We had been going to ASOB since its opening, and always loved the food and the staff. We eventually moved to the neighborhood, and started to be recognized by Eric, Andrew the mi...

Worth the Price, Yum, and ALMOST Too pretty to eat 11/22/2006

It's been a few days since I went, refer to ""starbucks"" review for the additional details. I was the ""companion"" in her review. ;) But I felt I needed to comment I told coworkers this was ""the best"" dinner I've ever had. Everything was great, starting from the bread/butter to start...through the pumpkin mousse dessert I had. The chef most certainly has an imagination...though we weren't too thrilled about the ""Chef's Whim"" option. The option is unknown to all except the chef as he decides to make your $50/person dishes...no choice....just eat...cross-your fingers...NO THANKS. I liked the art on the wall (are those LEGO piece in the painting?) and the tear drop lights...my type of place..smaller/private/and exclusive. Plus it has a bus stop (#72) 100 feet away. If you big on presentation of food...this place takes #1 standing. Pros: Food Quality, Presentation, Service Cons: ""Whim Idea"" more

Innovative and superb tasting food 11/20/2006

What blew me away about Alberta Street Oyster Bar and Grill was the innovative combinative use of ingredients. Monkfish and oxtail? Or diver scallops with chicken liver? If these pairings sound peculiar to you, I assure you I had the exact same thought. But as each course arrived, I continued to be completely blown away by how amazing superb those taste just meld togeteher. Pros: Scallops, squash soup, monkfish Cons: Limited wine menu more

My favoritest :) 11/20/2006

This is my favorite restaurant in Portland as the title displays. Great service, a chef who will come ask you what you liked and why, and food that is innovative and prepared with a great deal of care. The chef's tasting menu is really the way to go. 5 courses that are always full of suprises. The location a little but of a hike from downtown, but for those visiting Portland it is only about a 10 minute cab ride. more

Very Small Portions! 10/14/2006

We had read many great reviews regarding this restaurant and finally went last Friday night. The food was FABULOUS!! BUT the portions were oh so small. For the price, which was quite spendy we left hungry. We love the Alberta Street shops and restaurants, but the price and portion size will detour us from coming back to this particular restaurant. Pros: The food flavors were fantastic Cons: Way over priced for the portion size and location more

Awesome staff, Great menu, good food and drink, where's the clams? 9/26/2006

Went here to sit at the bar, drink and meet friends. I expected to be treated as a second class citiaen because I wasn't eating from their great menu. I'm not much of an oyster fan so I was looking for clams. Couldn't find any but I was told they have them usually. mmmmm, clams. My friends had the oyster shooters and loved em. I was just reveling in the friendliness of the staff (okay so there were a couple really cute chicks working there, go figure). They have a patio like all the great bars and restaurants in Portland. And it's on Alberta Street, grew up around there, still feels like home. Pros: great menu, great staff, patio Cons: no clams when I was there more

Best Food in Portland 8/30/2006

A group of us were able to dine there last evening. Everything, from start to finish, was amazing. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the wine and the various courses we tasted. The portions, for the price and artistry, are more than ample. Its the perfect place to bring friends or have an intimate dinner with your significant other. We were also informed that there is a new pastry chef in residence. We shared a couple of desserts, but the peach tart is to die for. Pros: Food and Service Cons: A tad noisy when full more

Avoid most appetizers, entrees, and dessert 7/6/2006

Excellent oysters and presentation, as well as cocktails. However, I wish we had stopped there. Menu descriptions were divine but the food was quite disappointing -- portion sizes were very small and prices quite inflated. Dessert was the most disappointing of all. Pros: oysters, cocktails, service Cons: quality of entrees, very overpriced for what you get more

A Neighborhood Gem! 4/15/2006

This bustling Alberta Street jewel lives up to and surpasses all the recent media hype. Its chef works magic upon the stovetop and his awesome food is only complimented by the warm, efficient and knowledgeable staff. Their cocktail list is inspired, and the winelist seems very fairly priced. Pros: excellent service, exemplary food, wine list value more

Great Food! 4/14/2006

My husband and I live on the West side of Portland. We had heard of the Alberta Street Oyster Bar and Grill and are a real fan of oysters. We went and had dinner here and it was amazing! We had a dozen oysters, appetizers, drinks, dinner and dessert. It reminded us of the food we have had on a cruise ship. The chef was awesome! The sauces and the combinations of flavors were so incredible. We will definately go back and eat there again. We both give it 10 stars! It is one of the best restaurants we have ate at in Portland in several years. Pros: Good Service, Great Food, Great Drinks more

Terrific Neighborhood Oyster Outpost 4/3/2006

Very nice neighborhood restaurant. Very reasonably priced given the cuisine. The selection of oysters was tremendous and probably the highlight of the meal. The pork tenderloin was perfectly cooked. The foie gras appetizer was excellent, especially after Lisa brought us a half glass of sauternes. Had a great bottle of cotes-du-rhone - Domaine St. Luc - look for it. Need to expand winelist. Pros: Reasonable prices, excellent oysters Cons: A bit loud, limited wine list more

Pearl of a place 3/23/2006

Went with a group of 4 friends after hearing and reading all of the great reviews. Made reservations for a Friday night, seated promptly at the only empty table in the 40? seat house. We ordered a multitude of items from: 2 Dozen oysters on the half shell, fried oysters, veal sweetbreads, smoked salmon carpaccio, foie gras, Smoked duck bacon and poached eggs, halibut cheeks and pork tenderloin. All were fabulous and we have already made reservations for next weekend. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!! more

More than oysters! 3/22/2006

I'm not an oyster fan, but I love this place! We've been going since the day they opened and I've tried and loved just about everything on the menu. My personal favorite is the appetizer seared scallops over tiny lentils...yum! Service is outstanding. more
