Best

Best sushi and best prices in the area. We've tried them all and none compare to Akashi! Always delicious and great value. We go about once a week and have a great dining experie...

Worst

This place has so much potential, but I give them a low rating for low-potency wasabi (just isn't as hot as it is elsewhere) and the dipping sauce (teriyaki?) that's watered down....

LOVE LOVE LOVE 8/20/2010

Best sushi and best prices in the area. We've tried them all and none compare to Akashi! Always delicious and great value. We go about once a week and have a great dining experience. If you like sushi its a must. My parents go with us, they don't like sushi but they like the grilled snapper and hibachi style menu as well. more

My favorite sushi place in the Triangle 8/12/2010

I've been a customer of this restaurant since they opened their doors. I have been to many of the other sushi restaurants in the area, but I keep coming back to Akashi for a lot of reasons: (1) the fish always feels fresh, (2) they have one of the largest selections of creative rolls (over 80!) that I have ever seen, (3) their prices are affordable and a good value for what you get, (4) their waitstaff is friendly and accommodating, and (5) their restaurant feels clean. Their ambiance has evolved with time from being plain to having a modern Asian feel. Occasionally, their service can be slow, but that has been an exception rather than a rule from my plethora of visits there. more

Reasonably priced and good food 1/28/2010

Owner on site. Good sushi at a reasonable price:) Pros: great sushi Cons: sometimes they automatically add tip (i had party of five) more

Great Sushi Great Prices 10/30/2008

Akashi is our new fave sushi restaurant in the area. The sushi never fails to satisfy and the you can't beat the prices. Try the tuna jaw appetizer...you won't be disappointed!! more

Great Sushi and Service 10/1/2008

They food is fantastic and cheap. Also they are usually pretty fast even at lunch when they are super busy. The sushi chef's are super nice and we love sitting at the sushi bar and chatting with them. Pros: Cheap and Fast, Excellent Sushi! Cons: Closed Sundays, Strange Location more

Best sushi in Triangle - I kid you not 8/27/2008

This is admittedly almost the same review that I entered on Akashi's other Citysearch entry. I did want to point out that when you see overwhelming 5 star reviews with multiple paragraphs of praise and then just a few people with vague criticisms who give 1 stars, hopefully you can draw the correct conclusion as to which to trust. Maybe it's the competition spouting off jealously, maybe it's somebody who feels the need to be a contrarian, who knows, who cares. :) Pros: Outstanding food, service, and amazingly cheap price Cons: Location in run down strip mall, so-so decor more

Best sushi in Triangle - I kid you not 8/27/2008

For some reason there are 2 entries on Citysearch for this restaurant. See also the ""Akashi Japanese Restaurant"" which has an editorial review and lots of user reviews.\r \r So I'll keep it brief here - I've eaten sushi all over Asia, big cities in this country etc. This place surprisingly rivals some of the best ones I've ever been to. Don't get me wrong, of course Akashi doesn't have the super high-end ingredients and class of a place like Osho in the Bay Area, but then again, you're not paying a fortune either. The half off sushi really is half off, no silly ""equal or lesser value"" gimmicks. The chef is the guy who made nearby Shiki Sushi famous, this is his new place and if you dare to compare, you'll see why people are raving. Talk to him a little and you'll see just how dedicated he is to his craft.\r \r The only cons are just the fact that it's in a pretty run down strip mall, and the decor is fairly plain. (They've spruced it up a lot recently, so the bright cafeteria lights and cheap chairs etc. are thankfully gone.) I come here for the excellent food, friendly service, and convenient 54/55 location. If you want fancy atmosphere, go to Shiki. If you want the best sushi in the Triangle at unbelievably cheap prices, you owe it to yourself to try Akashi. Pros: Outstanding food, service, and amazingly cheap price Cons: Below average strip mall location, so-so decor more

Krab with a ""k"" 7/17/2008

Rolls were marginal, nigiri was just okay. Careful when ordering the ""Crab"" nigiri; they don't tell you its actually the artificial stuff and has all the appeal of fish flavored spaghetti. Yikes. more

great everything 6/21/2008

the service was great, but best of all the food. the sushi ive been to places all over the triangle but they have the best sushi. Just becuase its a sushi resturant doesnt mean it doesnt still uphold high standards for everything else. the steak and chicken i had was cooked perfectly and you dont get shorted on it either. the rice was great. the soup was the best soup i have had at any japanese resturant. i ate the tofu and spinich soup. ten times better then the onion soup. be sure to try it. if you get a chance be sure to check out akashi japanese resturaunt. you wont regret it Pros: steak, rice, soup, price, service, sushi more

best sushi at the best prices in the triangle 6/21/2008

Simply the best in the triangle. I have been eating sushi since I was in grade school and this gem is the best I have ever found. The prices here are very affordable, and the sushi selection is vast and fresh. Even in you don't enjoy sushi, the teppenyaki selection here is wonderful. The head teppenyaki chef has more than 20 years experience. I took my date here and she was very impressed! Pros: Awesome affordable food, staff Cons: none. more

Favorite Sushi Place 5/23/2008

I love Akashi for three reasons. One because it is in a great location. It is very close to work, and very easy to get to. Two because their sushi is amazing. I have found that not only do they have really good sushi that is fresh, but everything is at such a reasonable price, and that is hard to come by these days. The last reason is their great employees. I always get good service there. Sometimes the waitresses are busy, but I have never waited to long for a refill or for a check. It is altogether a great place to eat. more

