Excellent food, service, and Italian atmosphere! Prices are accurate for portion and quality.

Worst

I love a great italian restaurant, but it has literally been years since I have had such bad service in Portland. She sure looked busy, but my husband and I believe she was just ...

Best Happy Hour Menu!!! 5/14/2008

Wow!! What a great place for Happy Hour!!! I'd highly, highly recommend it! I took some clients of mine in for happy hour and vino & we all had a blast. Their happy hour menu prices were great ($1.95 - $3.95) and best of all we left stuffed. Unlike many other happy hour menus where the portions are small. The Shrimp Scampi & Buffalo Prawns are my favorite. We had a couple bottles of wine and I was very impressed with the selection. Everything local from Oregon, California, Washington and a ""Superb"" Italian selection. If you're looking for a reasonable wine selection, they've got it. If you're looking for Silver Oak Cab, they've got it. This was only my second time visiting Amalfi's, and I have to say it won't be my last!! Pros: Best Happy Hour Menu!! Cons: Nothing more

Best Pizza Anywhere!!! 5/14/2008

Oh my Gosh!!! That's what you'll say when you've had an Amalfi's pizza. My husband & I have been going to Amalfi's for over 5 years now, at least two to three times a month, and we're still not sick of it. We recently had the ""The Amalfi Pannini"" and that's our latest addiction. Once you've had one of those, as well the pizza, you'll get hooked like my husband and I and keep going back. They recently remodeled and their new bar, as well outdoor patio, is gorgeous. It's really enhanced the atmosphere to a more intimate & cozy vibe. The last time we visited Amalfi's, it was on a Friday and there was live music in the bar!! I wonder if they'll be doing this more often....I hope so!! There was a lot of fun energy and everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves. MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN PORTLAND!! Pros: Best Pizza in Town!!! Cons: None!! more

Excellent pizza!! Can be busy, might have to wait.... 4/22/2008

My entire family has been enjoying Amalfis for decades. We love the Amalfis combination pizza. The pizza crust is different than most pizza places and the ingredients have lots of flavor. However, I have not tried very many of their other dishes - I just can't pass up the pizza! I have had a mistake or two over the years, but can't count that against them, they completely took care of us and rectified the situation. A couple of mistakes in 30 years isn't bad! more

So mediocre we wince about the money we spent there 4/19/2008

Friday night we eat out with our 7- and 8-year-old and we like to try a variety of restaurants. This is the worst Friday meal yet. All four of us left disappointed; my husband and I left in a bad mood, having spent $50 on incredible mediocrity. Especially surprising since it's really hard to ruin Italian. Amalfi's reminds of ""ethnic"" food in my rural Oregon childhood - no daring, no flavor, appeal to everybody without appealing to anybody. My son's pizza reminded me of bad chain pizza, my daughter's ravioli looked like Costco brand with Ragu on top (she refused to eat it, which has NEVER happened in an Italian restaurant before). Garlic bread was that cheap American-French bread that was slightly stale. My daughter's crudite plate - canned black olives, a red onion slice, two cucumber slices and two tomato slices. My husband's panini was characterless. Waitress was very nice, wine & beer were good. Kids liked their ice cream. Great bathrooms. If you like standard American versions of Italian food, you may really like it (a lot of people there seemed to). If you are looking for interesting Italian, I would not recommend this place. Pros: Wait staff, bathrooms Cons: Food. more

Amalfi's - no thanks. 3/2/2008

My husband and I had been wanting to try Amalfi's for a while - we live nearby and it always looks welcoming and busy. We had about a thirty minute wait for a table on a Saturday night, so we went to the bar, which was very busy but the staff were friendly. When we got to the table, it was greasy, but the waiter was again friendly. The food, unfortunately, was inedible. The garlic bread was the worst kind of cheap white bread (where the garlic came in was a mystery) and it smelled like burned rubber rather than garlic. I had the chicken and provolone ravioli with marinara sauce and I would eat my scarf if someone could prove to me that it wasn't pre-packaged and possibly even Ragu sauce and pre-grated processed parmesan 'cheese'. Also, the plate it came on was very dirty. Pros: Nice atmosphere in the bar. Fire pits outside Cons: Worst kind of pre-packaged, over processed food. more

Best Everything!!! 1/16/2008

Wow!! This was our first time dining at Amalfi's and we loved it!!! From the service to the food everything was perfect. My wife and I sat at the fire-side table in the bar and it was really romantic. I had their ""famous pizza"" and my wife had the Chicken Parmigiano and we both walked away very satisfied with lunch for the next day. This was a great first time experience and we highly recommend Amalfi's!! We definately will be back soon. Pros: Excellent Food & Service Cons: Nothing to complain about more

