If Steak was a Religion Baxters On Main would be a Cathedral!!! 12/28/2008

I enjoy the perfect filet mignon. In fact I seek the perfect filet mignon in every city I visit. At my age and my occupation I've had quite a few enjoyable steaks in many fine establishments in many cities around the world. Last week I had a good one at Smiths and Wollenskys on 49th and Lexington in New York City. Last night I had a great one at Baxters on Main in Bastrop and the steak and food was as good or better without the Manhattan price and the New York noise. Five Stars Great Place Neat Ambiance Highly Recommended. T for Texas! Pros: Full Bar Friendly Service Great Food more

All stars are for the steaks. 12/7/2008

Okay, we've been there twice. The first time everything was great except for the price was a little high and the comment the Hostess made about ""the big ones can sit on the ends"" meaning the larger people in our group could sit at the ends of the table. \r \r We were celebrating a birthday and for six of us with the tip it was $235+. That included six entries, three apps, six salads and four drinks...not a terrible price but the T-bone is $30...c'mon now. The steaks were very VERY good. We also had the Filet and the Ribeye. I would get the Filet anytime, it 's $24 but delicious and sooo tender and lean. The waitress did not ask me how I wanted it but they fixed it like my husbands...medium rare. One of the things I want in a nice restaurant is good bread and their rolls are terrible. They are little brown and serve rolls. Hey folks...use a local bakery and serve some good bread. The service was good but my tea glass did go dry; they have small glasses.\r \r Then we went back a couple of weeks later...different story. \r \r This time they were out of everything, no baked potatoes, no Blue Marlin, no bread, no corn pudding, and a few other things too. I ordered the Ribeye and it was great, our friend ordered the Special $15 Tilapia and it was good. However...this time a couple of us ordered the Caesar Salad and it was full of lettuce ribs. The waitress said the Chef ""found"" some rolls but they were inedible...it seemed like they were microwaved multiple times to the point of drying out...they are not good anyway, but still we weren't offered a discount for NOT having them. The service was slow/not very attentive. Four of us ordered the asparagus because we only had about three veggie choices and they were the thinnest asparagus I've ever seen. My rice pilaf was very average. The kid in our group ordered the full serving of catfish but she was given the child's plate instead.\r \r Too risky to spend all that $$ again. Though, steaks were VERY good. Pros: Steaks were very well cooked. Cons: Rest of food not up to par with steaks. more

Hidden Treasure in Bastrop 11/10/2008

Baxters on Main is a *fantastic* little restaurant hidden away in the historical district of Bastrop, TX. We happened upon it last Friday night after a local high school football game, simply driving around looking for a ""local"" style eatery. Our party arrived at 9:20 PM after the kitchen had already closed, but Terri the owner persuaded the kitchen to accommodate our last minute four-top. Not only was the food (parmesan crusted snapper, blackened swordfish with mango chutney, filet, ribeye) superb and the wine VERY fairly priced, but the service was impeccable. Our waitress was personal, engaging, yet balanced in her demeanor (not doting, simply attentive). As we left, Terri took a moment to introduce us to the chef, Preston, and allowed us to linger in the bar to finish our wine. Our two visitors from Scotland were quite impressed, and we have every intention of recommending Baxters to our friends in Austin. Pros: Decently priced, great ambience Cons: Maybe hard to find if one's not familiar with Bastrop more

Great looks and style but forget the food quality 10/24/2008

Big city quality, small town charm. 5/24/2007

This place is a real treat to have in my home town of Bastrop. Baxter's has the best of both worlds with the big city quality mixed with the small, historic town charm. I'm addicted to the filet mignon with a glass (or bottle!) of Messina Hoff. And I defy anyone out there to find a better Creme Brulee...anywhere! The absolute best eats in town by a mile! You city dwellers out there don't know what you're missing out here ""in the sticks""! They definitely do it right at Baxter's! Pros: Everything Cons: Occasionally, the kitchen can be a tad slow (but who really cares!) more

Big city eatery and the best of small town atmosphere 2/28/2007

Baxters has the best of big city eatery and the best of small town atmosphere, friendly owners and staff. You can spend an entire evening here and think you just arrived; the restaurant is that good - we have!\r \r My wife and I have been treated like family in the traditional Texas way, then delighted us with our selections. Baxters has always accommodated our hectic lifestyle and our desire to enjoy a meal with friends.\r \r Keep up the great work.\r \r JMT\r Pros: Food, service, staff Cons: Not able to eat there everyday because of my schedule more

A gem in downtown Bastrop 1/24/2006

Having moved to Bastrop a year ago, the lack of a fine dining resturaunt was always a problem. We discovered Baxter's by word of mouth and gave it a try. The owner, Terri Knop greeted us at our table, and the wait staff was super. Food was wonderful, as was the choices of entrees and wine. It has truly become my favorite in town. The prices are very good for the quality of food and service as well. Pros: value, presentation of food, service more

Great Food and Lively Spirit 5/5/2004

Passing through Bastrop, Texas I decided to stop in at a recommended Baxter's restaurant. I enjoyed a grilled chicken breast pasted with a heavenly pecan sauce that I see in my dreams at night. I also had the honor of tasting their margarita cheesecake. Bravo!!! 2 Thumbs up!!! Pros: Atmosphere, Entrees, Beautiful People more