Best sushi value ever - very good sushi at a great price! 4/26/2008

We love Akashi and go there more often than any other restaurant in town. I think their sushi is as good or better than anywhere else in town. It is without question the best sushi value I've ever encountered-- good quality at a great price. The servers are generally hardworking and nice and the manager is very friendly. I think the service and speed are usually very good, but on weekend nights they sometimes get very busy. My only knock on the sushi is that it isn't as consistent as at higher-end sushi bars. The taste is always great, but sometimes the rolls aren't cut into perfectly even pieces or the level of wasabi in the nigiri differs. If you're looking for sushi-as-art and don't mind spending a fortune, this is probably not for you. If you want tasty and creative sushi at incredibly low prices, this is the best sushi place I've ever seen. Pros: value, friendly service, great variety and taste Cons: sushi is not 100% consistent more

AMAZING 4/7/2008

Akashi has become a quick favorite of mine. It is BY FAR the highest quality sushi and the most varied selection in the area. Everything is delicious...and nearly everything is half off. To celebrate their one-year anniversary, they cut most of their prices in half. You can pretty much stuff your face on some of the most delectable, beautiful pieces of sushi that you will ever see for a fraction of the price. I highly recommend the Romeo Roll, and the Carolina Sunrise and Sunset Rolls. There are many, many others but those are particularly awesome. The service can sometime be a bit slow, but the outcome is worth the wait. Pros: Amazing selection Cons: None... more

Very good and affordable sushi 9/16/2007

I used to be a regular at Shiki from the time it first opened its doors. Now I tend to dine more often at Akashi due to the great sushi and very affordable prices ( I dine there at least once a week). All rolls and nigiri are 50% off of the listed menu price (rolls range from $2.25 to $5.50; nigiri is $1-$1.25). Specials are not subject to the 50% pricing. The free edamame is also a plus. I guess I am not a wasabi connoisseur but I don't think what is served at Akashi is that much milder than other places I have tried. I will admit that the atmosphere is basic, but I don't go there for the atmosphere. Service can be slow at times, mainly during the very busy lunch crowd and if they so happen to be down a waitress or two (it does happen at even the best restaurants). With that said, more often than not I have been very pleased with the service and the food. To avoid a wait, go early or late for lunch (11:30 or after 1 or 1:30 p.m.). Lunchtime on Friday is particularly crowded. Pros: Quality sushi, affordable prices Cons: Busy at lunchtime more

Should be reviewed more often- way undervalued compared to Shiki 9/7/2007

My wife and I eat at Akashi easy three nights a week, just discovered it on Citysearch and were shocked at the low number of reviews and criticisms! They have taken us away from Kanki all together - we just tried Shiki down the road. more

So much potential, yet... 3/8/2007

This place has so much potential, but I give them a low rating for low-potency wasabi (just isn't as hot as it is elsewhere) and the dipping sauce (teriyaki?) that's watered down. Service is slower than it should be. Pros: Reasonable prices Cons: Wimpy wasabi and watered-down dipping sauce more

poor service, poor sushi, poor ambiance 2/15/2007

Claims to hold half off sushi, but 50% off=30% off the very small, very warm sushi roles. 30% is close to 50% isnt it? Id rather pay full price and enjoy the meal Pros: location Cons: food, value, service, quality, overall experience more

Maybe a better lunchtime place... 1/28/2007

After reading all of the great reviews for this restaurant and since Shiki Sushi has become so crowded, we decided to try this out. We had visited Akashi when it first opened, before they had their liquor license. We weren't impressed then, but thought it might have improved over time. We went on a Saturday night around 7pm. The bright lights in the dining room and the placement of the tables did not make it very welcoming. There were about 15 tables with 12 filled. The only floor staff were the hostess, who appeared to be exhausted or distracted, and one waitress. The sushi selection was overwhelming - not a bad thing. Complimentary edamame is brought to your table as soon as you're seated. It didn't look particularly fresh. We ordered our drinks while we read through the menu. The waitress brought two beers and one glass saying she'd bring another one...we had to wave her down to remind her. We finally decided on our order - tuna tataki and several sushi rolls. The tuna tataki came out first and, again, the waitress said she'd be back with plates, which never came. The sushi was brought to us by the sushi chef himself - which was actually a nice touch as he pointed out a few things we might want to try next time. Unfortunately, the sushi sat there without soy sauce dishes. The hostess was busy wiping down tables and the one waitress was running back and forth shouting orders to the hostess. It took about 10 minutes for one of them to finally look in our direction. The hostess brought the plates, (she actually brought them to the wrong table at first) slamming them down on the table as if we were inconveniencing her. Pros: Good quality sushi Cons: No ambiance, awful service more

Great Sushi at a reasonable price! 10/25/2006

I'm fortunate enough to work directly across the street from Akashi and it has become my favorite place to eat lunch. I can't comment on the rest of the menu but the sushi is great! I typically go between 1:00 and 2:30pm for their half-price sushi menu and they're constantly adding new sushi rolls to the menu. I've been to some sushi bars and their wasabi tends to taste sweet but Akashi's is perfect! Akashi...where have you been all my life? Arigato! more

Sushi heaven 7/12/2006

We followed Yung from Shiki Sushi, and we haven't been back. Yung and his staff make great, GREAT sushi! You must try the ESCOLAR (white tuna) -- it's like heaven to me and I haven't found white tuna anywhere else that is even close to it! Pros: Really fresh fish, amazing escolar/white tuna, good prices and fun staff more