Best Bus/Server EVER! 11/30/2007

OH MAN! On our first visit to Amalfi's we immediately meshed with a crazy-haired ""Jack Black"" type busboy named Elliot. He'd just begun and was paying his dues before moving into a server position. We practically demanded that he serve us anyway and they agreed to let us have him even though he hadn't been fully trained. My brother and I had rather complicated requests and we were floored when we noticed that he wasn't writing it all down. We said ""Are you sure you don't want to write this down?"" He said ""I have a mind like a steal trap"" When our food came PERFECTLY we were amazed. He joked with us and made us feel like we'd known him forever. He's extremely witty and even raps!! I've been back several times and each time he's remembered our names and EVEN all of our PAST ORDERS!! I have always been pleased with the food and atmosphere, but Elliot is the main reason that I will continue to return. I was happy to learn that they are now going to be open for lunch and Elliot is now officially a server!! Pros: Elliot more

Best Pizza in a very long time, Good service, Great Antipasti 2/26/2007

I ordered a small pizza and brought half home. Of course I had already eaten half of the antipasti plate, which could have had something to do with it. Pros: Antipasti plate, combination pizza Cons: they are a bit slow getting the pizza out more

Service nonexistant 12/21/2006

We visited once before and found the food predictable but fine and the service friendly. But on our last visit we sat at our table for 15 minutes without a waiter checking in on us. No water, no beverage order taken, no nothing. When she finally arrived we expressed our discontent, and she unsympathetically informed us that it wasn't her fault, because we weren't even her table. Needless to say we got up and left--and had a fresh and delicious meal with impeccable service at Fife's down the street. Unless the level of service improves dramatically Amalfi's is going to lose a lot of customers. more

SLOW customer service 12/20/2006

If you like LOTS of time to converse without even a menu to look at, this is a great place. When you receive your drinks 30 minutes after ordering them, you will know the kind of evening you are in for. When your food arrives at your table 30 minutes after that you may be famished.....or angry. I was both. The restaurant was not busy and yet we received little service. The food was warm and tasty, but, then we waited for the check and waited to have the card run. Not really horrible, but it was the neglect of the table that was the issue. If the server knew how to find our table, this may not have been an issue. Because she could not find her way, I will choose not to find MY way back. more

Average food that is over priced! 7/15/2006

I read the reviews for the Amalfi and expected a kid friendly, cheap eats place. The food was average and I found it to be over priced. City search rated it a single $. The cheapest entree was a plate of pasta with choice of sauce. It was $11 ala carte and $13 as a meal. Most of the other entrees ranged for $13 to $16. At these prices I expect something much better. I didn't find it to be very kid friendly either. Kids were supposed to eat for free but they never offered my daughter it to us. Stay away from the veal parmigiana. It is a processed veal patty and at $15 for the meal it was not worth it. more

Good choice for families with little kids 4/15/2005

It's not top quality Italian dining, but you can bring your little ones who eat spaghetti for free! I stick to safe dishes like Fettucini Alfredo and I'm happy. Sometimes you can't be too picky when dining with toddlers!! Plus as a family of 5, we usually have a bill under $30. more

Pizza on Fremont 11/11/2002

Amalifi'es is my all-time favorite pizza. The crust and the sauce are my favorite. I have been going to Amalfie's for as long as I can remember. I would be heart-broken if it ever closed. I recently moved to Vancouver and every time I go to dinner with friends in Portland, I suggest Amalfie's!! The pizza is affordable and plentiful. more

Please pass the seasoning. 10/15/2002

This is the middle of the road for me, I just couldn't figure this place out. At times it was a good dining experience, and at other times it was mediocre, never was it anything to write home about. During the hour and a half I was there I only got my iced tea refilled once. The lasagna I ordered was fantastic on top, but I dog a little deeper and encountered an almost flavorless pile of noodles. The pepperoncinis were huge and good, as was the sandwich of my wife's I tried. Candle lit tables provided a good atmosphere, and the place wasn't too crowded. I'll be back to try the pizza next; this is worth investigating a little more. Pros: Large portions, Great prices, parking lot Cons: Lasagna kinda bland, Slow service more

unspeakable 8/13/2002

The pizza was surprisingly good. Only because I had never had it before, you understand the commercial that says, ""Don't bother me I'm eating"" after tasting this pizza. more

Solid Italian Food 8/12/2002

They do well with just about everything here. Great pizza, good pasta and great lasagna. Pros: Very Clean, Great Service, Solid Food more

Manic Manicotti 7/20/2002

The ""Combination"" dinner satisfies all the taste buds! Smothered with a delicious sauce and Mazzorella cheese, this Cannelloni/Manicotti dish is wonderful. more

Neighborhood classic 6/11/2002

I've only eaten pizza here, so I'll comment on that. It's good... of the thinner crust variety, with a nice, tangy sauce. The way a place feels is important to pizza joints and Italian restaurants, and this one is just right, somehow. It's dark, with lots of booths and corners. The servers wear green polo shirts. Or, at least, they used to. more
