Best

A friend/neighbor of mine gave me a gift card for Xmas. My daughter, husband and myself went there for lunch, and it was amazing. I'm drolling just thinking about it.

Worst

This is a great restaurant in appearance. The food was really nice as well. Unfortunately, this is the type of place where the waiter looks down at you if you don't order an app...

If the weather's nice, make sure to sit on the back patio. The cocktails are seasonal and the vegetarian options are some of the best. more

overpriced and dropping quality 3/1/2011

This use to be one of my favorite spot in houston to take friends out. After spending a year living and traveling in europe, I come back to the city and find very obvious change in the chef of the restaurant. The menu is tremendously overpriced. There is loss of originality of the culinary art. Make no mistake, this is a glorified tex-mex serving huge portion in a rich neighborhood in Houston. more

Be prepared to wait... 10/31/2010

Happened to bring some close friends who were visiting town and needed a good breakfast/brunch spot. We wanted to sit out on the patio but it would have been an ""hour to two hour wait."" It took some time to get our tables situated in the upstairs area. The decor was good... however, it was extremely cold throughout where we were seated, which was the creaky attic smelling ""upstairs."" Our server took too long just to take our order, check-backs were non existent as our food took at least over 20 minutes. Once it came out, some of us sat without water refills as our pitcher of mimosas barely had enough to get around to everyone with more than two gulps. Understaffed for the day, possibly. Overbooked for the day...definitely! We will most likely never return with a large party for some time to come. Oh, and the food is nothing worth bragging about. It's too saucy and not innovative at all. I go here several times for their brunch and order something different... but what I've come to find out is that their dishes are basically the same thing, just different presentations. more

For Crab Cake! 6/7/2010

I wish we would have reviewed this immediately, but totally forgot. We had a good experience with a very attentive and knowledgeable wait staff. The only draw back was we were the only table in a room with 1 very large party of some sort of work meeting next to us. They were very loud and in such a small room, it was very distracting. \r \r Aside from that, the crab cake was perfect, the salmon special was delish and they modified it to make me happy. Michael had the meat loaf, I remember it being good, but probably not a must have as we were told. All in all in was a great experience, and yes, we will definately go back and recommend you check it out! I will update this review the next time so I can be more thorough. Pros: crab cake, atmosphere, location Cons: the table next to us was annoying more

Quaint Cafe 1/19/2010

Been here a few times over the years, finally got around to reviewing it. I keep coming back because the food is consistently good and I love the atmosphere. It is a charming cafe with a lovely patio area, great place for a date or family gatherings. My husband loves it because they have good wines.\r \r Speaking (or writing rather) of families, they do have a decent kids menu with approximately 10 food items to choose from.\r \r Service is always excellent here, everyone's friendly and attentive. My only complaint would be parking. The limited parking area they have is strictly for valet. You can park on the street a block away but watch out for the parking signs. Pros: Good food and good wine Cons: Parking more

Everything's Perfect! 11/30/2009

Well after living in Houston for 5 years and discovering Backstreet pretty early on I can say its fantastic. I've never had a bad experience and my wife and I have been close to 30 times. The food is delicious, seared scallops always perfect, chicken milanese is a hit with the macaroni and cheese fans. The wine list is great with thier wine/beer of the month. The desserts are top notch to (pumkin doughnuts). We tell all of our friends there and when visitors come to town we dine there as well. I think it gives you the biggest bang for your buck. Pros: food, wine, service more

Amazing Saturday Brunch 10/24/2009

Great outdoor sitting area. Spinach souffle was delicious! Our server was professional and attentive as well. Pros: cozy outdoor sitting area Cons: only offer a few wine by the glass more

Just perfect 7/12/2009

This was my 2nd time to Backstreet and it was amazing once again. The crab cakes are the best I have ever had. Service was excellent and the price was very reasonable for the quality of the food. Thanks for the great night out! Pros: Unique ambience, incredible food Cons: little parking, must valet more

