Best

A friend/neighbor of mine gave me a gift card for Xmas. My daughter, husband and myself went there for lunch, and it was amazing. I'm drolling just thinking about it.

Worst

This is a great restaurant in appearance. The food was really nice as well. Unfortunately, this is the type of place where the waiter looks down at you if you don't order an app...

Bad Restaurant 1/1/2003

After reading the reviews from Citysearch, I was very disappointed when we tried this restaurant. The portions were small, the food tasted microwaved. Our meat was undercooked. We were seated in the middle of a dining area where we were apparently invisible as we couldn't even get a waiters attention. Very disappointing as we felt we must have made the wrong turn and ended up in a different restaurant. Would not recommend to anyone as we feel it is overrated. Pros: Location Cons: waiters, food, atmosphere more

Love this place! 11/19/2002

Consistently good food (especially the pecan-crusted chicken and red corn enchiladas); down-to-earth service; lovely patio; warm & cozy interior. The only downsides in my view are the parking (the slow valets are the only real option) and the desserts, which are disappointing when compared to Backstreet's fabulous starters and entrees. Pros: Cozy atmosphere, Menu, Great wine list Cons: Parking more

Houston's Best Date Place 10/3/2002

What can I say? Hands down the Backstreet Cafe is one of the best, most romantic restaurants in the city. The patio is comfortable and elegant. Houston's climate and space heaters in the winter make it accessible year round. Entrees include a variety of classic American cusine served up in massive portions. The creme brulee is the best I've ever tasted! Pros: Valet parking, Romantic Cons: parking nightmare more

One of my favorites 9/24/2002

Huge wine list. Pork chops. Great desserts. Jazz brunch on Sundays. The service is superb. more

Bring back the soup! 9/19/2002

My lunch date and I had our hearts set on the smoked chicken tortilla soup. I am sad to report our hearts were broken. The menu had changed. I went to my second choice...pope's hats. Gone! Well the grilled chicken salad was always a hit. Changed! I made the mistake of ordering the stew. It was served with a fork. Need I say more? This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. I won't be returning until the old menu does. Pros: Bread, Back patio Cons: No tortilla soup, No pope's hats more

Pretty in Houston 9/16/2002

Such a nice little place right in the middle of the street. It was lovely to sit outside feel like you are in the country. The crab cakes were lushious. Such a nice place more

Highly Recommend! 7/24/2002

We love Backstreet Cafe, it's very relaxing and the food is delicious. The only con is the parking situation - you have to valet and they are somewhat careless Pros: amazing food, comfortable, relaxing, attentive service Cons: parking more

A true delight! 5/28/2002

Myself and four friends thoroughly enjoyed the food, the service, and the atmosphere of the courtyard. Brian, our waiter, was extremely knowledgeable about wines, desserts and the menu items. We will definitely be back. Pros: Great food, Good value, Nice atmosphere Cons: Valet parking only, Single bathroom more

WONDERFUL 5/21/2002

Back Street cafe is my favorite restaurant in Houston. The atmosphere is what you make of it- friendly, casual even romantic if you'd like it to be. They have the best food (dinner or brunch) and the waitstaff is always overly helpful and charming. Definitely try Back Street! more
