Uncooked, frozen beef and even worse service 5/28/2010

I had been here a couple of times before about a couple of years ago and both times it was disappointing, but I saw the recent reviews being good, so I thought I'd give them one more try hoping they'd gotten their act together. I ordered a combo for a take out here about a couple of months ago - can't remember what it's called but it had marinated beef, rice, and macaroni salad. I took it home and opened the container just to find the beef (other than cooked looking surface)is in one solid, still frozen chunk underneath the thin layer that was cooked outside. I was horrified and disgusted that I threw it all away. This is on top of their service (or lack thereof) - the employees never bother with hello or thank you. Turned out my friends from the islands avoid this place all together. Go figure. Pros: comparable price Cons: bad service, mediocre uncooked food more

Great lunch spot 7/1/2009

Just tried lunch here for the first time. I was very impressed by the quality of the food and the large portions. I had the kalua pork which was excellent. I also heard good things from the people I was eating with about the garlic shrimp and the curry. Medium price range but wonderful, tasty food. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Pros: good quality, ok prices more

Excellent, authentic food; generous portions 3/4/2009

My girlfriend and I went here after we spent a few weeks in Hawaii in late 2008. I had tried Loco Moco there, so I wanted to try that, and I also love Kalua pork. Both were excellent - the Kalua pork tasted like it was fresh from the Imu pit - and we've been back 7 or 8 times in the last 2 months. I can get both in a ""combo"" for around $1 more, so I don't have to decide between the two. My girlfriend loves SPICY food, but nobody around here can or will make it to her taste. She ordered the garlic shrimp ""triple spicy"" (not recommended for most!) and she LOVES it. They have a special spicy sauce they bring out from the back when she orders. Finally - a place that makes it the way she likes it. And when she's happy, I'm happy. :^) Keep up the good work! Pros: All the meals I've had are [expertly] prepared to order Cons: Not much seating space, so we try to avoid the busiest times more

Solid Overall 12/30/2008

Food is great. I would recommend carrying Aloha Shoyu though. Maybe its just me but I can't stand Kikoman shoyu, it ruins a good meal. Also, how about Hapa rice? Pros: Clean Cons: No Aloha Shoyu more

Amazing food. 12/8/2008

I was just there tonight for some chicken katsu and spicy shrimp. YUM! I have known the owners and founders Hiriomi and Gerrick for years...From the inception the Aiea Grill was their vision. Gerrick is a phenomenal chef of not only the Hawaiian menu that he created, but also of sushi, steaks and everything else I have had the pleasure and honor of sharing with him and his delightful wife. more

Delicious, Clean and Good Servise 11/21/2008

I went to the restaurant with my co-worker today. I ordered a Hawaiian style spareribs. It was good!! more

broke da mouth! 11/4/2008

everything at aiea grill is onolicious. from the plate lunches and loco moco's to the spam musubi's and malasads...everything! to me, the food is as good as, if not better then, what i've had growing up in hawaii. and you know what, it doesn't matter if you're from hawaii or not, the food here is ALL GOOD! real gooood. Pros: everything is mmm mmm good Cons: too far from my home more

Simply put - AMAZING 10/31/2008

I discovered this place last week, after seeing the ad here on citysearch, and I'm really glad I decided to check it out, because its the best tasting food I have discovered in the Portland area since I moved here in January. Everything I try at this place is amazing.. I keep trying new things, expecting that this time the food will just be OK (instead of great), but everything tastes o-so-good. Also, they have the best macaroni salad I have ever had, and I don't even like macaroni salad. Pros: Excellent food, friendly service, reasonable prices Cons: The dining area is a bit small more

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/16/2008

I've eaten here a few times now and they never ever disappoint. I'm from the islands and I had some of my local friends visit who have also moved to the mainland. When we ate here it was like we were all back home. I think the only thing I wish was that it was a bigger restaurant with waiters/waitresses. Standing in line can be a hassle when it's busy (which is a lot of the times I've been there). The line can be going out the door. Small sacrifice for the food you get. I think Aiea Grill also has some things up on the places back home. The food is awesome, go eat here. Pros: Food Cons: standing in line more

Great Food, what about gloves though when handling the food? 4/14/2008

The food here is good! Always consistent. I have NEVER gotten sick or anything from this restaurant but the following still concerns me. I wish they would change their policy around this. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Good tasting food, friendly people Cons: employees don't use gloves when handling food more

