BAM Rose Cinemas

This is probably the best place to see movies in Brooklyn. It is within the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and centrally located just off Flatbush Ave. in downtown Brooklyn. There are a few theaters and usually a great selection of films - not necessarily the Hollywood blockbusters, but the best in U.S. and international cinema. In addition to showing new releases, they have curated series of films by directors or from a certain country, film festivals, and special screenings of independent films. I especially like the fact that the Rose Cinema tends to attract serious movie viewers - you will rarely hear cell phones going off or people chatting during the films. This is by far the best movie theatre in Brooklyn. The movie selection is comparable to that of The Angelika, The Landmark Sunshine and Lincoln Plaza Theatres in Manhattan. The seating is comfortable and the four screen auditoriums are rarely overcrowded. If you have some time before a show, I suggest the 3 course $21 prix fixe Dinner and a Movie menu at the BAM Cafe upstairs (available with a ticket stub for that day). The food is really quite good and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Becoming a BAM Cinema Club member can save you money on tickets, but it is a bit pricey (although it is tax deductible). more
