We have had good success with Amvets. 5/24/2012

We have had good success with Amvets. The only time they were unable to pick up what we left was on a very rainy day with severe weather, and they told us they would call us before the next pickup day, which they did. more

Terrible 4/25/2012

Amvets always calls asking for donations. Finally we had something to give and my husband called them to schedule a pick up for some furniture. Two heavy couches and a wing back chair. They were old...they were worn...but they were not nasty dirty or structurally unsound. They did not tell us there were specific requirements for picking up furniture...like absolutely no stains or tears. (We did have a tear on the zippered cover of a cushion...not the cushion itself. and the couches and chair had a few stains that we probably could have gotten out had we known about the requirements) . We hauled our heavy furniture outside (no easy feat for us) and when the truck finally showed up they refused it. So we had to haul it back in the garage where it sits. I called to complain about the lack of communication and I was hung up on. I called again and spoke to a manager who at least was gracious in her apology, but they will not pick these items up. So until we figure something else out, we're stuck with them. I do NOT appreciate being hung up on, and I don't appreciate not being told what to expect prior to the pick up. It would have saved us time and a couple of bruised shins and sore backs. more

ENOUGH 11/24/2011

I understand that AMVETS and others serve a good cause, but the frequency of calls for donations is ridiculous!. I had my new phone less than 24 hours when I first started getting calls. They knew my name, so the cable company must've sold subscriber lists to solicitors.. anyway, they call at least once a week if not twice. Combined with other charities, my phone rings every day sometimes multiple times. I have nothing to give! Please stop! I gave once, they never picked up..... I ended up taking the boxes to goodwill three days later. more

Beware of Amvets! 11/24/2011

Amvets called ME to ask for anything I could give. They emphasized that they would take any castoffs. I agreed to leave a donation. The day before the pickup they called again to remind me, and I asked if they picked up mattresses and box springs. They said ""yes."" I had just purchased a new mattress set and needed to get rid of an old one--so I dragged the old set to the front porch and left it with other donation items. When I got home that afternoon they had taken everything EXCEPT the mattress set. They left a note saying that they would not take ""torn or stained"" mattresses. Well, there were NO tears or stains on the mattress or box spring. There was evidence of wear on the bottom of the box spring--but no tear. I called and complained. It was 3:00PM. I won't go into what I said, but they said that the truck could not return for two days. Since my new mattress set was being delivered in two days, I told them to forget it. It is easier to pay the store delivery service an extra $20 to pick up the mattress than to ever deal with Amvets again. Not worth the effort. more

Lack of communication 4/13/2011

After MANY calls over the years I finally said ""Yes"" to a request to a 'pick up' donation. I usually drop off donations myself but health issues prompted my decision. I was told the truck would come on Tuesday and someone would call on Monday to confirm. No call came on Monday & no answer to my calls to confirm. I placed the boxes on the porch because I didn't want their trip to be wasted in case they did show up . No one came. I called on Tuesday afternoon--no answer. I tried another local number and left msg on a recorder. No response. On Wed I tried another local number--finally made contact; was told they called on Mon but no answer. (If I'm not home, a care giver is.)(An ans mach answers after 4 rings.) Now I'm told the truck will make the pick up tomorrow--Thursday. ----we'll see....... more

Bad communication 3/25/2009

A person calls one week asking for a donation and scheduling a pick-up date. The evening before that scheduled date another person calls with a reminder. I sort through things and fill up a large trash bag full of clothes, books, etc..., set it on my porch at 7am with AMVETS written on it. I come home from work this evening and it's still setting there. So, I call Amvets----- and find out they weren't picking up in my zip code area today. ? ? ? ? ? ? Then why was it scheduled? This is the 2nd time this has happened. I love to help out, but let's get the communication straight and save the hassle. Pros: helping others Cons: pick-up unreliable more
