There is a lot of bad press out there about Oakland but sitting either inside our outside of ""B"" you will wonder what it is all about. Great food, company and service.

best waiter ever! 10/30/2008

I frequent this area often and Leonard at B is my favorite server down there. He is always spot on with his suggestions and will even try to accommodate my co workers special diets. The pork chop here is so good. Their take on pizza is really interesting. I love the way the cold mixed greens and warm dough combine to make for refreshing twist on a classic. The outdoor patio area is great during the summer months. If you haven't been to the old Oakland area, do yourself a favor and check it out. Pros: Great service, outdoor seating Cons: smaller, hard to fit large parties more

Wow 4/1/2008

I am rarely wowed by restaurants. Many are very good, but not wowed. B hlt a home run. We had the seared scallops as an appetizer, and they were wonderful. The brined pork chop was the best pork chop I have ever eaten. Two inches thick and every bite was juicy. We also had the roast quail, which was very good, but not as absolutely wonderful as the pork chop. The portion size was very good. Finished with the chocolate mousse with pumpkin seed brittle, and I am looking for the words to describe this dessert. ""Out of this world"" and ""Nervana"" seem trite, but only begin to describe it. When I'm in Oakland, B is my new spot. Pros: The Food, The Service more

b deserves an a+ 3/3/2008

i heard of b through friends who had been to the SF location. so i got a group of my boyfriends together on a friday night and headed out for some dinner and drinks. we got to b right as dinner was getting into full swing..and were seated in a few minutes..our hostess (misty, i think) recommended we try the love on and the don riley, two of their specialty drinks..one was deliciously sweet, raspberry vodka and champagne, and the other a more subdued lemony tart iced tea concoction...the drinks were fantastic, and let me tell you friends, i know my drinks...we were greeted promptly by our fantastically gay waiter leonard...the menu was amazing!! tons of starters to share..we ordered mussels in pernod, with fennel and shallots, delicious veal meatballs that came in an unexpected roasted red pepper sauce, and the spinach salad with pancetta vinegrette, and smoked salmon salad with mache, and citrus creme fraich, all recommended by our waiter...did i mention he's a hottie too? the food was complex yet simple, rich and yet sublime...the first course was a knockout, so we ordered a bottle of wine...if you don't try the lemelson pinot noir, you are a fool! the restaurant was full, and the energy was amazing..entrees ordered were a meaty and firm swordfish with an arugula smashed potato and a citrus dressing of some sort, a beer braised shortrib that melted in your mouth finished with cranberry and orange gastrique, and one of the most delicious and fresh tasting broccoli rabe and ricotta cheese pizzas..light, crisp, and piping hot..the crowd was mostly young, hip thirty somethings, but there wasn't a pretentious vibe at all..the servers were calm and collected in the middle of a busy friday night..top notch service, amazing, well crafted food, great ambience, and an eye opening new view of what oakland has to offer..i was surprised to find the owners disguised as the hostess and pizza guy ( which is so cool) and can't wait to have another night at b!! i give them an a+ Pros: great service, amazingly well crafted entrees, cool, fun atmosphere Cons: can't think of a single one, everything was great more

Great Place to Eat 2/13/2008

Finally a place in Oakland that I like. the food is always delicious. If you are tired of shuffling over to the city on weeknight just to get a decent (unfried) meal then let me welcome you to the best of Old Oakland. The food and drinks here are delicious, I especially like the ""Love On"" with its delicious blend of champagne and vodka and raspberry puree. more

Overrated, overrated, overrated 8/1/2007

I work in downtown Oakland, and was excited to try this place - the space & location is great, and they have an outside dining area that looked appealing. I've been here on several occasions over the past 8 months, going for team lunches or business meetings, and this review is based on the multiple visits I've made. \r \r The service is slow - even when you make an exception for the fact that there are 5-6 people in your party which might take longer than 2, it's ridiculously slow. The waiter doesn't write down your order (probably to maintain some level of ambience), then forgets half of the things. We had to remind him of what we ordered (drinks!), ask for water to be re-filled, asked for bread to be brought to the table, ask for the check....\r \r The food is mediocre - you'd be better off foregoing the atmosphere for one of the Vietnamese or Thai places nearby, which have better food. The last time I was there, I ordered a grilled sandwich, which arrived cold and somewhat soggy. Our food took nearly 30 minutes to arrive AFTER the appetizers came out (we all ordered sandwiches and one person ordered pizza). I think I'm done with this place - I've given it the benefit of the doubt for too long, and I'm ready to support the mom & pop restaurants in the area instead. Pros: good space & ambience for business lunches Cons: terrible service, mediocre food more

Over-Priced and Under-Portioned 6/20/2007

""B"" provided a disappointing experience. The small space had a noise level that was deafening, making conversation impossible. Our cheery but inattentive server was rarely seen, never offering to refrresh our drinks or offer the cracked pepper she carried with her. Our meal started with a plate of four slices of bread sliced so thin they crumbled when picked up. A scant tablespoon of olive oil was included. Our appetizers and entrees were well executed but ridiculously tiny. We paid the outrageous bill and left the space still hungry! Pros: Food is well executed Cons: Over-priced and under-portioned more
