like I am more than a client... I am part of the family. Thank you, Bay Street Animal Hospital. If not for you, I don't know if we would be able to keep our baby, Abby. Rich more

Life-Long Clients 7/28/2010

We (native Staten Islanders -(1955 and 1963) and our pets have been life-long clients of Bay St. Animal Hospital, and have known Drs. Cohen and Cavallaro since they were at Rosebank Vets ? since 1988. They have SHARED our experiences with our pets throughout their lives. Our previous dogs, Honey and Barkley, were very well cared for by the doctors and staff. In addition, our families have been clients as well, with their own pets, for many years. (They still speak glowingly of the relationships.) These vets took the time to offer the best possible treatments, without us spending a fortune on unnecessary surgeries, etc. that would have been so traumatic for our pets. Instead, they helped us to be well-informed pet owners, and were ALWAYS there for us when we needed help or had a question. Especially when it matters most. When each of our dogs became terminally ill, the most important thing they conveyed was the quality of life (for whatever remaining time) and helped us through those awful, awful times. Our first dog Honey (age 11) spared us from ?making the decision?. She passed away on her own, but we were COMFORTED to know that she was under the best of care in their hands (Dr. Cavallaro). When we saw her to say goodbye, she looked very peaceful, tucked in blankets to keep her comfortable. Most of all, we knew that SHE FELT SAFE with them! We received condolence card, and even their own pets comforted us as well! When our second dog Barkley was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma at 12 years of age, we were never pushed into expensive surgeries or treatments, but to give him the best affordable care possible and keep him happy. That was their goal ? NOT the money! When it came time to say ?goodbye?, Dr. Cohen was absolutely wonderful and caring, and so was the staff. We never thought that we could withstand the experience of euthanasia for our pets, but this was a positive experience (if you can call it that). All that mattered was our pet?s comfort and ?easy transition?. Every step was explained to us before and after. They even gave each of us a card with his paw print and a lock of his fur to keep. Now tell me if that does not demonstrate caring!! They were so thoughtful and understanding, and we will never forget that, ever. Now our current shelter dogs Chyna and Jericho (littermates) are patients as well. These dogs have their own ?issues? and are not that easy to work with. Nevertheless, it is ?no big deal? and they receive the care and exams (and grooming) that they need. Although they are not the best patients, any problems are taken into consideration on the pets? individual needs. And they don?t push our pets past their comfort zone, or stress them out. As a result, by now, they are a bit more confident going to the vet/groomer and like the attention they receive. (Even though our pets are still a handful!) WE UNDERSTAND THE FEELINGS OF ALL PET PARENTS. But PLEASE remember that the vets and staff have a difficult job working with patients who can?t tell them what hurts, and their (understandably) upset human families. And in the worst case scenarios, these professionals are extremely affected as well. We know. We have seen it. Could anyone deal with daily heartbreaks such as they endure? I think not. And yet the pull themselves together, and with a deep breath (I?m sure) have to move on to treat the next patients, giving their full concentration. I would HIGHLY recommend Bay Street Animal Hospital to every caring ?pet-parent? and their ?fur-babies? !! more

Example: great place for good bread 3/31/2009

Veterinary Care : Dr. is Good, but they milk you for all they can get. They medicate unnecessarily. the Staff is cold and phony. I don't like that they take your animal in the back and you can't see what they are doing. Then they charge you for tests they said they did, you don't know because they took them in the back. Boarding: I was thinking of boarding my dog there last summer, I asked to see the facility. They didn't want to at first. when I insisted, they left me waiting for about 20 min. (my guess to clean up) when I finally went back there, it smelled, and when I asked about an exercise area she told me they just take them out back to go to the bathroom 3 x's day. I asked to see the outside area. it was so small 6x6 and the concrete had fecal stains on it and urine stains. The girl told me they usually clean that down but they were too busy. The dogs looked bored and depressed. I asked if someone plays with them, she looked at me up & down and replied of course we do. She looked like she herself was overwhelmed, tired, and annoyed. she asked me if I wanted to book a reservation- I said ""No thank You"". I took my dog with me on vacation. The End! Pros: Clean facilities Cons: Very expensive and they milk you, rude and cold. more