Better than the Hawaiian BBQ chain restaurants 2/1/2008

The spicy chicken was surprisingly good, was juicy & very flavorful (not the overcooked stuff most places serve). Need to check out the loco moco, heard it's awesome.. more

The Grilled Pineapple Salad is my favorite 2/1/2008

I try to get over there once a week. Try the Pineapple salad and ask for it with the spicy chicken. more

Three helpings... 2/1/2008

Our work meeting had lunch catered by Aiea Grill. A few of my co-workers are regulars, so they made the arrangements. Everything from the salad and mac to ribs, pulled pork, and chicken were really good. I think everyone went back for seconds, I went for thirds. I'll definitely eat there on my next biz trip. Pros: Good food and generous banquet portions more

Fantastic Food, Fantastic Service - Highly Recommend 2/1/2008

Great local Hawaiian place with great food and great service. Because i work so close i typically have lunch thier once or twice a week and i've never been disappointed. I've settled in on thier spicy chicken dish which is always cooked right and full of flavor. I don't know what they put in thier vinegrette salad dressing but that alone would get me back. I have also tried the ribs (tasty sauce, slow cooked, meat almost falls off the bone), the pulled pork (delicious), and the pork adobo (my wife's favorite). Pros: Great food, good value, service is excellent Cons: The seating area isn't very big, get there early for lunch more

Disappointed 1/10/2008

I went when they opened the place and was expecting great things. Ordered the curry dish, as that is typically something very difficult to get right, and unfortunately they did not. Meat was pretty chewy and the curry was fairly bland. Very surprised to see potatoes in the mac salad. Pros: Prices were decent. Cons: Curry needs work. more

Great Service, but dissapointing 11/10/2007

I'll start by saying the service was great and the people were very nice. But the food, I thought was average at best, and overpriced. I had the mahi mahi and garlic shrimp. (just under $9) The mahi mahi was over cooked, and tasted kind of burnt. The garlic shrimp was also overcook and was kind of mushy. We ordered the malasadas for dessert - which looked great, but had sort of a weird taste to them - maybe the oil needed to changed or something. Overall, I was really hoping for some good local grinds, but left very disappointed. The search continues. Pros: nice people, fast service Cons: over cooked food, pricey more

Unbelivable Value - Delicious and GREAT Service! 5/25/2007

When we can go out and feed a faimly of 5 for under $30 we're happy, but findiing Aiea Grill was a true miracle. The kids split the Mahi Mahi (which was perfectly cooked), I had the mini moco (more than enough) and my husband had the chicken katsu moco combo. This Loco Moco thing they do is incredible, but it was the simplest things which blew me away - the macaroni salad! I have NEVER liked macaroni salad and this one was to die for! Not sweet at all and it had potato in it - mmmm. They also serve SPAM Musubi which were killer! I've been to Hawaii a few times and there wasn't ever anything like this. Props. I'm a true foody (went to culinary school and everything) and I think this place rules. It's casual, different and truly tasty. Pros: Value/Price, Quality Cons: Limited seating more

consistently great! 3/1/2007

Food is always fanstatic, the service is great and friendly, and the place is very clean! Recommend everything! more

OUTSTANDING! 12/7/2006

I just moved here from Maui, and I lived in Hilo for 4 years. I consider myself a Loco Moco connissuer. I just tried this place and it was incredible. it was awesome, the onions were perfectly cooked, the gravy was incredible. The only thing that outshines the loco moco was the staff. They were super friendly. For anyone looking for a hawaiian local taste, this is the place. They could open this place up in the middle of Hilo, and put cafe 100 out of business. Incredible LOCO MOCO! P.S. that bugga is bigger than it looks. Pros: almost everything! Cons: a little expensive, but worth it. more

outstanding ""local"" food! 11/30/2006

I've tried several Hawaiian-style plate-lunch places here in town and Aiea Grill was definitely the best. The chicken katsu and char-broiled chicken are outstanding, and the mac-potato salad is not the usual mayonaise-laden stuff you get at other places. It tasted absolutely homemade and even my husband, who usually won't touch the stuff, loved it. The katsu sauce and bbq sauce they give are also excellent. I'm excited to try out the rest of the menu! more
