A-1 Pizza

I called on a whim at 10:10pm on a monday night with a late night craving for pizza after unpacking boxes.... so i called hoping they were open.... and they were. The person that answered the phone was quite informal with me, but personable.... and took my order quickly ! The driver was at my door in no time.. and i had me yummy delicious pizza... HOT and CRUNCHY ! Will order again.... more

Although their food is your standard greasy NYC style pizza place, the staff is inattentive and rude. After purchasing a pizza I began to play an arcade game next to the register. I handed them my ID as well as my credit card and continued to play. When I went to the counter for my IDs, they said I had picked them up, which , clearly, had not happened. I am now waiting on the police to view the footage because they would not let me see it after the incident. It was negligent and their attitude toward the situation was beyond unhelpful. more

A1 has the best pizza in Newport, it is a great family run restaurant with fresh, homemade style food. LOVE this place! more

It is a shame that you feel this way. I think A-1 pizza has been the same for the over thirty years they have been open. It is run by the same family who are very hospitable and always cater to what each costumer wants. There pizza not only has awards for best chesse pizza many years in a row, their speaciality pizzas are amazing and they are always thinking of new ones to add. There pizza is incomparable to others due to the fact they use cheddar cheese and not mottzerella like many other places. Their grinders are great. They put just enough meant a veggies to make a full sandwhich and not too much to where everything is falling out. They alwasy have new items they are adding and trying out and place on their menu to what their customers like. Any delivery time for a pizza place that is not a chain is probably about 45 minutes on teh island but you can only hire so many drivers plus you have to accountt he time it takes to cook the food. I have been highly satisfied with a-1 my entire life, they are indeed the best family owned resturant around. And their gyros are awesome!!! more

I've lived here on the island over 10 years and I eat out at restaurants every day! I'm single, I live alone and I'm retired. I can tell you 1st hand that A1 Pizza is not what it used to be! Look at the date to this review. It's now June of 2011. If you've lived here recently like I have, were a native to Rhode Island and tend to dine-ou every day like I do - you'd know A1 Pizza is not what it used to be, but is mediocre at best! There's much better pizza now in the area! Don't get me wrong - A1 Pizza is still good. It's good until you've had it delivered to your home a couple of times! When that happens you begin to realize their pizza is undercooked and often soggy. You then call them at times and ask for your pizza to be ""well done"". Then you learn after three or four more deliveries that they don't care whenever you ask for pizza to be well done. They still keep bringing it undercooked! After a dozen or so times of getting soggy pizza and little to no satisfaction when you mention this - you finally start to look around for better pizza. And If you've ordered other items delivered from A1 Pizza you soon notice the quality gets to be sub-par. I've ordered their fried clam strips and fried scallops a number of times and too often they've arrived brown or dark in color, very crunchy and way overcooked - barely edible is more like the truth! I tried them again last night. This time I thought I'd order two sandwiches I never had from them before along with their tradtitional gyro which I've had many times. Along with the gyro I ordered a large Steak & Onion sub along with a Roast Beef Specialty sandwich. My Steak & Onion sub came with hardly any meat inside! Remember the saying ""Where's the Beef?"". When I called and asked about the matter - I asked to speak with the manager. Dave (the manager) said they weigh the steak for each sandwich. He told me I had 8 ounces of steak in my sandwich. I then told him weighing the meat doesn't justify sh_t. Anyone knows pretty much what 8 ounces of shaved steak looks like after it's been fried well and placed in a large sub with nothing else but barely visible onions. It looks like a rip-off and there's no justifying it! Regarding their Roast Beef Specialty sandwich I received? It was so bad I had to throw it out. I checked their menu again just for the heck of it. Their menu states ""freshly-sliced roast beef"". You'd think you'd be getting fresh roast beef, right? It's not. Theirs is freshly-sliced ""deli round"" or in other words chemically-processed roast beef. It tasted almost ""jelly-like"" to me. It was God awful tasting - nothing like fresh at all, nothing like what you'd get when you order a roast beef sandwich at Walt's Roast Beef or Beef Barn and many other restaurants that serve REAL roast beef sandwiches. As to A1 Pizza's traditional gyros? I will not lie - they probably have the best gyros on the entire island! Their traditional gyro is really a very good sandwich! My only complaint is again consistency. Sometimes their traditional gyro is fat with meat, veggies and sauce. What a great sandwich! Other times it's so-so with seemingly half the meat and such. So along with consistency issues and long wait times for delivery of sometimes an hour or more - I've given up on the restaurant altogether. I've vowed never to order from them again! I think Cosa Nostra and Aquidneck Pizzeria has MUCH better pizza than A1 and much better food than A1! A1 Pizza is not what it used to be. more

Growing up just around the corner, A1 Pizza was our local pizza shop until my parents moved us out-of-state. Coming back to Newport to visit Required a stop at A1 Pizza. Not only was the pizza still the best, (after 30yrs), the family owners/operators were pleasant, curious and helpful. My best advice is that there is only one pizza place in Newport... A1 Pizza. A-1's is one of the cleanest establishments I have ever eaten in for starters. The cheese pizza is the best in the state, you'll never find a pizza that compares to this one. The owners & staff are always curtious, always attentative to the customers needs and that Dave is always good for a laugh. Max I got to tell you I think angel1994 is right I think you worked there before and got fired for some reason because anyone in their right mind KNOWS A-1 is the best pizza around and this my friend is just one small girls opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Patronized with these guys for years and thought they'd gotten steadily worse, to the point where we gave up on them. Don't understand why folks rate them high on surveys. The pizzas and subs were poorly prepared, like they're just thrown together; there's no consistency. The sauce was bland with no character, as tho it came straight out of a can or jar. As for hot subs, last time we had 'em the bread was burned; D'Angelo's and Subway are better. Cons: Not good more
