Editorial review from Citysearch 12/13/2012

We used Animal Care Unlimited for our pets for about 6 months because they are located conveniently and advertise emergency services. They saw our ferret and our cockatiel.\r When I called to schedule an initial visit for the bird, they quoted me $50. We went, they manhandled our rescued bird roughly by the tail, and then announced they wanted to do $300 in tests on him. They treated us poorly for feeding him seed at the time since he was starving himself rather than eat pellets and offered no advice to help with the transition. When our cockatiel had an accident and needed emergency care, they turned him away because ""the on call vet doesn't do birds"" and sent us across town.\r Initially, I was far happier with their ferret care. The initial visit was as quoted and they boarded for a reasonable price, although he came back unused to his litterbox, which they assured me they would use. Last week, I arrived home to find him having made a jailbreak and laying, unconscious, halfway between the bars of his cage. I immediately rushed him around the corner to AUC. They performed x-rays and put him in an incubator on oxygen. When I went home to get food for his overnight, the vet called to inform me that he had passed. I was hysterical and my husband went to make arrangements. The office staff offered no sympathy and were rude to him when he requested an itemized bill. They charged us $200 for a half hour of care! My husband told them they need to straighten out their customer service and to delete the bird from their files. We will not be going there again.\r I have spoken to several other people who have had similar issues with this office, including one person who was charged $3000 after authorizing $200 for care of an elderly pet. more

Not pleased 9/27/2011

I haven't been there in over a year so it's possible things have changed but I was generally displeased with this practice for a number of reasons. Some of the staff is friendly but I also got rude treatment on more than one occasion (one tech brusquely informed me that handling my crying but non-aggressive dog was ""really stressful."") I did give them two stars because they once saved his life. However, without going into specifics, the next vet I went to questioned the advice and treatment regimen they were providing (my dog is epileptic.) As his condition has improved dramatically since I switched and I've learned a lot since then, I'm unfortunately inclined to agree. As they didn't keep his meds in stock despite having other epileptic animals, I had to always call to reorder and since they only ordered on Mondays (which seems bizarre for a practice with several vets), I had to call sometimes two weeks in advance. The final straw for me was when I was spoken to rudely by one of the vets. They do have several vets and extended hours so if you have an animal without any medical conditions and only need to go once or twice a year, then I think maybe you'd be fine here if those are your primary criteria. pros: multiple vets, extended hours, will price match online prices for flea meds, will see exotic animals cons: staff can be rude, you really need to be on top of your animal's treatment and ordering of any medications, all things considered I would not take any animals I might have there in the future more

The Best! 9/30/2010

We have been going to ACU since we arrived in Columbus in 1996. The compassion and care our pets have received has been excellent. Dr. Burton is a wonderful and insightful vet. I can count on Dr Jodi Smith to care for our 2 german shepherds. We also have 2 cats and ACU has ALWAYS been available when ever there was an emergency. When we lost our shepherd, husky mix, I could not have asked for a more compassionate team of people who grieved with us and was just wonderful. We consider ACU an extended part of our family. From the folks from the front desk, the technitions, the boarding facilities and the vets I give these folks a two thumbs up! Expensive, but I know these people and they know us and we are always well cared for!! more

Great for Sugar Gliders 8/11/2007

Dr. Burton sure knows his way when it comes to sugar gliders. It is so hard to find an exotic animal vet that really does. They were gentle and insightful. Pros: Won't get a better exotic animal vet Cons: More on the pricey side more

Good, but expensive 11/24/2005

This doctor and his fellow vets specialize in exotic animals ranging from parrots to lizards. He is very aware of how fragile birds are and likes yearly check ups with blood work. Another vet arrived in the middle of the night for an emergancy call about my bird. She worked hard, but was unable to save him. She sent me a nice card afterwards. The vets are also good with cats and dogs. It is expensive to go here, but if you need the specialized care it is worth it. more
