Nice Atmosphere, Great Cocktails 1/5/2009

The reviews seem mixed for Akasha but I've always had a good experience here. 2 times I've sat at the bar, had some wine, which they let us taste first, and some apps. more

Akasha is Food Queen! 10/24/2008

In short.... DIVINE!!!! As a Culver City business owner, I am thrilled to have Akasha in town! The food is fresh, the wine is sensational. more

I Became an Evangelist After Going Here! 9/7/2008

Akasha is the perfect restaurant of the 21st century. The food and atmosphere were great, of course. The location in downtown Culver City is a fun one also. Pros: excellent food, excellent service, eco-friendly more

In response to the person below 9/2/2008

I too was there yesterday for lunch. There wasn't anything open in CC so we went to Akasha. The decor is great....I love the NY style loft look. Its was slammed when we were there. I agree with the time issue as our food took a bit of time but I figured it was because they were slammed and it was Labor Day and nothing within a 5 block radius was really open. I had a male waiter who was nice and did apologize for the wait and he also sent over a manager, a British woman, who apologized and told us that the kitchen wasn't expecting such a turn out today and reassured us that this will prepare them for the future. So I am not going to nail them to a cross. Was I hungry and grouchy, yes, but I am also a fair and understanding man. They comped our drinks which was good for us! The food I thought was great, I had the Turkey burger and my wife had the salmon salad, we shared a prosciutto pizza as an appetizer. They were all good! The table next to us had a waitress and she was training a new girl so maybe the new server will replace the server that the review complained about below. The girl in training was beautiful and smiled a lot so I guess that's a good sign. My wife and I will go back and hopefully they will have gotten the timing down. Its also only been open a few months. Pros: Food, Decor, Drinks, Service, PARKING!!!!!!! Cons: A bit noisey more

Disappointing food. Didn't feel valued as a customer. 9/1/2008

My girlfriend and I decided to wrap up our crazy labor day weekend with a lunch date somewhere in the quaint culver city area, we decided on Akasha. She ordered their pumpkin-lentl burger with fries and I got their beef burger with coleslaw, as well as their hummus appetizer. After a 10 minute period or so they brought us the hummus : A tad on the sweet side, with seasoned flat bread topped with caramelized onions, we were won over. Their hummus is amazing. After we finished that, there was a long period of no service. We started to notice that other tables around us were getting their food before us, patrons who had arrived 15-20 minutes after us. We asked our waitress if there was a problem, and explained that we had been waiting for a while, and she claimed that the kitchen was backed up and asked if we were in a hurry. No apology whatsoever. Very rude demeanor. Finally our plates arrived. The pumpkin-lentil burger was very bland, no flavor, dried out. No vibe whatsoever. The fries were akin to Carl's Jr. or McDonalds. Very underwhelming, generic, no originality. The beef burger was amazingly disappointing. I am convinced that the burger was on the broiler and hastily thrown on a frying pan. It arrived on the table covered in grease, which completely saturated the bun. The ingredients were very generic. Run of the mill lettuce leaves, tomato slices, red onions, and a small cup of catsup. The bun was actually decent, suprisingly. I would expect a hamburger at this price tag($16.00) to be much more interesting, with more creative ingredients. It's interesting that you can go to Cassell's(LA burger staple) and get a far better hamburger for about $6.00. The food here was a huge letdown. I felt ripped off. Father's Office nearby has a far superior hamburger for the same price. Its frustrating when a place like this charges this much for food with no originality, creativity, or pizzaz. more

nice eco friendly spot 8/26/2008

nicely done though very expensive for what you get. The room is great the food is good. Just not great more

Wonderful!! 6/15/2008

I went in kinda spur of the moment. I had seen the restaurant on Flip That Restaurant on TLC, but at the time I was living out of state and had forgotten this restaurant even existed until I drove by. I had to try it! Pros: Amazing food, quick/friendly service, great atmosphere Cons: Portion size more

Good atmosphere, small portions 6/10/2008

I ordered the grilled artichoke to start with and could not believe how small it was for $9 - it was about a third of an artichoke. It was also drenched in olive oil. The main course, an eggplant and tomato dish was also on the small side, but filling. However, this also seemed to be kind of oily. Their bread is great and they are very generous with that portion. The wine list was decent and I found a reasonably priced pinot noir by the glass. I did think the overall atmosphere was lively and upbeat and I was able to hear my dinnr companions above the din. Our server, David, was really friendly and made the experience even more pleasurable. I'm curious to see what they food is like for breakfast or lunch so I would go back. Overall, the portions are very small for what they are charging. Pros: Wine list, service Cons: Small portion size for the price more

Best cupcakes ever! 5/15/2008

Okay, I cannot recommend the restaurant since I did not eat there, but what I can recommend are their cupcakes from the bakery. Our server, Rob, highly recommended the Carrot Cupcake and I'm glad I listened to him, because now I will probably want to have them delivered to me at 2:00 a.m. like he said I would! I also had their Raspberry Vanilla Cupcake, which beats out my favorite cupcake at Vanilla Bake Shop, the Strawberries 'n Cream. I had to resist eating the paper lining after I finished; yep, that good! Pros: cupcakes, good-looking and knowledgeable wait-staff more

Horrible food + horrible service = horrible evening 5/6/2008

My husband and I took his parents to this place, expecting it to be so amazing. Visually it is stunning, but the service was embarrassing, the food was either bland, cold, or too spicy. Nothing went right the entire evening. My husband ordered wine and it was corked. The second glass was terrible too. The server had no personality, no wine knowledge, no menu knowledge. When the manager came over to see how our night went we told him honestly of our experience and her just walked away without any attempt at making the situation better for us. We were not interested in any financial freebies, we just wanted to be honest in our experience - it was the worst. We will never come back. Pros: bartender was great! Cons: service, food, overall experience horrible more

