I rarely complain about things, but my last experience at this restaurant deserves comment. \r \r First I have been to this restaurant many times over the last 20 years and have usually had a decent experience. This is not a fine dining restaurant so you expect less than perfection, but the quality of the food served was bad. \r \r First they brought out a burned loaf of bread, come on now for and $80 dinner for two that just is not acceptable. To make it right, they just cut off the burned part and brought half a loaf back to the table....too funny.\r \r The salad bar was not fresh and they use vegetable oil for dressing rather than Olive Oil....\r \r When the food finally came out, I had ordered a steak done medium well, I think the poor sucker is still bleeding. It also had a grease fire taste to it, you know when the grease flares up on the grille and burns the meat?\r \r My wifes lobster was fishy tasting again too.\r \r I will say the staff is friendly and helpful, but my stomach is still telling me this food was bad!!\r \r Now I know it was a quite night, but if you are open and serving food, you should still put your best product out there!!! I have been to this restaurant several times and have never been dissapointed. Everything and I do mean everything is good. Last time I was there I tried the BBQ. ribs. The best I ever had. These are very meaty and it looks like the finish them off on the grill. Deffinately worth trying. My wife loves the prime rib, very good also. A great family restaurant with great family values. more

The service was not good. Drinks came extremely late and servers needed to be reminded that we ordered them. My steak was cold and it didn't come with the side that I ordered. Server had a very bad attitude and got frustrated when we reminded her to bring us what we had ordered. All in all, I will never eat here again. The food was NOT worth the price at all and the service was lacking. more

I am from out of town and everytime i come to Gurnee I have to stop at the Backyard Steak Pit. I personally love the filet mignon. They also have good seafood. Also, the service is great and it is a quiet atomosphere. The salad bar is good but I would much rather have it served to my table. Otherwise, I love everything else. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. Not only was the food very overpriced, but also the service was lacking... in personality, timeliness, and so much more. Upon arrival, we asked that our friend who was celebrating a birthday be surprised with a small treat. After a very disappointing meal, which included mashed potatoes, if I'm not mistaken, made from a box, a pathetic salad bar (3.75 extra) with browning iceberg lettuce and a disappointing selection of menu choices. For the price of our entrees, you'd expect the food must be amazing. The meat was fatty and my husband?s prime rib was lukewarm. Not to mention the fact that in addition to it all, apparently children?s meals do not include drinks. A price of 2.50 per child-sized lemonade was added. I ordered a martini, which was so awful I handed it over to my husband to choke down. And, in the end... no birthday surprise was ever brought to our table. \r \r After approaching the man who said that the birthday surprise would be taken care of, there was only speechlessness. Not even an apology. No attempt to make a mends. That was the first and last time we will ever visit Backyard Steak Pit. We used to drive by and say look at that shady place, joking about eating there, sometime. Now our minds will always be branded with the disappointment we experienced there this evening. $130 later we are slightly full, left without desert, and very bitter. I want everyone to know what a horrible experience this will be if you consider, price, quality of food, and service important aspects of a good dining experience. \r Pros: always parking... aparently everyone else knows not to go back, either! I live in Gurnee, the land of chain restaurants. Unlike them, Backyard Steak Pit has become my favorite local, privately-owned establishment. It is quiet, warm and cozy. The steaks are grilled on a large, open indoor grill for great smoky flavor. The cuts are generous, juicy, and flavorful. You can also order a skewer of 4 jumbo scallops which are quite delicious off the grill either as a side or an entree. Dinners include unlimited trips to their fresh salad bar. Unlike some other private steak houses in Gurnee, this place is not overly-ambitious nor over-priced. It's like a private little club off Grand Avenue, where the service is always friendly and approachable, the cocktails (martinis and wine choices are quite good), and I'm always happy to bring an out-of-town guest to this place for a delicious steak dinner.