OMG! 8/6/2008

Oh my god where do I begin???? First of all the restaurant is incredibly cute. The food is sooooo good and the service is even better. Our waiter, I think his name was Jose, was very knowledgable and answered all of my questions about the menu and the wine. The food runners were also very nice and the bartendar made my sister an incredible drink. Before I left I made reservations to bring my father back for his birthday. Highly recommended and we can't wait to go back. Pros: Everything Cons: Absolutely nothing more

Wonderful experience 7/20/2008

I went to Backstreet for my birthday dinner with my family and boyfriend. We showed up a few minuted after our reservation time and we were still seated promptly. The waitress was very nice and extremely helpful in helping us decide what to order. The menu was great and they have a huge wine list. We ordered the crab cakes and salmon tacos as appetizers and they were both excellent. I got the fettucine pasta as an entree which was amazing and everyone else loved their food too. My boyfriend had bought cupcakes from Crave and the waitress brought them out on a nice platter that said ""Happy Birthday"" on it. Then the manager brought me a complimentary drink. The only complaint I have is that it was a little noisy but we were upstairs where a few other large groups were. But really, everything else was so wonderful that I can't complain. There is also free valet service which is nice because there's nowhere to park around the restaurant. more

EXCESSIVELY LOUD for Sunday brunch 7/14/2008

No more Sunday brunch here -- TOO LOUD!!! Although I have been a fan of Backstreet Cafe for years, I will definitely think twice before venturing there again for Sunday brunch. Our visit this past Sunday (12:30 reservation for 7) was undoubtedly the LOUDEST dining experience imaginable. We requested indoor seating, and were subsequently directed to the normally quiet and pleasant upstairs rooms. As soon as we entered the front door, the noise was overwhelming, and increased as we headed up the stairs (reminiscent of a very packed and joyous happy hour). Upon being seated, we found that we literally had to SHOUT to communicate across the table. Any attempts at conversation were useless. The rauccous table of 6 next to us was yelling (literally), and their frequent outbursts would jolt you out of your chair. Our waiter seemed to add to the furor, as each visit from him resulted in additional loud yelling and laughing. Increased noise level when the place is packed (which it was) is expected, but it made for a very unpleasant experience. The food was fine, as always, but be warned that one should be in the mood for shouting out their lunch conversation. Pros: Good food Cons: LOUD!!! more

Fine meal and even finer service. 6/20/2008

Innovative and very tasty treatment of home favorites, excellent service, helpful waiters, large variety of wine choices. Set in a rambling but cozy, well-decorated old house. Went on a rainy night, so the patio wasn't in use, but it looked like a nice garden setting I'd like to try out. Reasonable prices - so you leave feeling satisfied and not broke! My fussy husband, who hates to valet park, really enjoyed the food, so we will be back. Pros: Innovative seasoning equates to simple, but fine tasting, food , superlative service Cons: Traffic congestion and limited parking more

Great Local restaurant that would be great for out of Town Guests 3/17/2008

My wife and I have eaten at backstreet for Sunday brunch on a number of occassions and we have always had an enjoyable meal on the patio with great service. We recently had the opportunity to go for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't feel like drinking an entire bottle of wine so we tried Managers recommendation and it was just what we were looking for. The meal was great and the service was better. Pros: Great Atmosphere for a Quiet Meal more

Consistently Great Food 1/9/2008

At the end of December, my boyfriend and I dined here on a Friday night. He was hesitant about going for very silly reasons, but I persuaded him nonetheless since it's one of my favorite spots in Houston. He ordered one of the popular chicken dishes, and I had a pasta dish. We both licked our plates clean, especially him!. I can't recall the wine, but it was fabulous--as was our waitress (Lauren I think is her name). She was delightful and knew the menu extensively. Can't wait to dine here again.\r \r Pros: Excellent food, Well-tuned service, Romantic, Varied Wine List Cons: Parking is limited to valet only more

One of my favorite places in Houston! 1/5/2008

I've been going here long before they remodeled, and it's always been outstanding. The pecan crusted chicken is the best! Great location, great patio, good service, just a great place to dine with friends! Pros: Location, patio, food!!! Cons: only offer valet parking more
