I really love Bronson Methodist Birthplace! The place itself is so high tech, yet friendly and inviting. The women working there are so sweet and very experienced. I suffered from...

become an inpatient 7/23/2012

If you go to there ER, make sure you get admitted. Your insurance will cover that. But if you go in like I did with a severed thumb, one physician did the work, the on call doctor came in, took a look at it, told the attending physician to cauterize the thumb to stop the bleeding then left the room. Received my bill. Almost $300.00 went to the physician that looked at my hand, made the comment and walked out of the room. A total of 3 minutes. Then I received an EOB of $300.00 for the advise. Had I been admitted, there would have been no charge. What a terrible ripoff. They considered my visit an outpatient and Bronson stands by the bill, and says I must pay. Stub your toe, and ask to be admitted. It will be cheaper in the long run. When did an ER visit become an office visit? more

bronson birthing center 10/14/2010

I wouldn't recommend having a baby anywhere else. If something goes wrong at a nearby hospital, they're going to send you to Bronson, so that should really tell you something. If something goes terribly wrong with your baby and you're at another hospital, they don't always immediately let you go with your baby to Bronson. Even in life and death situations. So, why go anywhere else? They do have an amazing birthing center. Very spacious and open. The food is decent. The nurses are usually pretty friendly. Some of them are really amazing people. I wish I could review individual parts of the hospital on here, because I've had seven children. Six were born in Bronson. I recommend them highly in this area. In other areas of the hospital, not so highly. BUT... They have changed the way they give meds, so I know they are always trying to improve their mistakes, and there is a lot to be said for that. more

IT'S THE BEST! 2/12/2007

VERY CLEAN, PRIVATE ROOMS, WONDERFUL NURSES AND VERY GOOD FOOD. THE DOCTORS WERE ALL VERY GOOD AND TOOK EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLAIN THINGS TO YOU. IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, THIS IS THE ONE!! THE ONLY BAD COMMENT I HAVE IS THAT SOME OF THE EMPLOYEES WORE STRONG PERFUME OR COLOGNE. NOT GOOD WHEN YOU HAVE A BREATHING PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH. MY NURSES WERE VERY PROTECTIVE OF ME IF SOMEONE CAME IN WITH A STRONG SCENT ON THEM!! JACKIE P. more

Nice nurses, adequate care 8/1/2006

I'm sure my star rating for this hospital would be lower if I had not been unfortunate enough to also experience U of M hospital. But, since I have something to compare it to, the rating goes up considerably. I was hospitalized at Bronson Hospital in the short term care unit for 7 days due to abdominal blood clots. I was in an extreme amount of pain (I equate the pain with labor) and it took a while to convince the nurses of this. But, once they understood that I am pretty good at hiding my pain, they started taking me seriously. They were pretty good at answering the call button within 15 minutes or so. The vast majority of them were caring and compassionate. The nurse I had on my last day was absolutely wonderful. I was being transferred to another hospital and she worked hard to get me a private room so I could keep my baby and husband with me at night. She also made arrangements with her sister (who lives in the are of the other hospital) to allow my family to stay in her home! Talk about going above and beyond- we were basically strangers to her. I will always be grateful to her for that! The doctors and specialists at Bronson suffer from lack of communication. None of them seemed to confer with one another, so they often gave me conflicting information. Unfortunately, this seems to be common in most hospitals. The rooms at Bronson are very nice, clean, bright, and homey feeling. All of the rooms are private, which is a major plus! The food service is great. They give the patients a menu that they can order from at any time they wish between 7am-7pm. The food is okay, not great, but not terrible. You may be wondering how I know since I was sick. Unfortunately, I am a person that has almost never been sick enough not to be able to eat! When I was transported to other parts of the hospital for testing, I was always transported in comfort, on a gurney, and brought back to the room quickly afterward. I didn't realize this was a special thing until I went to another hospital that did things quite differently. All in all, this was a nice hospital to be in, if you have to be in a hospital. Of course, we would all rather be at home! more

Top notch care! 8/19/2005

Bronson Methodist Hospital gives the best care anywear! I have been in this hospital on two occasions. On both occasions I received top notch care from both the physicians and the nurses. The nursing staff is very friendly and were always there to help with anything I needed. I even loved the food there! That's saying something when even the hospitals food is fantastic. I couldn't have asked for better care and highly recommend this hospital to everyone I know. more

  • Bronson Methodist Hospital, located at 601 John St. in downtown Kalamazoo, Mich., is the flagship of Bronson Healthcare Group, a not-for-profit healthcare system serving all of southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. With 404 licensed beds and all private rooms, Bronson Methodist Hospital provides care in virtually every specialty-cardiology, orthopedics, surgery, emergency medicine, neurology, oncology-with advanced capabilities in critical care as a Level I Trauma Center; in neurological care as a Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Center; in cardiac care as the region's first accredited Chest Pain Emergency Center; in obstetrics as the leading BirthPlace and only high-risk pregnancy center in southwest Michigan, and in pediatrics as one of only four children's hospitals in the state. The hospital has been recognized for many quality achievements including the 2005 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation's highest presidential honor for quality and organizational performance excellence.

In 2000, Bronson completely redeveloped the hospital campus and has since become a best practice site for hospital design. Literally hundreds of healthcare professionals and architects from across the US and overseas have toured and studied the hospital, and we have had the privilege to strongly influence future hospital design.

A unique feature of inpatient services is that all patient rooms are private. Studies by Bronson and others have proven that private rooms contribute to a reduction in the incidence of hospital- acquired infections. With complete privacy, patients are also able to rest without the distractions of a roommate, can spend more time with family, and can speak freely when using the phone and when discussing their personal situation with doctors and nurses.

Today, patients who stay in the hospital tend to be more acutely ill than they were in the past. Bronson has more critical care rooms, and the larger general patient rooms can become critical care rooms if a patient's circumstances change. Even smaller touches such as light-filtering blinds, phones on side rails that are easy to reach and use, and larger buttons on phones and other communications equipment add to the overall ease and comfort of the hospital stay. Patient wear has also been upgraded to include robes, pajama pants and more comfortably fitting gowns

The atmosphere within hospitals has changed dramatically over the years as the understanding of healing environments has grown. In designing this facility, we incorporated those elements that are scientifically proven to improve healing. Space, light, color and nature all play a role.

Art is also an important component of the healing environment. There is a mix of rotating and permanent artwork, created by local artists, displayed throughout the hospital. One of the more unique works is in Bronson Children's Hospital, where murals bring to life a whimsical "Explore Michigan" theme.