Unimpressive. 5/4/2008

I feel compelled to write a review because I've been hearing and reading nothing but good reviews from good sources that I have discovered were mostly false, at least in our experience. Pros: Service and wine list Cons: Tiny bland portions, outside seating, too expensive for its worth more

Another Gem in Culver City 4/28/2008

I am really starting to enjoy the assortment of dining options in Culver City. Akasha is a super fit! We made reservations around 5pm Friday for a party of 4. We got a 9:15 reservation. The vibe is super for an entertaining dinner with another couple. Super comfortable seats too which is a big plus for me. Tables are defintiely not overcrowded and on top of each other. Great bread right away is key for me too and this is some of the freshest and best tasting bread around. Our server, Jonathon, was firendly and very helpful. We ordered the shrimp cocktail app - awesome. All 4 entrees were super. I had the scallops personally and loved them. Plenty of food too. You know what's great? -When you want to entertain a party of 4 and you can park without having to valet, enjoy some wine at the wine bar next to Ugo for an hour, then have a great 2 hours dining experience at Akasha or Ford's. Pros: Comfortable Tables and Seating, Vibe, Food, Service Cons: kinda a small menu more

Suprised that Barbara Streisand didn't die of starvation..... 4/22/2008

My friend and I were very excited to visit this place. It was under new and notable restaurants section on citysearch and downtown Culver City is a new hot spot for good restaurants (the owner used to be Barbara Streisand's personal chef) A few items on the menu seemed quite tasty so we decided to order a few things. My friend ordered a festive drink and received a drink in a very small martini glass that wasn't full!! The drink was $12 and this is lunchtime folks!! Are they saving their liquor for a rainy day? We are not in the days of prohibition!! Then we received our meal which needed a magnifying glass because the portions were so small. I don't like hungry man portions (I weigh under 100 lbs), but this is ridiculous. On a positive note the sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had, but this restaurant appears to be under the rules of the great depression (hoarding their portions for a rainy day or something). I told our server the fries were so great, but so few and the server said ""I know"" and left it at that, but someone in management must have overheard the conversation (the restaurant was pretty empty at the time) because they brought out some more fries (thank goodness, they truly were delicious). All in all we spent 60 bucks for lunch (we ordered a sandwich, appetizer and a drink..nothing stellar) and we were left hungry. If the owner served these portions to Barbara Streisand, I think she would've starved to death. Tender Greens is right down the street which serves good portions, uses quality ingredients and is WAY cheaper. I'm giving this restaurant 3 stars solely because of the sweet potato fries. Pros: Sweet Potato Fries Cons: Stingy Portions more

Great new addition to the LA restaurant scene. 4/21/2008

Lovely new spot in Culver City. Food was excellent, very flavorful and interesting. The Masala shrimp and tamarind chutney are a must have and the short ribs are delicious. The short ribs fall apart and are moist and hearty. The braeburn apple tart for dessert is fantastic and vegan......who would have known? Solid wine list and there are some fun cocktails. Pros: yummy food, great for vegans, good value and fun. Cons: no valet more

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE 4/20/2008

Another trendy LA restaurant that gets by on mediocre food and large noisy crowds. My party and I tried a number of dishes. All mediocre. In fact the worst steak I've had in years. Even the deserts miss. And if you can't make a good desert turn off the burners! Large space, nice atmosphere but loud inside. The typical LA lemming will like this place and even think it's good. I have no intentions to return. more

Food was delicious, yet portions small 4/13/2008

Went there last night with a small group. I had the spare ribs, and they were absolutely delicious!! Unfortunately, the servings are somewhat small, but that may be because I'm used to the L.A. supersized dishes that everyone seems to serve. Prices are ok, but might be considered a little high given the serving sizes. Cappucino was delicious! Although I asked for decaf, and was wide awake until 4am! Hmmm. Pros: Fun and hip restaurant with delicious food! Cons: A little pricey for the portion sizes. more

bland 4/10/2008

I've been to this restaurant twice since it opened. Each time, my food was tasteless. Our server was nice, but you got the feeling he didn't like the food either. When our server delivered the dessert menus, he was finally excited about telling us about the offerings... so we decided to take a risk much to our chagrin. They were good. Perhaps the chef should have stuck to what she's good at. The decor is nice but the layout is not well thought out. I just noticed the same postings copied and pasted on a couple other websites like citysearch...seems like management is the one writing these rave reviews. Things that make you go hmmm.... Pros: parking, decor, dessert Cons: food more

Loved it! 4/4/2008

I tried Akasha with a friend of mine who recommended it and I loved it!! The food was delicious and the ambiance was nice. We ordered about 4 appetizers and shared everything. The mac & cheese was awesome and the mushroom tart was also very good! I highly recommed this place ...but make reservations in advance they were packed. Akasha is definitely worth trying!! more

expensive experience not to repeat. 3/25/2008

We were referred to this restaurant and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, very disappointed. When we first arrived, our reservation had the incorrect name which made us look like walk-ins then they finally realized that this was an error on their part. Our waiter had no wine experience so we had to have the bartender recommend something, one of the glasses must have had some sort of soapy residue as the wine tasted like a dishwasher. When we got a new glass the waiter did not have the etiquette to bring it filled with wine already. The food was mediocre, at best. Portions were very small. When we asked for bread since we saw it go to the table next to us they told us that they were out of it. Did not even offer anything in it place. The food was bland and RFD has better tasting food which is all vegan. We left very hungry...Not to mention that the table next to us was complaining that they were going to In-Out burger when they left since they were so hungry still. Pros: atomsphere Cons: food more
